Seb CAVE (ENG) completed a wire-to-wire victory in the 35th St. Andrews Links Trophy after a final day of play on the Old Course.

Cave speaking to the St. Andrews Links Trust Media Team afterwards said “It feels amazing. You can’t really get much bigger than this as an amateur. I’ve never really seemed to crack it round here but I came here with a good mindset and I genuinely believe having my girlfriend on the bag has helped massively and I just stayed chilled.”

Round 4

A 1-under par 71 in the final round was good enough to get Seb CAVE (ENG) over the line at St. Andrews.

Simon HOVDAL (SWE) was one shot behind Cave playing the 18th but a double bogey, having surprisingly pulled his tee shot left and out of bounds, relieved the pressure on the winner and saw the Swede tumble down to 4th place on -3.

Harley SMITH (ENG), who finished with a 68, came 2nd ahead of Calum SCOTT (SCO) 3rd on count back after they both completed the tournament on 283 (-4).

Paul BEAUVY (FRA) was 5th on count back from Hovdal with Lars VAN DER VIGHT (NED) -2 6th. The Dutchman’s 67 this afternoon was the best final round score.

Josh HILL (ENG), Will HOPKINS (ENG) and Cameron ADAM (SCO) all finished on -1 to make the top 10.

With the winds receding as play moved into the early evening the average score in Round 4 from the field was an impressive 72.76 (+0.76).

Round 3

The two overnight leaders did not enjoy their third rounds on a breezy Old Course which made scoring difficult. Seb CAVE (ENG) posted a 75 and Simon HOVDAL (SWE) a 78.

The good news for Cave was that he maintained his 2-shot lead heading into the final round.

Scottish pair Calum SCOTT 69 and Cameron ADAM 71 joined James ASHFIELD (WAL) 73 in tied 2nd place -2, all within striking distance.

Altin VAN DER MERWE (RSA) -2 tied 5th, Paul BEAUVY (FRA) -2 tied 5th and Caolan RAFFERTY (IRL) -1 7th were the only other players under par after 54 holes.

The best third round score came from 2024 French International Amateur champion Benjamin REUTER (NED) who recorded a 4-under 68.

The average score around the Old Course (par 72) on Sunday morning was 74.85 (+2.85) from the 49 remaining competitiors.

Round 2

Play moved across to the Old Course on Saturday with Seb CAVE (ENG) maintaining his lead after recording a 3-under 69.

Simon HOVDAL (SWE) had the best round of the day; his 6-under 66 moved him up to 2nd place just two shots behind our leader.

James ASHFIELD (WAL), Josh HILL (ENG), Will HOPKINS (ENG), Caolan RAFFERTY (IRL), Paul BEAUVY (FRA), Cameron ADAM (SCO) and Andrew DAVIDSON (SCO) all finished the day on 141 (-2) and tied 4th.

English pair Josh Hill and Harley SMITH, who is tied 10th on Even par, both posted 68’s for the joint second best score on Day 2.

49 players made the top 40 and ties 36 hole cut which fell at 147 (+4).

Conor GRAHAM (SCO), who birdied his four of his last five holes, and Dominic CLEMONS (ENG), who birdied the 18th, both shot 1-under 71’s to bounce back well from disappointing opening rounds and make the cut on the +4 mark.

The average score around the Old Course (par 72) from the 144 competitors was 75.24 (+3.24). Conditions were better for the early starters with showers and strong winds coming in during the afternoon.

Round 1

Seb CAVE (ENG) separated himself from the field with an opening round of 66 (-5) on the New Course which included seven birdies.

Max KENNEDY (IRL), Eliot BAKER (ENG), Luis MASAVEU (ESP) and James ASHFIELD (WAL) are all tied for 2nd place after firing 69’s (-2).

Nine players including Andrew DAVIDSON (SCO), Harry CROCKETT (ENG), Hugh FOLEY (IRL) and Cameron ADAM (SCO) are tied 6th on -1.

Looking forward to the 36 hole top 40 and ties cut 37 players finished the day on +1 or better with a further 13 on +2.

The average score around the New Course (par 71) from the 144 competitors was 74.70 (+3.70).

144 golfers will tee off on Friday 7th June in the 35th St. Andrews Links Trophy.

This three day event has become one of the ‘majors’ in men’s amateur golf helped by its venue and timing.

I will be updating this article with daily reports once play gets underway.

Competition Format

The Links Trophy is a 72 hole scratch stroke play competition played annually over the St. Andrews Links in early June.

The field is primarily determined by reference to the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and finished off with various National Golf Union and St. Andrews Links Trust nominations.

This year Round 1 will be played on the New Course and Round 2 on the Old Course. The Jubilee Course is sometimes used for Round 1 but not this year.

The New Course plays 6,681 yards to a par of 71. The front nine is 3,302 yards long with a par of 36 whilst the tougher back nine is slightly longer at 3,379 yards but has a lower par of 35. It has a Course Rating of 73.3 and a Slope of 132.

The Old Course has been set up at 7,171 yards for the event and has a par of 72. Both nines have a par of 36 and have similar yardages – the front is 3,535 yards long whilst the back is longer at 3,636 yards. It has a Course Rating of 75.6 and a Slope of 143.

Following a top 40 and ties cut on Saturday the leading players will play a final 36 holes on the Old Course on Sunday.

The winner will be the player who returns the lowest 72 hole aggregate score.

In the event of a tie a sudden death play-off will be held over holes 1 and 18 on the Old Course.

Ties for all other places will be decided by the lowest score for the last 18 holes or the last 9 or 6 or 3 or 1 hole if necessary.

The Field

As this is the first event that takes place in Great Britain & Ireland after the U.S. college season has ended the field is stronger than we have seen in recent weeks.

26 different countries will be represented in Fife.

Weather Forecast (as at Tuesday 4th June)

The current weather forecast looks just about acceptable with dry mornings and some rain every afternoon. Strong breezes should also make play interesting at times.

Prizes

The winner receives The St Andrews Links Trophy and a commemorative medal.

The runner-up and third place finisher also receive medals.

Reducing voucher prizes are also awarded to the top 10 finishers.

In addition to the main prizes The Ian Forbes Memorial Cup is awarded for the best aggregate score on the first two days of the Championship.

The Open Championship

Introduced in 2023 The Open Amateur Series, which offers an exemption into The Open Championship, is again being offered by The R&A.

The player who gains the most WAGR points in the St. Andrews Links Trophy, the Amateur Championship and the European Amateur Championship will earn a spot at Royal Troon G.C. in July.

2023 St. Andrews Links Trophy

Alex MAGUIRE (IRL) won the St. Andrews Links Trophy by 5-shots with rounds of 70, 66, 66 and 64 and a 266 (-21) total.

The Laytown & Bettystown member became the fourth Irish winner following in the footsteps of Alan Dunbar (2009), Connor O’Rourke (2016) and John Murphy (2018).

Albert HANSSON (SWE) -16 finished 2nd, Calum SCOTT (SCO) -15 3rd, Harry CROCKETT (ENG) -15 4th and Paul BEAUVY (FRA) -12 5th.I

Past Winners

Only Craig WATSON (1992 and 1998), the former GB&I Walker Cup captain, and Barclay HOWARD (1994 and 1996) have won the title twice.

The most famous winner is Justin ROSE who won in 1997.

Interestingly given the normally cosmopolitan nature of the fields the Links Trophy has only been won by players from outside GB&I on four occasions – Australia’s Stuart BOVIER (1990), Daan HUIZING from The Netherlands (2012), Federico ZUCCHETTI from Italy (2015) and Connor MCKINNEY (AUS) from Australia (2022).

Huizing, who had won the 2012 Lytham Trophy by 11 shots just a few weeks earlier, set a scoring record of -23 in 2012 (65 New, 64, 68 and 67 all Old) and won by an astonishing 14 shots.

Scottish Men’s Open Championship – 2024 Preview & Results

Round 4

Dominic CLEMONS (ENG) has won the Scottish Men’s Open Championship with a 260 (-24) total.

He is the 11th English winner and the fourth in the last five playings.

I was impressed with his 65 this morning in the circumstances but clearly Mr. Clemons was not. A bogey free 9-under 62 in the final round this afternoon saw him run off into the distance and ultimately win by an amazing 17 shots.

21 year old – he’s 22 on 14th June – Clemons has just finished his senior fourth year at Stetson University having transferred there from Hutchinson two years ago. He arrived home to Cambridge in good form having finished 87th in the 2024 Clipped Scoreboard Men’s Division I Individual Ranking. Whilst I tipped him to do well in my Preview below I’m sure neither he nor certainly I were expecting a performance of this magnitude.

Talking to Scottish Golf afterwards he said “When it’s your day, it’s your day. When I was out there, I wasn’t thinking about what it means to win around Muirfield, but now it’s sinking in.”

Jordan BURNAND (RSA) -7 finished 2nd on last round count back, Kai KOMULAINEN (AUS) -7 3rd, Jamie NIELSEN (DEN) -6 4th and Matteo CRISTONI (ITA), who had a final round hole-in-one on the 16th, -4 5th.

Jack MCDONALD -1 8th was the highest finishing Scot with Charlie FORSTER (ENG) Ev also finishing in the top 10.

Just eight of the 44 players who made the cut finished under par.

Round 3

Overnight leader Dominic CLEMONS (ENG) showed few nerves in producing a second consecutive 6-under 65 at Muirfield in this morning’s third round.

He now leads the Scottish Men’s Amateur Open Championship by 5-shots going into this afternoon’s final round.

Australian Kai KOMULAINEN, playing in the penultimate three-ball, produced a bogey-free 68 to move into 2nd place on -10.

Clemons’ playing partners Jordan BURNAND (RSA) 71 and Altin VAN DER MERWE (RSA) 72 just about stayed in touch with him, albeit four and five bogeys respectively on their cards were always going to hold them back.

Jamie NIELSEN (DEN) and Matteo CRISTONI (ITA) finished the round on -5 and tied 5th. Cristoni’s 67 was the second best third round score behind the leader.

Round 2

Dominic CLEMONS (ENG) moved into the lead at the Scottish Men’s Open Championship after shooting a 6-under 65 around Muirfield on Day 2.

Jordan BURNAND‘s (RSA) 7-under 64, the best round of the day, lifted him 12 places on the leaderboard into 2nd place. He will start the final day 1-shot behind Clemons.

Kai KOMULAINEN (AUS) and Altin VAN DER MERWE (RSA) -7 are tied 3rd after they both recorded 67’s.

Overnight leader Jamie NIELSEN (DEN) fell back to 5th after his even par 71.

The other big movers towards the top of the leaderboard on Saturday were Maxime LAM (FRA) 66, up 48 spots and now tied 6th on -3, and Rory MCDONALD-O’BRIEN (ENG) 67, up 43 places and now tied 11th on -2.

Jamie NIELSEN (DEN) took the early lead in the Scottish Open Amateur after a seven birdie 65 (-6) around the famous Muirfield links.

David LUNDGREN (SWE), Eli RIEGGER (USA), Charlie FORSTER (ENG), Khaled ATTIEH (SAU), Kai KOMULAINEN (AUS), Dominic CLEMONS (ENG) and Altin VAN DER MERWE (RSA) are all tied 2nd on -3.

On a lovely day for golf in East Lothian 23 players broke par at Muirfield with a further 11 finishing their opening rounds on Even par.

The 57th Scottish Men’s Open Stroke Play Championship starts on Friday 31st May at Muirfield in Gullane, East Lothian.

I will be updating this article throughout the week.

Format

This open scratch amateur competition consists of 72 holes of stroke play.

18 holes will be played on both Friday 31st May and Saturday 1st June.

A 36 hole cut will then take place with only the leading 40 competitors and ties qualifying for the final two rounds which will be played on Sunday 2nd June.

In the event of a tie for the Championship there will be a sudden death play off. All other ties will be resolved via card count back.

Field

144 competitors will start the 2024 Championship.

The field will be made up of (1) the 55 entrants with the highest WAGRs, (2) the next 55 players with the lowest WHS Handicap Index, (3) 10 Scottish Golf nominations and (4) a minimum of 24 players via the Pre-Qualifying event (see below).

The busy amateur schedule means that despite hosting the Championship at Muirfield, one of the best courses in the world, Scottish Golf have again struggled to attract a top class field for its Open Amateur. The NCAA U.S. college season, which only ends on Wednesday 29th May, and the conflicting East of Ireland Men’s Open Amateur and PGA Tour Americas Q-School events have attracted some players. Others are resting with the Scottish Open falling between the Brabazon Trophy and St. Andrews Links Trophy & Amateur Championship in a few weeks time.

The defending champion Connor GRAHAM (SCO), still recovering from a wrist injury, and his brother Gregor GRAHAM, one of GB&I’s best players this year, are both skipping the event.

On paper Cameron ADAM (SCO), Eliot BAKER (ENG), Jordan BURNAND (RSA), Zach CHEGWIDDEN (ENG), Dominic CLEMONS (ENG), Brodie CUNNINGHAM (SCO), Andrew DAVIDSON (SCO), Charlie FORSTER (ENG), Andrew HASWELL (ENG), Jack INGHAM (NED), Jack MCDONALD (SCO), Benjamin REUTER (NED), Matt ROBERTS (WAL), Gregor TAIT (SCO), Altin VAN DER MERWE (RSA) and Matthew WILSON (SCO) seem the most likely to feature highly on the leaderboard.

Pre-Qualifying

Scottish Golf, for the third time, held an 18 hole Pre-Qualifying event. This year it took place on Tuesday 28th May at Gullane No. 2.

Jack DRURY (ENG) and Charlie GILLESPIE (SCO), who both posted 65’s (-6), were the co-medalists leading 36 guaranteed players into the main event. The top 36 cut off fell at -1 with II players on the number. Seven made it through on count back with Ellis WILLOT (ENG) taking the final spot and the four remaining players making up a reserve list.

Muirfield

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (HCEG) was formed in 1744 with Muirfield becoming their home in 1891.

The original links was laid out by Old Tom Morris before Harry Colt redesigned it; his course, now on a larger site, opening for play in 1924. Martin Hawtree undertook further refinements in 2011.

Muirfield has staged the Open Championship (16 times), Amateur Championship (11), Curtis Cup (2), Walker Cup (2), Vagliano Trophy (2) and Ryder Cup (1).

It staged the inaugural Scottish Open Amateur in 1967 when Bernard Gallacher won and then again in 1977 when Paul McKellar (SCO) was victorious.

Unusually for a links course the opening nine holes circle clockwise around the edge of the property before the back nine plays in an anti-clockwise direction on the inside. The fairways are generally flat and visible, and despite their being 148 deep bunkers, the test has always been considered a fair one.

The Championship course plays to 7,245 yards and a par of 71. It has a Course Rating of 73.8 and a Slope Rating of 142.

Prizes

The Winner receives the distinctive silver Championship Trophy and a Crystal Award.

Crystal Awards are also given to the runner-up and third place finisher.

2023 Results

A 16 year old Connor GRAHAM (SCO) won the 2023 Scottish Men’s Open Championship at Meldrum House in Aberdeenshire.

Graham produced four under par rounds for a 265 (-15) total. This included a final round 63 (-7), the low round of the Championship, to storm to a 4-shot victory.

Experienced South African, Altin VAN DER MERWE -11, finished 2nd, Zach CHEGWIDDEN (ENG) -8 was 3rd, Jordan BURNAND (RSA) -7 4th and Max HOPKINS (ENG) -6 5th on count back (last 3 holes) from Connor MCDADE (AUS) -6 who had to settle for 6th.

NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship – 2024 Preview & Results

MATCH PLAY FINAL

AUBURN beat FLORIDA STATE 3-2-0 in the NCAA Div. I Men’s Championship match at Omni La Costa in California.

With both teams playing in the Final for the first time it was Florida State who got off to the better start.

Tyler WEAVER (ENG) secured his third win out of three in Match Play beating Josiah GILBERT (AUS) quite comfortably by 2&1 in Game 2.

The breakout amateur star of 2024 Jackson KOIVUN (USA) made it 1-1 with a 5&4 thrashing of Brett ROBERTS (USA).

Cole ANDERSON (USA) made it 2-1 to the Seminoles, restoring their lead with a 1 Hole win in the opening match against Carson BACHA (USA).

Heading into the two final matches I am sure Florida State’s Head Coach Trey Jones would have been quietly confident with his two best players Frederik KJETTRUP (DEN, WAGR #13) and Luke CLANTON (USA, WAGR #8) still on the course. However, Brendan VALDES (USA, WAGR #23) by 4&3 and John M. BUTLER (USA, WAGR #38) by 2&1 proved too good for his men, the match swinging in favour of Auburn as the day came to a close.

MATCH PLAY SEMI-FINALS (AM)

The Semi-Finals saw the natural order restored with the two higher seeded teams progressing.

FLORDIA STATE (5) beat GEORGIA TECH (8) 3-2-0.

The Seminoles No. 1 player Luke CLANTON (USA) again came good down the stretch. 2Down with 5 holes to play against Christo LAMPRECHT (RSA), returning to the Georgia Tech team having injured his back in the opening stroke play round, he won four consecutive holes to secure an important win.

Super-sub Tyler WEAVER (ENG) finally got the better of Kale FONTENOT (USA) on the 19th hole before Frederik KJETTRUP (DEN) and secured the deciding point with a 3&1 win against the Individual champion Hiroshi TAI (SGP).

Coach Jones brought Gray ALBRIGHT (USA) back into the FSU line-up to replace Brett ROBERTS (USA) but without success as he lost his game with Carson KIM (USA) by 4&2.

AUBURN (6) beat OHIO STATE (7) in the second semi-final also by 3-2-0.

Jackson KOIVUN (USA), who received the Haskins Award before play started, secured the winning point, taking down Adam WALLIN (SWE) on the 21st Hole.

MATCH PLAY QUARTER FINALS (AM)

The opening morning of the Match Play Stage proved to be one full of surprises with the four lower seeded teams all winning their Quarter Finals.

ILLINOIS (1) lost to GEORGIA TECH (8), FLORIDA STATE (5) beat NORTH CAROLINA (4), OHIO STATE (7) overcame VANDERBILT (2) and finally AUBURN (6) got the better of VIRGINIA (3).

The Championship is now wide open.

Florida State’s coach, Trey Jones, substituted in Tyler WEAVER (ENG) to his Quarter Final match play line up to replace Gray ALBRIGHT (USA). The decision proved to be an inspired one as Weaver beat U.S. 2023 Walker Cup player David FORD by 3&2 to win the match for the underdogs.

STROKE PLAY ROUND 4

TEAM

ILLINOIS (-6) earned medalist honours in the NCAA Team Stroke Play Qualifying competition at Omni La Costa.

VANDERBILT (+10) finished 2nd and VIRGINIA (+11) 3rd.

These teams were joined by NORTH CAROLINA (+11), FLORIDA STATE (+12), AUBURN (+19), OHIO STATE (+22) and GEORGIA TECH (+25) in the all-important top 8, thus progressing to the Match Play Stage of the Championship.

INDIVIDUAL

Sophomore Hiroshi TAI (SGP / Georgia Tech) won the Individual NCAA Div. I National Championship with a 72 hole total score of 285 (-3). A triple bogey on his 17th hole, the par 3 8th, in the final round made for a nervy finish but a par on the last proved enough to secure a 1-shot victory.

The win earns Tai an exemption into this year’s U.S. Open Championship and next year’s Masters Tournament.

Tyler GOECKE (USA / Illinois), Luke CLANTON (USA / Florida State), Jackson KOIVUN (USA / Illinois), Gordon SARGENT (USA / Vanderbilt), Max HERENDEEN (USA / Illinois) and Ben JAMES (USA / Virginia) all finished tied 2nd on -2.

Calum SCOTT (SCO / Texas Tech) finished strongly with a 2-under 70 to end the Championship in tied 11th place on Even par. To put this performance in context just 14 players shot par or better over the 72 holes.

STROKE PLAY ROUND 3

TEAM

ILLINOIS (-2) moved to the top of the NCAA Team Stroke Play leaderboard after posting the low team round of the Championship, a 6-under 282 at Omni La Costa.

VIRGINIA (+4) dropped to 2nd place with VANDERBILT (+9) 3rd, FLORIDA STATE (+10) 4th and OHIO STATE (+15) 5th.

EAST TENNESSEE STATE (+27), with two English players in their line up, made the top 15 54-hole team cut on the mark.

INDIVIDUAL

At the end of Round 3 Adam WALLIN (SWE / Ohio State) -5 leads Ben JAMES (USA / Virginia) and Karl VILIPS (AUS / Stanford) -3 in the Individual competition. Wallin and James both shot 3-under 69’s to catch the Australian who could only manage a 76.

Calum SCOTT (SCO / Texas Tech) enjoyed a day to remember, rising 68 places on the Individual leaderboard. His 4-under 68 included a hole-in-one on the 245 yard 12th as well as six other birdies. Whilst his TEXAS TECH team missed out he progressed as the 5th best individual not on one of those teams – the top 9 advance.

VIRGINIA (+1) enjoyed another excellent day at Omni La Costa to maintain their lead in the NCAA Team Stroke Play competition.

The pre-tournament favourites are gathering behind them with ILLINOIS (+4) 2nd, VANDERBILT (+7) 3rd, AUBURN (+10) 4th and NORTH CAROLINA (+11) 5th.

From a home interest perspective EAST TENNESSEE STATE (+17) tied 9th and STANFORD (+22) 15th remain the right side of the 54 hole cut line.

INDIVIDUAL

Karl VILIPS (AUS / Stanford) recorded a second round 68 to move on to -7 and into a 5-shot lead.

George DUANGMANEE (USA / Virginia) and Adam WALIN (SWE / Ohio State) -2 are tied 2nd and Max HARENDEEN (USA / Illinois), Jase SUMMY (USA / Oklahoma) & Jackson KUIVON (USA / Auburn) -1 all tied 4th.

Barclay BROWN (ENG / Stanford), tied 40th on +5, remains the best placed of the five remaining GB&I players. Sam EASTERBOOK (ENG) was dropped from the Purdue line up on Saturday.

EAST TENNESSEE STATE (+8), led by their English coach Jake Amos, are tied 9th.

The initial aim for all of the teams is to make the top 15 after 54 holes when a cut will take place before the final stroke play round.

The 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s National Golf Championship will be played at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California on 24th-29th May 2024.

This is the first of three NCAA National Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships that will be staged at La Costa. In 2024 they are being hosted by the University of Texas.

A former long time PGA Tour stop off the North Course has recently been re-designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner and the two NCAA Golf Championships in May are marking its official re-opening.

The men’s course will play 7,538 yards with a par of 72.

30 5-man teams and 6 individuals not on those teams qualified to play through six Regional events played on 13th-15th May. To learn more about these Regionals please read my earlier article – NCAA Division I Men’s Regionals – 2024 Preview & Results

At the National Championship 54 holes of stroke play will be played on 24th-26th May. A cut will then take place which will see the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on those teams play a final 18 holes on 27th May. Team scores in the stroke play stage are based on a best four from five players cumulative total. After 72 holes an Individual champion is crowned with the leading 8 teams progressing to a match play stage. Seeded match play will then take place on 28th-29th May to determine the Team national champions.

Brabazon Trophy – 2024 Preview & Results

Gregor GRAHAM (SCO) continued his excellent form in 2024 by collecting the prestigious Brabazon Trophy at Hollinwell G.C.

The Blairgowrie man joins Ronnie Shade (1961, ’63, ’67), Sandy Lyle (1975, ’77), Gordon Brand Jr (1978) and Lloyd Saltman (2005) as Scottish winners of the Brabazon.

Talking to England Golf afterwards Graham said “It feels absolutely amazing. It’s great to win such a big event like this. When I knew it was going to be 12 holes on the final day, it felt a bit different and strange but it was a bit of a shootout so I just tried to make as many birdies as possible.”

Round 3

With a high probability of thunder and lightening during the day England Golf took the early decision to cancel Round 4 and to play Round 3 over 12 holes. The reduction to 12 holes being made due to the Rules of Golf not permitting the number of holes in a round to be reduced once it has commenced.

Holes 1-8, 15, 16, 17 and 18 at Hollinwell (with a par of 50) were used to ensure that a speedy course evacuation could take place if required.

Gregor GRAHAM (SCO), who started the day 4-shots back and in tied 4th, came through the field to lift the famous gold trophy with a 3-under 47.

Daniel HAYES (ENG) finished 2nd on -8. Like the winner, who had finished in the group ahead of him, he bogeyed the 460 yard closing hole to miss out on a possible play-off.

Wilhelm RYDING (SWE) was 3rd on -8. His 49 (-1) included an eagle on the 17th but the birdie he then needed on 18 alluded him.

The biggest move of the day came from Wilmer EDERO (SWE) who posted a 45 (-5), which included four closing birdies, to finish 4th on -7.

Eliot BAKER (ENG) finished strongly with a 47 to claim 5th place also on -7.

Overnight leader Harry TAKIS (AUS) had a day to forget shooting a 59 (+9) and tumbling down to a 28th place finish. Playing partner Harley SMITH (ENG) didn’t fair much better; his 53 (+3) on the final day seeing him fall to 9th place.

There was some consolation for runner-up Daniel HAYES (ENG) in that he won The George Henriques Salver, awarded to the leading GB&I player in the Championship under the age of 20.

Round 2

Harry TAKIS (AUS) backed up yesterday’s 65 with a 69 today to maintain his position at the head of affairs. After going out in a 1-over 37 he birdied four of his last six holes including the two closing ones.

Harley SMITH (ENG) shot a 68, which included eagles on the 3rd and 17th holes, to move into solo 2nd place on -9.

Wilhelm RYDING (SWE) followed his opening 68 with a 69 to move up into 3rd on -7.

Daniel HAYES (ENG) and Gregor GRAHAM (SCO) will head into the final day tied 4th on -4.

Matt ROBERTS (WAL), now tied 8th, bounced back superbly from an opening round 75 with a joint best of the week 65 which included an eagle and six birdies.

Also noteworthy was Gregor TAIT‘s (SCO) bogey free 66 to make the cut. No mean achievement after he started the day on +5 and just the kind of round selectors like to see.

Round 1

It may have been 24 hours later than originally scheduled but Round 1 didn’t disappoint with a number of players going low at Hollinwell.

18 year old Harry TAKIS (AUS), ranked 606th in the WAGR, took the early lead with a bogey free 65 (-7).

Gregor GRAHAM (SCO) also shot seven birdies on Day 1 but a bogey on the short par 4 11th meant he had to settle for 2nd place on -6.

Olly ALLISON (ENG), a Midland qualifier, Daniel BENNETT (RSA), Harley SMITH (ENG) and Monty HOLCOMBE (ENG) are all tied 3rd after signing for 67’s.

At the end of the day 38 players were under par and a further 10 finished on even par.

The 78^thEnglish Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the Brabazon Trophy will be played at Hollinwell, the home of Notts Golf Club, between Friday 24th and Sunday 26th May 2024.

I will be updating this article with daily reports once play commences.

Format

The competition traditionally consists of 72 holes of stroke play golf with 18 holes being played over four days. A 36 hole cut reduces the field to the leading 60 competitors and ties for the final two rounds.

However, due to heavy rain on Wednesday 22nd May, which forced the official practice day to be abandoned, the format this year has been changed. The practice round will now be played on Thursday 23rd, Round 1 on Friday 24th and Round 2 on Saturday 25th. A revised cut, taking in only the leading 36 players and ties, will then be made before the final two rounds are played on Sunday 26th.

In the event of a tie for the Championship there will be a sudden death play off.

All other places will be determined by a card count-back, starting with the final round and working backwards from there.

Tee Times

Play on the opening two days will commence at 7.00am with the final three-ball heading out at 3.30pm.

144 competitors from 16 different countries will contest the 2024 Brabazon Trophy Championship.

The majority of this number were exempt with starting places offered to a number of national golf federations and to those players who have performed well in other recent Championships.

Amongst the 87 exempt players and most highly ranked players are James ASHFIELD (WAL / WAGR #48), Daniel BENNETT (RSA / #262), Tomi BOWEN (WAL / #205), James CLARIDGE (ENG / #199), Nicola GERHARDSEN (SUI / #236), Gregor GRAHAM (SCO / #228), Conor GOUGH (ENG / #319), Matthew MCCLEAN (IRL / #76), defending champion Liam NOLAN (IRL / #109), Benjamin REUTER (NED / #169) and Altin VAN DER MERWE (RSA / #148).

Will HOPKINS (ENG / #101) was a late withdrawal with a minor shoulder injury.

The Championship clashes with the NCAA Division I National Championship in California which means a number of leading GB&I and European players are otherwise engaged with their U.S. colleges.

Just eight of England’s top 20 WAGR-ranked players are competing in their country’s leading amateur event.

Three 18 hole regional Qualifying Tournaments were staged on 14th May 2024. 16 players automatically qualified from each of the Midland, Northern and Southern Qualifiers. 9 more subsequently made the final start sheet after being called up from the Alternates / Reserves list.

Ties for the last qualifying place at each venue were determined by card countback.

Prize vouchers will be awarded to those players finishing in the top five.

Two other prizes are connected to the Brabazon Trophy competition: –

The George Henriques Salver is awarded to the leading GB&I player in the Championship under the age of 20.

The Philip Scrutton Jug is awarded to the player returning the best aggregate scores in The Brabazon Trophy and The Berkshire Trophy. The latter was played on 18-19 May and won by Freddie Turnell (ENG), who failed to qualify from the Southern Qualifier at Marlborough (he finished tied 29th).

Hollinwell

Hollinwell, the home of the Notts Golf Club, was formed in 1887 and moved to it’s current site in Kirkby in Ashfield in 1901 inviting twice Open champion Willie Park Jnr to lay out an original 18 hole course.

Tom Williamson and JH Taylor developed the course further in the early 20th Century.

The course is in an outstanding location, mixing heathland, moorland and woodland features. The 11th-13th holes played on the higher ground are particularly memorable. The holy well, which gives the course its name, is located near the 8th tee.

The blue championship course plays to 7,250 yards and a par of 72. It has a Course Rating of 76.2 and Slope of 145.

Hollinwell has hosted numerous amateur and professional Championships over the years and between 2018-2022 was a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship.

This will be a record sixth time that it has hosted the Brabazon Trophy. Past winners here include Doug Sewell (1959), Sandy Lyle (1975), Charlie Banks (1983), Ignacio Garrido (1992) and Cormac Sharvin (2015).

2023 Brabazon Trophy

Liam NOLAN (IRL), then 23 years old, won the 2023 Brabazon Trophy on Sunningdale’s New Course after over coming Zach LITTLE (ENG) in a sudden death play-off which lasted three holes.

Both players completed the regulation 72 holes in 277 (-3).

Zach LITTLE (ENG) had the consolation of winning the George Henriques Salver awarded to the highest finishing U20 GB&I player.

History, Past Winners and Records

The English Amateur International Trophy competition was first played in 1947.

In 1957 the official title was changed to the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

The current trophy was donated by Lord Brabazon of Tara in 1948 and the event has come to be widely known as the Brabazon Trophy.

The first player to successfully defend the title was Ronnie WHITE who won at Birkdale in 1950 and nearby Formby in 1951.

Shortly afterwards Philip SCRUTTON won the Brabazon three times in four years (1952, ‘54 & ‘55).

Sir Michael BONALLACK has four wins to his name. The first came at Royal Cinque Ports in 1964 and the last at Hillside in 1971. At Moortown in 1969, with play-offs having been discarded at this time, he shared the title with Rodney FOSTER.

Other well known British winners of the Brabazon include Gordon BRAND Jnr, Sandy LYLE (2), Peter MCEVOY, Ronan RAFFERTY and Ronnie SHADE (3).

Other notable winners include well known pros Ignacio GARRIDO (1992), Peter HANSON (1998) and Charl SCHWARTZEL (2002).

STANFORD (#1) beat UCLA (#6) by 3-2-0 in the Final of the NCAA Div. I Women’s National Championship at Omni La Costa Golf Resort & Spa in California.

The Cardinals, led by their Scottish head coach Anne Walker, won their third Championship in the match play era and second in three years.

Senior Rachel Heck who has battled injuries in recent years secured the winning point in the final game. Kelly Xu and Megha Ganne were the other point winners.

MATCH PLAY QUARTER FINALS (AM)

LSU (#2) were beaten 3-2-0 by OREGON (#7) with Aine DONEGAN (IRL) losing by 1 Hole to Kiara Romero in Game 5.

UCLA (#6) were the second lower seed to surprise a more highly ranked team. TEXAS A&M (#3) going down 3-0-0.

STANFORD (#1) bucked the early trend easily beating AUBURN (#8) 3-0-0. Rachel Heck beat Anna FOSTER (IRL) in Game 2.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (#4) beat CLEMSON (#5) by 3-1-0 to earn a semi-final showdown with their state neighbours Stanford.

STROKE PLAY ROUND 4

TEAM

STANFORD and LSU (+2) were co-medalists in the Stroke Play Qualifying competition in the Women’s National Championship at Omni La Costa in California. Stanford secured the No. 1 seeding, for the fourth consecutive year, based on their non-counting player’s cumulative score over the 72 holes. Stanford had two players in the top 10 and all five of their line up in the top 45 of the Individual leaderboard.

Stanford’s Scottish-born coach Anne Walker said afterwards “When I look back over the last decade and the last four years, we have been fortunate to have some of the world’s best players. When you put those players on a stage like this, they love it and usually show up. I feel lucky as a coach to have that experience year after year with these players at Stanford.”

The leading eight teams progressed to the Match Play Stage of the competition with TEXAS A&M, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, CLEMSON, UCLA, OREGON and AUBURN making up the numbers.

This means from a GB&I perspective that Aine Donegon (LSU) and Anna Foster (Auburn) are our only remaining players.

INDIVIDUAL

Adela CERNOUSEK (FRA / Texas A&M) -12 won the Individual title. Surprisingly she ended her third year in Texas with her first collegiate win.

The Antibes native said afterwards “It hasn’t really sunk in. This is a crazy feeling, and I am so proud to be the first individual national champion for Texas A&M. I had a couple of opportunities to win in the fall, but I wasn’t able to finish it off. It means a lot for my first collegiate win to be here.”

The victory secures an exemption into the DANA Open on the LPGA Tour.

Lottie WOAD (ENG / Florida State) -9 enjoyed the best round of the day to secure 2nd place.

Stanford’s Paula MARTIN SAMPEDRO (Spain) -6 finished strongly to take 3rd place.

Aine DONEGAN (IRL / LSU) -5 was one of two players to finish tied 4th.

Mimi RHODES (ENG / Wake Forest) Ev shot a 70 in the final round to also make the top 10.

TEAM

TEXAS A&M (-10) hold the 54-hole lead in the Women’s National Championship at Omni La Costa in California, one shot ahead of STANFORD (-9).

The top 15 teams shown below qualified for the final stroke play round. The leading eight teams after tomorrow’s final round will then progress to the Match Play Stage of the competition.

From a GB&I player perspective LSU (-1) 3rd, AUBURN (+12) tied 7th, WAKE FOREST (+20) 12th and FLORIDA STATE (+25) 15th all earned an extra day’s play. Lottie WOAD (ENG) birdied the 18 hole to lift Florida State out of a potential play-off for the final 54-hole qualifying spot with ARIZONA STATE (+26).

CLEMSON lead the National Championships with a 280 (-8) opening round at Omni La Costa in California.

By way of reminder the initial aim for all of the teams is to make the top 15 after 54 holes when a cut will take place before the final stroke play round.

INDIVIDUAL

Lottie WOAD (ENG / Florida State) 65 (-7) leads the Individual standings at the end of Day 1 from Isabella RAWL (USA / Clemson) -6.

Lottie was 1-shot away from tieing the lowest round in Nationals history, a 64, which came from Megan McChrystal (LSU) in 2010.

Speaking to the Florida State media team after her round the Farnham star said “I drove the ball well and left myself in pretty much every fairway. I’m feeling really good.”

The 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s National Golf Championship will be played at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California on 17th-22nd May 2024.

This is the first of three NCAA National Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships that will be staged at La Costa. In 2024 they are being hosted by the University of Texas.

A former long time PGA Tour stop off the North Course has recently been re-designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner and the Women’s Championship will mark its official re-opening.

The women’s course will play 6,297 yards with a par of 72.

30 5-woman teams and 6 individuals not on those teams qualified to play through six Regional events played on 6th-8th May. To learn more about these Regionals please read my earlier article – NCAA Division I Women’s Regionals – 2024 Preview & Results

At the National Championship 54 holes of stroke play will be played on 17th-19th May. A cut will then take place which will see the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on those teams play a final 18 holes on 20th May. Team scores in the stroke play stage are based on a best four from five players cumulative total. After 72 holes an Individual champion is crowned with the leading 8 teams progressing to a match play stage. Seeded match play will then take place on 21st-22nd May to determine the Team national champions.

2023 Results

WAKE FOREST, whose team included Mimi Rhodes (ENG) and Lauren Walsh (IRL), won the 2023 NCAA Division I National Championship at Greyhawk G.C. in Arizona. It was Wake’s first women’s national title in the program’s history.

WAKE FOREST (seeded 3rd) beat SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (USC) (seeded 5th) 3-1-0 in the 18 hole Team Final.

Rose ZHANG (USA / Stanford) became the first player in competition history to win the NCAA Division 1 Women’s National Championship on multiple occasions and in successive years.

Her 278 (-10) total was one shot better than Lucia LOPEZ-ORTEGA (Spain / San Jose State) and Catherine PARK (USA / Southern California).

Lauren WALSH (IRL) and Charlotte HEATH (ENG) who finished tied 7th on -6 were the best of the GB&I contingent.

France beat England 13.5.-10.5 in the 37th Men’s International Match played this year at Moortown G.C.

This was France’s sixth win in the biennial series and their first since 2010 at Chantilly.

Morning Foursomes

England and France again halved the Foursomes series 2.0-2.0.

Hugo LE GOFF & Noa AUCH-ROY were again in superb form as they blew away England’s star pairing of Dylan SHAW-RADFORD & Harley SMITH with a 3&2 win in the opening game.

Will HOPKINS & Zach CHEGWIDDEN secured England’s first point of Day 2 with a strong foursomes performance against Darren STRACHAN & Rafael BOBO-LLORET; hole wins on the 14th and 15th pushed the English pairing on to a 3&1 win.

Ben BOLTON & Ben BROWN came out on the wrong side of an exciting match against Oscar COUILLEAU & LOUKA MORIN, with plenty of birdies from both sides, by 1 Hole.

Eliot BAKER & James CLARIDGE beat Callixte ALZAS & Aaron VAN HAUWE by 2&1 to earn their first wins of the match.

Afternoon Singles

France won the Day 2 Singles series 4.5-3.5 to complete a thoroughly deserved match win.

Hugo LE GOFF and Will HOPKINS again played each other in the top match. This time it was the turn of the Frenchman to earn the 1 Hole victory in another high class encounter.

Harley SMITH continued his good form with a comfortable 4&3 victory over Noa AUCH-ROY helped by a match play eagle and five birdies in the 15 holes they played.

Yorkshire’s Dylan SHAW-RADFORD wasn’t to be out done by his foursomes partner. Five birdies in his 14 holes enabled him to runaway from Louka MORIN by 5&4 in Game 3.

Rafael BOBO-LLORET easily saw off Ben BOLTON 6&5 after the Englishman got on the bogey train on the 6th hole and was unable to get off it.

Zach CHEGWIDDEN, who was 4Down after 11 holes after a sloppy front nine to Darren STRACHAN, fought back to 1Down by the 15th but a three putt bogey on 16 gave the Frenchman the breathing space he needed to secure a 2&1 win.

Ben BROWN got the better of Callixte ALZAS in a rollercoaster match where the home player took an early lead, let it slip around the turn, before finishing strongly, a long putt from off the green for birdie on the 18th being key, for a 1Hole win.

Aaron VAN HAUWE beat Devon’s Eliot BAKER by 2&1 in the penultimate Singles, the highlight being his eagle on the 519 yard 7th.

James CLARIDGE, who was behind for most of his match against Oscar COUILLEAU, showed good heart in winning the closing two holes to tie his game, albeit the Frenchman bogeyed both of them.

Morning Foursomes

England and France halved the Day 1 Foursomes series 2.0-2.0.

In Game 1 Hugo LE GOFF & Noa AUCH-ROY were a match play 6-under par for the 15 holes they required to beat Will HOPKINS & Zach CHEGWIDDEN by 5&3.

Game 2 saw the victorious 2024 Sunningdale Foursomes pairing of Dylan SHAW-RADFORD & Harley SMITH overcome Oscar COUILLEAU & Darren STRACHAN, who had 5 bogeys in the 14 holes they played, by 5&4.

Ben BROWN & Ben BOLTON beat Rafael BOBO-LLORET & LOUKA MORIN by 2&1, the French pair unable to recover from losing the 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th holes, three of them to bogeys.

In the final game Callixte ALZAS & Aaron VAN HAUWE beat Eliot BAKER & James CLARIDGE by 3&1. The French pair were 3Up at the turn and saw out the match relatively comfortably thereafter.

Afternoon Singles

France won the Day 1 Singles series 5.0-3.0.

Will HOPKINS, who won the Lytham Trophy last weekend, got the better of Hugo LE GOFF in the opening Singles. 2Down with four holes to plan Hopkins delivered two birdies, including one on the home hole with a 25 foot putt, to secure a memorable 1 Hole victory.

The second game was equally tight with Noa AUCH-ROY getting the better of Zach CHEGWIDDEN by 1 Hole.

Harley SMITH and Dylan SHAW-RADFORD both maintained their unbeaten match records with 5&4 and 2&1 wins against Darren STRACHAN and Rafael BOBO-LLORET respectively.

Ben BROWN and James CLARIDGE both got off to good starts in their games, Brown leading 2Up after 4 holes and Claridge 3Up after 5, but both were reeled in by Louka MORIN and Callixte ALZAS as they leaked bogeys as their rounds progressed.

Aaron VAN HAUWE outlasted Ben BOLTON in a competitive match which was All Square after 16 holes before the Enville player handed the initiative to the Frenchman with two badly timed bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes.

The biggest Singles win of Day 1 went to Oscar COUILLEAU who beat Eliot BAKER by 6&5. Couilleau was a match play 5-under par for the 13 holes he required to reach the winning line.

England will play France this coming weekend in the 37th Men’s International Match between the two countries.

The last match, played at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche near Paris in May 2022, was won by England.

Format

8 man teams from each country will play 4 foursomes and 8 single matches on both Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May.

With a total of 24 points to play for the winning team needs to secure 12.5 points to win the match outright. As England won the 2022 match they will also retain the trophy in the event of a 12-12 tie. Having said that there has never previously been a tie in the history of the contest.

The biennial match is normally played on an alternate home and away basis.

The biennial playing of this fixture in mid-May hampers selection nowadays as both teams have an increasing number of potential players competing on the U.S. college circuit.

Venue

Moortown Golf Club was designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie in 1909 across woodland and moorland on the northern outskirts of Leeds.

The club has long held a reputation as a venue for prestigious international championships and was the host of the first Ryder Cup match on British soil in 1929.

Off the Blue Championship Tees the courses measures 7,001 yards and plays to a par of 71.

The Gibraltar par 3 10th, shown below, is the Club’s signature hole.

This International Match was first played in 1934, originally starting with 6 players per side before moving to 8 in 1949.

It lapsed after the 1962 match at Ganton Golf Club but was resurrected in 1982 at Chantilly with a new format which has been retained to this day.

Frilford Heath Golf Club, hosts of the 1984 match, donated a silver salver which the winning team retains.

To date England have won 31 of the matches with France winning just 5, the last one being in 2010 at Chantilly.

2022 International Match

England beat France 13.5-10.5 in the 2022 Men’s International Match at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, finally overcoming their stubborn opponents in the final Singles session.

French pair Julien Sale and Oihan Guillamoundeguy were the star performers in the match delivering the two only unbeaten records.

John Gough, Arron Edwards-Hill, Jack Bigham and Sam Bairstow crucially won both of their Singles for the English.

Irish Amateur Open Championship – 2024 Preview & Results

Round 4

Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) won the Flogas Irish Amateur Open Championship at County Sligo G.C.

The famous Rosses Point links were bathed in sunshine all week and the cream certainly came to the top.

McClean’s 2-under par 69 in the final round was ultimately good enough for a 273 (-11) total and a 2-shot victory over Liam NOLAN (IRL). After bogeying the 10th he managed two birdies on 12 and 15 to produce a nerveless finish.

Speaking afterwards the champion from Malone G.C. said “It’s my first Irish Championship, I came close quite a few times, too many too think about, specifically two years ago when I lost in a play-off. I always felt like I was still chasing which is the easier position. I only had to hold on coming down the last which was the first time I was ahead and I managed to get that par in at the last.”

Heading into the final round with a 4-shot lead Nolan got off to a nightmare start dropping three shots in his opening three holes. Whilst he fought back well to still be in contention late on two finishing bogeys, where both of his approaches ran through the green, allowed McClean to see out the Championship with some ease. Perhaps Nolan’s lack of competitive play in 2024 finally caught up with him but nevertheless this was still an encouraging performance for him to move forward from.

TJ FORD (IRL) produced a superb 65, which included an eagle and four birdies, to finish in 3rd place on -6.

Oswestry’s Tom MATTHEWS (WAL) -5 will travel back across the Irish Sea pleased with his 4th place finish.

Hugh FOLEY (IRL) also finished strongly; his final round 66 lifting him up to 5th place.

Matthew WILSON (SCO), Joe O’NEILL (IRL) and Gavin TIERNAN (IRL) all finished tied 6th on -3.

They were the only 8 players to finish under par with eight more completing the Championship on Even par.

Round 3

Liam NOLAN (IRL) shot his second 66 of the Championship on Saturday, the low round of the day, to build a 4-shot lead at the top of the scoreboard.

After a double bogey on the 1st the Galway man produced a stunning 10 birdies, including three consecutively to close, over his remaining holes.

Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) -9 is 2nd but his 1-under 70, normally a very acceptable score at County Sligo, was made to look a little pedestrian by the scoring of his Walker Cup teammate and playing partner today.

Gavin TIERNAN (IRL) -6 and Tom MATTHEWS (WAL) -4 matched McClean’s 70 and are 3rd and 4th respectively. Joe O’NEILL‘s (IRL) 74 on Day 3 saw him slip to 5th.

Daniel BENNETT (RSA) and Seán KEELING (IRL) -2 both moved up 11 places with well timed 68’s. They sit alongside David TOMI (CZK) 70, Matthew WILSON (SCO) 71 and Keith EGAN (IRL) 71 with 18 holes to play.

52 players made the top 50 and ties cut which fell at 221 (+8).

After another beautiful day for golf at County Sligo Joe O’NEILL (IRL) -6 is 3rd, Gavin TIERNAN (IRL) -5 4th and TJ FORD (IRL) & Tom MATTHEWS (WAL) -3 tied 5th.

Luke KELLY (IRL), Gregor TAIT (SCO), Welsh Amateur champion Max WEAVER, Matthew WILSON (SCO) and Shane MCDERMOTT (IRL) all remain in contention on -2.

Round of the day went to Wilson who posted a 67 (-4) to move up 34 places on the leaderboard.

Round 1

18 year old Gavin TIERNAN (IRL), who will be taking up a golf scholarship at East Tennessee State in August, took the Day 1 lead at the Flogas Irish Amateur Open Championship after shooting a 6-under 65 around County Sligo G.C.

Paired together Liam NOLAN (IRL), playing his first competitive round of the year, and fellow GB&I 2023 Walker Cupper Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) also started strongly with 66’s (-5).

Joe O’NEILL (IRL) -4 is 4th with 2016 & 2022 champion Colm CAMPBELL (IRL), TJ FORD (IRL) and Ruairi O’CONNOR (IRL) one shot further back in tied 5th.

Scottish internationals Gregor GRAHAM and Gregor TAIT (-2) are well placed amongst the tied 8th six man group.

With Sligo bathed in sunshine and with only a modest breeze blowing 22 players broke par around the normally challenging links.

The Irish Men’s Amateur Open Championship, sponsored by Flogas, starts on Thursday 9th May 2024 at County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point in the north-west corner of Ireland.

It will be the 85th playing of this prestigious Championship. It was last played at County Sligo in 2019 when Englishman James Newton was the surprise winner.

I will be updating this article in due course with daily reports on play.

Format

Organised by Golf Ireland the Irish Amateur Open is a 72-hole stroke play event played over four days.

18 holes will be played on each of the first three days before a top 50 and ties cut is made. A final 18 holes will then be played by the leading competitors on the final day.

A tie for the Championship will be resolved by a sudden death play-off. All other ties will be resolved by a last eighteen and then last nine countback.

The Irish Amateur Open Champion Golfer is awarded a superb silver trophy (see photo below). Irish winners are allowed to take the trophy back to their Club for the year whereas overseas winners must return it to the organisers after the prize presentation.

Players

138 golfers will contest the 2024 Championship.

105 players are from Ireland with 33 travelling from overseas to compete.

The field quality has been impacted by the large number of players now playing on the U.S. college circuit, the England v. France International match which is being played this weekend and the relatively remote location of County Sligo.

Egan beat David BRADY (IRL) in the final of this year’s West of Ireland Amateur Open Championship at County Sligo on 2nd April.

Players will tee off, all from the 1st tee, between 7.00am and 3.25pm on each of the first three days so changes in the weather and wind speeds could play a big part in scoring.

Course

County Sligo G.C. was established in 1894 with the first nine holes designed by George Combe before Willie Campbell added a further nine a few years later. Harry Colt and Charles Allison remodelled the links in 1927 and more recently Pat Ruddy extended it to ensure it remained of Championship standard.

Famous as the home of the West of Ireland Amateur Open Championship it offers panoramic views, dramatic undulations, dunes and burns, plateau greens with run offs and challenging bunkering.

The course plays to 7,139 yards off the Blue Championship tees. It has a par of 71, a Slope of 146 and Rating of 75.9.

The 2023 Irish Amateur Open Championship

John GOUGH (ENG) won the 2023 Irish Amateur Open Championship at The Island G.C. with a 280 (-8) total.

Rounds of 75, 69, 69 and, after starting the final round six shots back, 67 saw him move through the field to take the title.

Dylan SHAW-RADFORD (ENG) -7 finished 2nd, Tomi BOWEN (WAL) -6, which included a 10-under 62 in Round 3, 3rd, Alex MAGUIRE (IRL) -5 4th, Matt ROBERTS (WAL) -4 5th and James CLARIDGE (ENG) -3 6th.

History, Past Winners and Records

The Irish Amateur Open Championship was first played in 1892 with early winners including the English amateur greats John Ball and Harold Hilton.

Between 1894 and 1901 (6 years) the competition was played as part of the Irish Championship Meeting alongside a professional tournament.

The Championship was not played during both World Wars.

It was also not played between 1960 and 1994 due to a lack of interest from overseas players amidst concerns over safety.

Prior to 1958 it was a match play event but since returning to the amateur calendar in 1995 it has been 72 holes of stroke play.

NCAA Division I Men’s Regionals – 2024 Preview & Results

Here is a summary of the results from the six 54-hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships which were played on 13th-15th May 2024.

The low five teams (30 in total) and the low individual (6 in total) not on one of those teams from each Regional advanced to the National Championships.

East Tennessee State, coached by England’s Jake Amos, continued their fine form with a strong qualification but were just piped to the Championship by surprise package Clemson. Thomas Higgins and Matt Dodd-Berry impressed for their teams but the GB&I star of the show was undoubtedly Charlie Forster who finished 4th. Sadly he missed out on progressing as an Individual by 1-shot to Nick Matthews. Forster’s Long Beach team finished 7th on -13, 2-shots short of Baylor in 5th.

The Rancho Sante Fe course played tough with scoring high. West Virginia, who finished 3rd, progressed to the Nationals for the first time in 47 years. However, the real upset here was that Pac-12 champions and top seeds Arizona State could only manage a 6th place finish so missed out. There was no joy for the small number of GB&I players at this site.

Playing as an Individual Enrique Dimayuga continued his excellent Spring Season form with a T14 finish at Stanford. Charlie Crockett also played better than his score falling down the leaderboard after a disappointing finish to his final round. Stanford narrowly avoided the embarrassment of missing out on their home course thus affording both Michael Thorbjornsen and Barclay Brown a proper send off at the Nationals.

Vanderbilt demonstrated their class with a 13-shot win at West Lafayette. Purdue, with Sam Easterbrook in their line up, finished 2nd to join them in the forthcoming Nationals at Carlsbad.

Regional Championships

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 13th-15th May 2024.

81 teams and 45 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 1st May 2024 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 30 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2024 Regionals. The remaining teams progressed based on their performances throughout the season.

13 teams and 10 individuals were allocated to three of the Regional venues with the remaining sites hosting 14 teams and 5 individuals. As always the draw has been made in such a way that all of the fields are of a similar strength.

Teams of five players play 72 holes of stroke play with their best four scores counting towards their team’s total score. Players, who play in each round, are also eligible for a separate Individual competition.

National Championships

5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California on 24th-29th May 2024.

The National Championships start with 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams and 9 individuals, not on an advancing team, then progress to a final 18 holes of stroke play. After these 72 holes have been played an Individual champion is determined and the top 8 teams advance to a match play stage to establish the Team champions.

Florida is the defending champion after they defeated Georgia Tech 3-1 in the 2023 Championship Final, played at Greyhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Arizona. Florida’s Fred BIONDI (BRA) won the Individual title with a 273 (-7) total.

Details of the six Regional Championships are shown below with each team listed in seed order and, if they earned automatic qualification, the Conference Championship they recently won to do so.

GB&I players attached to the qualifying colleges are highlighted in bold blue type. Each team is now allowed to take a Reserve to the event so it is possible some may not play or be subbed in and out during the week.

27 GB&I players will start the Regional Championships with a further 4 on the bench waiting to be called upon.
