The St. Andrews Links Trophy – 2025 Preview & Results

Play-Off

Cameron ADAM (SCO) won the 2025 St. Andrews Links Trophy after a sudden death play-off with John DOYLE (IRL).

Adam won on the first play-off hole – the 1st on the Old Course – with a two putt par 4 after the young Irishman three putt bogeyed the hole.

The man from The Royal Burgess Golfing Society in Edinburgh also won The Ian Forbes Memorial Cup which is awarded for the best aggregate score on the first two days of the tournament. He shot a 68 on the Jubilee Course in Round 1 and a 64 on the Old Course. in Round 2 for a 132 (-12) total.

Round 4

Cameron ADAM (SCO) and John DOYLE (IRL) both finished the 72 hole tournament on 271 (-17).

17 year old Doyle completed rounds of 66 (-6) and 65 (-7) to come from outside the top 20 on the final day. Doyle teed off 1 hour and 44 minutes ahead of Adam this afternoon. Despite winning both the Irish Boys’ and Munster Men’s Amateur Open Championships this season Doyle was only ranked 1,524th coming into the event.

Having posted the low round this morning Doyle went one better this afternoon with a 65 which included 10 birdies. This was the joint low round this afternoon with France’s Gaspar GLAUDAS matching his effort.

The far more experienced Adam (WAGR #73), who had to play catch up all afternoon, showed great poise to play a bogey free final round of 68 and secure the birdie he needed on the 72nd hole to force the play-off.

Mark STOCKDALE (ENG) -14 finished 3rd, Harley SMITH (ENG) -12 4th, Niall SHIELS DONEGAN (SCO) -12 5th, Christiaan MAAS (RSA) -11 6th, Ugo MALCOR (FRA) -11 7th and Thomas HIGGINS -11 8th.

The average Round 4 score was 71.41 (-0.59). 37 players shot par or better on Sunday afternoon.

Round 3

Thomas HIGGINS (IRL) moved into the lead on -14 after a 5-under 67 in this morning’s third round.

Cameron ADAM (SCO) fell into 2nd place with an up and down 71 which included an eagle, three birdies and four bogeys. This was 2 shots better than his playing partner Niall SHIELS DONEGAN who finished the 54 holes tied 6th after a 73.

John DOYLE (IRL) played his way into the tournament and 3rd place with the best morning round; a bogey free 66 with just 31 shots required on the back nine.

Timothy CHAN (HKG) 67, Mark STOCKDALE (ENG) & Harley SMITH (ENG) both 68 and Diego PATROCINIO LOURENCO (FRA) & Kayun MUDANDA (AUS) both 69 all moved up the leaderboard with under par rounds.

The average Round 3 score from the 53 players who made the cut was 71.53 (-0.47). 36 players shot par or better on Sunday morning.

Round 2

Cameron ADAM (SCO) will take a 2-shot lead into the final day of the St. Andrews Links Trophy after he shot a superb 8-under 64 on the Old Course in Round 2.

Adam’s 132 (-12) total is 2-shots better than his fellow Scot and current Northwestern University teammate Niall SHIELS DONEGAN who stayed in touch with his own 6-under 66.

Thomas HIGGINS (IRL) and Kris KIM (ENG) both shot 7-under 65’s on the Old Course to move into the top 5.

Ominously Christiaan MAAS (RSA), ranked 10th in WAGR, moved up into 4th after a 67 today.

Overnight co-leader Ugo MALCOR -7 slipped to tied 5th but remains in the mix. The other co-leader Loran APPEL could only manage a 75 on Day 2, just making the cut on the 142 (-2) number.

The average Round 2 score was 71.98 (-0.02). There were 72 rounds below par on Saturday with a further 14 of par.

53 players made the top 40 and ties cut and can now look forward to a final 36 holes on the Old Course.

Amongst those to miss out were Jack BIGHAM (ENG) -1, Matthew DODD-BERRY (ENG) Ev, Zach LITTLE (+2), Sam EASTERBROOK (ENG) +3, Dominic CLEMONS (ENG) +4, Matt ROBERTS (WAL) +5, Tommy MORRISON (USA) +5 and defending champion Seb CAVE (ENG) +5.

Round 1

Ugo MALCOR (FRA) and Loran APPEL (NED) both shot 5-under 67’s around the Jubilee Course to share the early lead at the St. Andrews Links Trophy.

Lauri ROSENDAHL (FIN), Louis ANCEAUX (FRA), Cameron ADAM (SCO), Filippo PONZANO (ITA), Niall SHIELS-DONEGAN (SCO) and Josh HILL (ENG) are all 1-shot further back.

The average Round 1 score was 73.15 (+1.15).

48 players recorded under par scores in the opening round. A further 21 players finished the day on Even par. One of the latter group, Paraguay’s Erich FORTIAGE, enjoyed a hole-in-one on 146 yard par 3 5th.

144 golfers will tee off on Friday 6th June in the 36th St. Andrews Links Trophy.

This three day event has become one of the ‘majors’ in men’s amateur golf helped by its venue and timing.

I will be updating this article with daily reports once play gets underway.

Competition Format

The Links Trophy is a 72 hole scratch stroke play competition played annually over the St. Andrews Links in early June.

The field is primarily determined by reference to the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and finished off with various National Golf Union and St. Andrews Links Trust nominations.

This year Round 1 will be played on the Jubilee Course and Round 2 on the Old Course. The New Course is sometimes used for Round 1 as it was last year.

The Jubilee Course plays 6,735 yards to a par of 72. The front nine is 3,186 yards long whilst the tougher back nine is 3,549 yards, both playing to pars of 36. It has a Course Rating of 74.1 and a Slope of 135.

The Old Course has been set up at 7,171 yards for the event and has a par of 72. Both nines have a par of 36 and have similar yardages – the front is 3,535 yards long whilst the back is longer at 3,636 yards. It has a Course Rating of 75.6 and a Slope of 143.

Following a top 40 and ties cut on Saturday the leading players will play a final 36 holes on the Old Course on Sunday.

The winner will be the player who returns the lowest 72 hole aggregate score.

In the event of a tie a sudden death play-off will be held over holes 1 and 18 on the Old Course.

Ties for all other places will be decided by count back – the lowest score for the last 18 holes or the last 9 or 6 or 3 or 1 hole if necessary.

The Field

As this is the first event that is taking place in Great Britain & Ireland after the U.S. college season has ended the field is stronger than we have seen in recent weeks.

The DRVN.Golf Power Estimator is estimating a WAGR rating of 728.6450 for this year’s event*. This compares favourably with 717.2064 in 2023 and 675.4594 in 2024.

30 different countries will be represented in Fife in 2025.

Jonathan BALE (WAL), who is US-based, Seb DESOISA (GIB), Calum SCOTT (SCO), who is turning pro shortly, and Freddie TURNELL (ENG) are the only GB&I players in the WAGR Top 500 who are not competing.

The current weather forecast looks poor; cool with some rain and strong breezes expected every day.

Tee times in Rounds 1 and 2 will start at 7.00am and end at 3.10pm so as with any links course the draw could play a part in proceedings.

Prizes

The winner receives The St Andrews Links Trophy and a commemorative medal.

The runner-up and third place finisher also receive medals.

Reducing cash prizes from £700 to £125 are also awarded to the top 10 finishers.

In addition to the main prizes The Ian Forbes Memorial Cup is awarded for the best aggregate score on the first two days of the Championship, together with £150 cash.

The Open Championship

Introduced in 2023 The Open Amateur Series, which offers an exemption into The Open Championship, is again being run by The R&A.

The player who gains the most WAGR points in the 2025 St. Andrews Links Trophy, Amateur Championship and European Amateur Championship will earn a spot at Royal Portrush in July.

2024 St. Andrews Links Trophy

Seb CAVE (ENG) completed a wire-to-wire victory in the 35th St. Andrews Links Trophy with a 281 (-6) total. The English Midlander shot 66 (New), 69 (Old), 75 (Old) and 71 (Old) to secure the coveted title.

Harley SMITH (ENG) came 2nd ahead of Calum SCOTT (SCO) 3rd on count back after they both completed the tournament on 283 (-4).

Simon HOVDAL (SWE) was one shot behind Cave playing the 18th but a double bogey, having surprisingly pulled his tee shot left and out of bounds, relieved the pressure on the winner and saw the Swede tumble down to 4th place on -3.

Paul BEAUVY (FRA) was 5th on count back from Hovdal with Lars VAN DER VIGHT (NED) -2 6th. The Dutchman’s 67 this afternoon was the best final round score.

Josh HILL (ENG), Will HOPKINS (ENG) and Cameron ADAM (SCO) all finished on -1 to make the top 10.

Past Winners

Only Craig WATSON (1992 and 1998), the former GB&I Walker Cup captain, and Barclay HOWARD (1994 and 1996) have won the title twice.

The most famous winner is Justin ROSE who won in 1997.

Interestingly given the normally cosmopolitan nature of the fields the Links Trophy has only been won by players from outside GB&I on four occasions – Australia’s Stuart BOVIER (1990), Daan HUIZING from The Netherlands (2012), Federico ZUCCHETTI from Italy (2015) and Connor MCKINNEY (AUS) from Australia (2022).

Huizing, who had won the 2012 Lytham Trophy by 11 shots just a few weeks earlier, set a scoring record of -23 in 2012 (65 New, 64, 68 and 67 all Old) and won by an astonishing 14 shots.

Scottish Men’s Open Championship – 2025 Preview & Results

ROUND 4

Eliot BAKER (ENG) won the Scottish Men’s Open Championship at North Berwick by 7-shots, continuing the recent English dominance in this competition.

Three consecutive bogeys from the 2nd hole by Billy DOWLING (AUS) no doubt helped to settle leader Eliot BAKER (ENG) into the final round. Baker would go on to make four birdies himself on the front nine, going out in 33 shots, and when he eagled the 11th the Championship was effectively over as a contest. To his credit Baker, who also won the Portuguese International Amateur Championship earlier this year, saw out the remaining holes with ease.

Emil RIEGGER (USA) and Marian LUDWIG (GER) both finished with 67’s to secure 4th and 5th place respectively. Daniel HAYES (ENG) finished 6th on -8 after posting a 70 and 69 on the final day.

Tom OSBORNE (ENG), Timothy CHAN (HKG), Dian KRUGER (RSA), Ben BROWN (ENG), Mike GRAY (SCO), Morgan BLYTHE (ENG) and George CANNON (SCO) all finished the 72 holes on -7 to make up the top 13.

ROUND 3

Eliot BAKER (ENG) moved into a 1-shot lead at the Scottish Men’s Open Championship with a 7-under 64. He started the final round on -16.

Billy DOWLING (AUS) came home in 31 shots for a 67 to remain firmly in the mix on -15.

Dowling’s compatriot Kayun MUDADANA posted a 68 to start the final circuit on -11.

George CANNON -9 is 4th after a 69 and Emil RIEGGER (USA) -7 5th after a 70.

ROUND 2

Billy DOWLING (AUS) backed up his opening 64 with a solid 4-under 67 to take a 2-shot lead into the final round of the Scottish Men’s Open Championship.

Eliot BAKER (ENG) -9 is 2nd and Kayun MUDADANA (AUS) -8 3rd after they impressed on Saturday with a 66 and 64 respectively at North Berwick.

Scottish trio George CANNON -7 4th and Gregor TAIT -6 & Andrew DAVIDSON -6 tied 5th are nicely in the mix heading into the final day.

43 players made the top 40 and ties cut which fell at 143 (+1).

ROUND 1

Billy DOWLING (AUS) took the early lead in the Scottish Men’s Open Championship with a nine birdie 64 (-7) around North Berwick’s West Links.

Morgan BLYTHE (ENG) -6 and George CANNON (SCO) -5 played their way into 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Blythe enjoyed eight birdies in his round whilst Cannon delivered a bogey-free 66.

Eliot BAKER (ENG), Herman HUUS (NOR) and Harry THOMAS (ENG) are all tied 4th on -4.

On a good scoring day 31 players finished their rounds with an under par score with a further 22 shooting even par 71’s.

The 58th Scottish Men’s Open Stroke Play Championship starts on Friday 30th May at North Berwick Golf Club.

Format

This open scratch amateur competition consists of 72 holes of stroke play.

18 holes will be played on both Friday 30th May and Saturday 31st May.

A 36 hole cut will then take place with only the leading 40 competitors and ties qualifying for the final two rounds which will be played on Sunday 1st June.

In the event of a tie for the Championship there will be a sudden death play off. All other ties will be resolved via card count back.

Field

144 competitors will start the 2025 Championship.

The field will be made up of (1) the 55 entrants with the highest WAGRs, (2) the next 55 players with the lowest WHS Handicap Index, (3) up to 12 Scottish Golf nominations and (4) a minimum of 24 players via the Pre-Qualifying event (see below).

The busy amateur schedule means that the Championship continues to struggle to attract a top class field despite often hosting it on some of the world’s best courses. The Scottish Open is being played adjacent to the U.S. NCAA Division I National Championship and East of Ireland Amateur Open Championship, after the Brabazon Trophy and before the St. Andrews Links Trophy and Amateur Championship.

The drvn.golf WAGR Power Estimator is suggesting a field strength number of c.285.0000* for the 2025 event. By way of comparison the Championship’s Power was 306.7519 in 2024 (Muirfield), 252.0597 in 2023 (Meldrum House) and 601.8878 in 2022 (Cruden Bay).

Pre-Qualifying

Scottish Golf, for the fourth time, held an 18 hole Pre-Qualifying event. This year it took place on Tuesday 27th May at Haddington G.C.

Kenneth GLEN (SCO), Mason ROLOFF (USA) and Adam GILES (SCO), who all posted 69’s (-2), were the co-medalists leading 28 players into the main event. The cut fell at +2 with 6 of the 11 players on that number progressing after count back. The players who missed out will now have to make do with places on the reserve list.

North Berwick

The Championship is being played on North Berwick’s West Links course.

The North Berwick Golf Club was formed in 1832 which led to organised golf first being played over this unique piece of land.

The Championship tees can stretch the course to 6,579 yards with a par of 71. The par 4 13th “Pit”, which plays to a green behind a wall, the 14th “Perfection”, the par 3 15th “Redan” and the 16th “Gate” with it’s deep gully in the green are the signature holes.

Between 1935 and 1975 the annual Scottish Boys’ Championship, inaugurated by North Berwick G.C. and later taken over by Scottish Golf, took place over the West Links. Many other major events have been staged here since, including Final Qualifying for The Open Championship on six occasions (last 2013), The Ladies’ British Amatuer Stroke Play Championship (2017), The Seniors’ Amateur StrokePlay Championship (2019) and The Scottish Boys Open Championship (2020).

Prizes

The Winner receives the distinctive silver Championship Trophy and a Crystal Award.

Crystal Awards are also given to the runner-up and third place finisher.

The weather forecast suggests the Championship will be played largely in sunny conditions, albeit with dome rain expected on the all-important final day.

2024 Results

Dominic CLEMONS (ENG) won the 2024 Scottish Men’s Open Championship with a 260 (-24) total.

His final day 65 (-6) and 62 (-9) saw him take the title at Muirfield by an astonishing 17 shots.

Jordan BURNAND (RSA) -7 finished 2nd on last round count back, Kai KOMULAINEN (AUS) -7 3rd, Jamie NIELSEN (DEN) -6 4th and Matteo CRISTONI (ITA), who had a final round hole-in-one on the 16th, -4 5th.

Jack MCDONALD -1 8th was the highest finishing Scot with Charlie FORSTER (ENG) Ev also finishing in the top 10.

Just eight of the 44 players who made the cut finished under par after 72 holes.

Brabazon Trophy – 2025 Preview & Results

ROUND 4

Biagio Andrea GAGLIARDI (ITA) shot a final round 70 to win the 2025 Brabazon Trophy by 2-shots with a 276 (-8) total. He is the first Italian to win this prestigious trophy.

Freddie TURNELL (ENG) moved up to 2nd place with a 69, the joint best round of the day.

Eliot BAKER (ENG) and Mattias VARJUN (EST) both finished Round 4 with 1-over 72’s to complete the Championship in tied 3rd place.

Australian Billy DOWLING finished strongly with a 69 to take 5th place. Harley SMITH (ENG) -3 finished 6th and Jack MCDONALD (SCO), Ben BOLTON (ENG) & Kayun MUDADANA (AUS) -2 tied 7th.

ROUND 3

Biagio Andrea GAGLIARDI (ITA) moved into the lead on 206 (-7) at Hankley Common after shooting a 2-under 69 on Day 3.

Mattias VARJUN (EST) and Eliot BAKER (ENG) are tied 2nd on -6 after they posted a 70 and 71 respectively.

A best of the week and new course record 63 (-8), which included 10 birdies, from Australian Kayun MUDADANA saw him jump up the leaderboard to tied 4th. He was joined by Ben BOLTON (ENG) and Freddie TURNELL (ENG) who benefitted from a 68 and 71 in Round 3.

Three other English players, Harry CROCKETT, Jake SOWDEN and Harley SMITH finished the day tied 7th alongside Sweden’s Simon HOVDAL on 210 (-3).

Mason HOWELL (USA) shot a blemish free 64, the second best round of the week, to move into tied 12th. Whilst there was no hole-in-one for the American today he did manage an eagle on the 13th and five other birdies in his third round.

ROUND 2

Eliot BAKER (ENG) and Tom HUGHES (ENG) maintained their share of the lead on 136 (-6) after they both recorded 1-under par 70’s at Hankley Common on Day 2 of the Brabazon Trophy.

Simon HOVDAL (SWE), tied for 3rd, became the fifth player to shoot a 66 in the Championship with his bogey free effort in Round 2.

Biagio Andrea GAGLIARDI (ITA) 67 and Mattias VARJUN (EST) 69 moved up the leaderboard to join the Swede on 137 (-5) for the 36 holes played.

Freddie TURNELL (ENG) is 6th on 139 (-3) after he posted a 68 and now sits alongside compatriots Harley SMITH 70 and Jake SOWDEN (ENG) 71 as well as in form Welshman Matt ROBERTS 72.

Scoring on Friday proved harder than yesterday with just 19 players going under par and 10 playing to the par of 71. This compared with 25 and 16 players doing so respectively in Round 1.

60 players advanced to the weekend after the top 60 and ties cut fell at a higher than expected 147 (+5).

17 year old Mason HOWELL (USA) recorded a hole-in-one on the 167 yard par 3 2nd hole which helped him make the cut on the mark.

ROUND 1

Ville VIRKKALA (FIN), Eliot BAKER (ENG) and Tom HUGHES (ENG) share the Round 1 lead at the Brabazon Trophy after they all recorded 66’s at Hankley Common.

Virkkkala played his opening nine holes in a 6-under 30 shots before three bogeys on his back nine took a little of the shine of his round.

Baker and Hughes both enjoyed eagles in their rounds; the Tiverton man’s came at the the 598 yard par 5 8th hole whilst Formby’s Hughes achieved his on the shorter 496 yard par 5 13th.

Matt ROBERTS (WAL) started and finished his rounds with bogeys but six birdies in between saw him finish the day tied for 4th alongside Richard TEDER (EST) and Alexander FARMER (SCO). Teder holed his approach on the short par 4 17th for an eagle whilst Farmer enjoyed seven birdies in his opening circuit.

From the field of 114 players 25 players recorded under par rounds with a further 16 shooting a par 71.

The 79th English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the Brabazon Trophy will be played at Hankley Common Golf Club, between Thursday 22nd and Sunday 25th May 2025.

I will be updating this article with a scores link and daily reports once play commences.

Format

This four day competition consists of 72 holes of stroke play golf with 18 holes being played daily.

A 36 hole cut will reduce the field to the leading 60 competitors and ties.

In the event of a tie for the Championship there will be a sudden death play off.

All other places will be determined by a card count-back, starting with the final round and working backwards from there.

Field

144 competitors from 17 different countries will contest the 2025 Brabazon Trophy Championship.

With the NCAA U.S. College golf season, where the majority of the leading International and GB&I players are now engaged, not finishing until the end of May the field quality is understandably impacted.

Just four of GB&I’s top 20 WAGR-ranked players are competing. The third highest ranked, Dominic CLEMONS (ENG) #44, who played in the US Open Qualifier at Walton Heath (on 19th May) – 30 miles away from Hankley Common – has chosen to skip the event.

The DRVN.golf Power Estimator suggests the event will have a WAGR Power figure of c.368.0000 in 2025 (Actual: 384.3262). This continues the decline seen in recent years where the number was 617.0619 in 2022, 467.2656 in 2023 and 454.8860 last year.

The majority of the field were exempt with starting places offered to a number of national golf federations and to those players who have performed well in other recent Championships.

Two other prizes are connected to the Brabazon Trophy competition: –

The George Henriques Salver is awarded to the leading GB&I player in the Championship under the age of 20.

The Philip Scrutton Jug is awarded to the player returning the best aggregate scores in The Brabazon Trophy and The Berkshire Trophy. The latter was played on 17-18 May and won by Jake SOWDEN (ENG) who is also competing this week.

Hankley Common Golf Club

Hankley Common G.C. in Tilford, near Farnham in Surrey was first opened as a nine hole course in May 1897. A further nine holes were added by James Braid in 1923/24 but it was only after Harry Colt undertook some remodelling and replaced three holes in 1935 that it started to be recognised as one of England’s best inland courses.

It sits on a huge piece of heathland which allows the holes to meander across the property often in isolation. The area has been designated as a ‘site of special scientific interest’ due to its range of trees and abundant wildlife.

Off the back tees the course measures 6,904 yards and plays to a par of 71, there being only one par 5 on the back nine.

The uphill par three 7th is the ‘signature hole’ but in truth their are many memorable holes on the property.

There are a number of roads, paths and tracks on the course all of which have been deemed integral with no free relief available.

Hankley Common has hosted a number of major events through the years most recently the English Men’s Amateur Championship (Closed) in 2019, which was won by Conor Gough, and the R&A Men’s Home Internationals in 2021.

2024 Brabazon Trophy

Gregor GRAHAM (SCO) won the 2024 Brabazon Trophy at Hollinwell G.C. becoming the fifth Scotsman to collect this prestigious title.

Due to poor weather the Championship was played over 48 holes with Graham winning with a -9 total.

History, Past Winners and Records

The English Amateur International Trophy competition was first played in 1947.

In 1957 the official title was changed to the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

The current trophy was donated by Lord Brabazon of Tara in 1948 and the event has come to be widely known as the Brabazon Trophy.

The first player to successfully defend the title was Ronnie WHITE who won at Birkdale in 1950 and nearby Formby in 1951.

Shortly afterwards Philip SCRUTTON won the Brabazon three times in four years (1952, ‘54 & ‘55).

Sir Michael BONALLACK has four wins to his name. The first came at Royal Cinque Ports in 1964 and the last at Hillside in 1971. At Moortown in 1969, with play-offs having been discarded at this time, he shared the title with Rodney FOSTER.

Other well known British winners of the Brabazon include Gordon BRAND Jnr, Sandy LYLE (2), Peter MCEVOY, Ronan RAFFERTY and Ronnie SHADE (3).

Other notable winners include well known pros Ignacio GARRIDO (1992), Peter HANSON (1998) and Charl SCHWARTZEL (2002), Jordan SMITH (2013) and Sam BAIRSTOW (2021).

NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship – 2025 Preview & Results

OKLAHOMA STATE (4) won the NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship at Omni La Costa.

This was The Cowboys 12th national title placing them tied 3rd alongside Princeton. Only Yale with 21 wins and Houston with 16 now lie ahead of them in the all-time list.

The victorious line-up included four sophomores and one freshman, all of whom will ominously be returning for Oklahoma State next year.

OKLAHOMA STATE (4) beat VIRGINIA (7) in the Final 4.0-1.0 at Omni La Costa in California.

The four wins came from Filip FAHLBERG-JOHNSSON (SWE), Eric LEE (USA), Gaven LANE (USA) and Ethan FANG (USA).

Fahlberg-Johnsson was a new recruit this year whilst Lee and Fang both transferred in from California last summer as long-term coach Alan Bratten freshened up his line-up who this time last year failed to advance from the 54 hole top 15 first Stroke Play Stage.

MATCH PLAY – SEMI-FINALS (PM)

VIRGINIA (7) beat FLORIDA (3) 4.0-1.0 in the opening Semi-Final, winning all four of the opening five games.

Luke POULTER (ENG / Florida) lost his game against WAGR #4 Ben JAMES (USA / Virginia) by 1 Hole. Poulter conceded the par 5 18th hole to James after getting into trouble and seeing his opponent nearly hole his green side bunker shot for eagle.

In the other Semi-Final OKLAHOMA STATE (4) beat OLE MISS. (8) by 3.0-2.0.

Eric LEE (USA / Oklahoma State) winning the decisive final game against Cohen TROLIO (USA / Ole Miss.) on the 19th hole (with a par 3 on the 16th).

MATCH PLAY – QUARTER FINALS (AM)

The Quarter Finals of the NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship were won by VIRGINIA (7), FLORIDA (3), OKLAHOMA STATE (4) and OLE MISS. (8).

Luke POULTER (ENG / Florida) lost his match against European Amateur champion Tommy MORRISON (USA / Texas) but saw his team win 3.0-2.0.

The surprise losses of Stroke Play No. 1 seeds ARIZONA and the defending champions and No. 2 seeds AUBURN has certainly opened the Championship up.

Since the NCAA introduced a Match Play Stage in 2009 to determine the Team champions the only No. 1 Stroke Play seeds to win are Oklahoma State in 2018.

STROKE PLAY ROUND 4

TEAM

ARIZONA STATE earned medalist honours in the Stroke Play Qualifying Stage of the National Championship with a -14 total team score.

The other seven Match Play spots were taken by AUBURN (-12) 2nd, FLORIDA (-9) 3rd, OKLAHOMA STATE (-1) 4th, OKLAHOMA (Ev) 5th, TEXAS (+5) 6th, VIRGINIA (+9) 7th and OLE MISS. (+11) 8th at Omni La Costa in California.

Sadly from a GB&I perspective FLORIDA STATE (+12) 9th and TEXAS TECH (+14) 10th were the two teams who narrowly missed out.

Prior to play commencing WAKE FOREST (18 shots) beat GEORGIA TECH (19 shots) in the five player / hole stroke play play-off to take their place in the final Stroke Play round. Wake had a disappointing day though and finished last of the final 15 teams.

INDIVIDUAL

Junior Michael LA SASSO (USA / Ole Miss.) -11 was today crowned the NCAA Division I Individual National Champion.

His victory earned him an exemption into next month’s U.S. Open Championship and the 2026 Masters Invitational.

Phichaksn MAICHON (THA / Texas A&M) -9 finished 2nd, Preston STOUT (USA / Oklahoma State) -7 3rd and Jackson KOIVUN (USA / Auburn) & Josele  BALLESTER (ESP / Arizona State) -6 tied 4th.

Koivun’s top 10 result earned him the final point he required to reach the magical 20 in the PGA Tour Accelerated Rankings. He therefore became the third player to earn their PGA Tour card through this route. He plans to complete his junior season at Auburn and defer his membership to June 2026.

Despite opening his tournament with a 5-over 77 Calum SCOTT (SCO / Texas Tech) showed his experience to finish as the leading GB&I player in tied 27th on +2.

Wake Forest’s team play-off victory this morning meant that ZACH LITTLE (ENG / UNLV) missed out on the opportunity to qualify as an Individual as Georgia Tech had two players, Hiroshi Tai -1 T14 and Carson Kim +1 T22, who were ahead of him in the standings.

STROKE PLAY ROUND 3

TEAM

After 54 holes AUBURN (-10) lead the Stroke Play Qualifying Stage at Omni La Costa in California.

ARIZONA STATE (-6) and OKLAHOMA (-3) both dropped a place in the standings after they could only manage a +7 team score in Round 3.

FLORIDA (-1) will start Day 4 in 4th place with OKLAHOMA STATE (+5) in 5th.

For religious reasons BRIGHAM YOUNG (+14) played their third round on Thursday rather than on Sunday. This proved to be advantageous as their +1 team score was much better than the average and helped them to easily progress within the top 15 teams.

The fight for the top 8 Match Play qualifying spots looks like it should be exciting with all of the currently over-par teams still in with a chance of progressing.

WAKE FOREST and GEORGIA TECH will play-off on Monday morning for the final Round 4 team spot (15th) after they both completed the 54 holes with a +17 team score.

The 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s National Golf Championship will be played at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California on 23rd-28th May 2025.

This is the second of three NCAA National Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships that will be staged at La Costa. The tournament is again being hosted by the University of Texas.

A former long time PGA Tour stop off the North Course has recently been re-designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner with the two 2024 NCAA Golf Championships marking its official re-opening.

The men’s course will play 7,538 yards with a par of 72.

30 5-man teams and 6 individuals not on those teams qualified to play through six Regional events played on 12th-14th May. To learn more about these Regionals please read my earlier article – NCAA Division I Men’s Regionals – 2025 Preview & Results

At the National Championship 54 holes of stroke play will be played on 23rd-25th May. A cut will then take place which will see the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on those teams play a final 18 holes on 26th May. Team scores in the stroke play stage are based on a best four from five players cumulative total. After 72 holes an Individual champion is crowned with the leading 8 teams progressing to a match play stage. Seeded match play will then take place on 27th-28th May to determine the Team national champions.

NCAA Division I Women’s National Championship – 2025 Preview & Results

MATCH PLAY – FINAL

NORTHWESTERN (3) upset favourites and defending champions STANFORD (1) 3.0-2.0 to win the 2025 NCAA Division I National Championship at Omni La Costa in California.

It was Northwestern’s first Championship in the history of it’s women’s golf program and a great reward for their 17 year head coach Emily Fletcher.

MATCH PLAY – SEMI-FINALS

Stanford beat Florida State by 3.5-1.5 points to set up a Championship Match with Northwestern who overcame Oregon 3.0-2.0.

Megha GANNE (USA) beat Lottie WOAD (ENG) on the 20th Hole of their game whilst Kelly XU (USA) took out Sophia FULLBROOK (ENG) 5&4.

MATCH PLAY – QUARTER FINALS

The four top seeds, Stanford (1), Oregon (2), Northwestern (3) and Florida State (4), all progressed from the Quarter Final matches at the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships.

In Florida State’s 3.5-1.5 victory over Southern California Lottie WOAD (ENG) beat Jasmine KOO (USA) by 4&3 but Sophie FULLBROOK (ENG) lost 6&5 to Kylie CHONG (USA).

Monday 19th May 2025

STROKE PLAY ROUND 4

TEAM

STANFORD earned medalist honours with a -27 total team score. This was the lowest score in NCAA Women’s Golf Championship history and a full 21 shots better than the 2nd placed team OREGON. It was also the fifth consecutive year that Stanford have earned medalist honours.

NORTHWESTERN (+2), FLORIDA STATE (+3), SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (+4), ARKANSAS (+6), TEXAS (+8) and VIRGINIA (+15) made up the leading eight teams who advanced to the Match Play Stage.

Sadly from a GB&I perspective ARIZONA STATE (+16), SOUITH CAROLINA (+17) and LSU (+17) were the teams that narrowly missed out on advancing.

INDIVIDUAL

Sophomore Marie JOSE MARIN (COL / Arkansas) won the Individual title with a -12 total at Omni La Costa after she finished off the Stroke Play Stage with a solid 3-under 69.

STANFORD were even better on Day 3 shooting an outstanding 18-under par team score at Omni La Costa. They now lead NORTHWESTERN (-8) by 15-shots heading into the final stroke play qualifying round and look set to secure the top Match Play seeding.

OREGON (-2) are 3rd, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (Ev) 4th and FLORIDA STATE & ARKANSAS (+3) tied 5th.

The 54 hole cut, which sees only the leading 15 teams progress to the final stroke play round, fell at +18.

Marie JOSE MARIN (COL / Arkansas) moved in to the Individual lead on -9 with a bogey-free 65 (-7) in the third round.

STANFORD produced a superb 10-under par team score on Day 2 to jump into the lead on -5. The Cardinals are now the only team under par in the Stroke Play Stage of the Championship.

Overnight leaders VANDERBILT, +18 in Round 2, tumbled down the leaderboard to 13th on +12 at Omni La Costa.

2024 Results

STANFORD (#1) beat UCLA (#6) 3-2-0 in the Final of the NCAA Div. I Women’s National Championship at Omni La Costa Golf Resort & Spa in California.

The Cardinals, led by their Scottish head coach Anne Walker, won their third Championship in the match play era and second in three years.

Senior Rachel Heck who has battled injuries in recent years secured the winning point in the final game. Kelly Xu and Megha Ganne were the other point winners.

Irish Amateur Open Championship – 2025 Preview & Results

Round 4

Stuart GREHAN (IRL) beat Lewy HAYWARD (ENG) on the third play-off hole to win the Flogas-sponsored Irish Amateur Open Championship at Seapoint Golf Links.

Both players finished the 72 holes on 273 (-15) after they both impressively produced bogey-free rounds under the pressure of the final day; recently reinstated amateur Grehan, who plays out of neighbouring County Louth, a 66 and Hayward a 69.

Defending champion Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) finished as he started with the low round of the day; his 65, which included eight birdies, lifting him up the leaderboard into 3rd place.

Matt ROBERTS (WAL) backed up his tied 3rd result at last week’s Lytham Trophy with a 4th place finish in Ireland.

Greg HOLMES (ENG) -11 finished in 5th and Gerry DUNNE (IRL) -11 6th on final round count back.

The average Round 4 score was 72.10 with 34 of the remaining 59 players shooting par or better.

Saturday 10th May 2025

Round 3

Lewy HAYWARD (ENG) and Gerry DUNNE (IRL) both recorded 2-under par 70’s in the third round at Seapoint to give themselves a 2-shot lead heading into tomorrow’s final round. They will both start the day on 204 (-12) after strong finishes; Hayward birdied his closing two holes whilst Dunne eagled the 18th.

Matt ROBERTS (WAL) enjoyed the second best round of the day with his 67, moving into 3rd alone on 206 (-10).

Archie DAVIES (WAL) and Stuart GREHAN (IRL) are tied 4th on -9 with Greg HOLMES (ENG) two shots further back in 6th place.

Overnight co-leader and defending champion Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) will start the final round in tied 7th after he shot a disappointing 76 to probably fall out of contention on -6.

The field found scoring slightly harder on Day 3 with the average score being 73.94, although more players, 51, shot par or better.

Shot of the day came from Conor HICKEY (IRL) who recorded a hole in one on the par 3 187 yard 17th.

59 players made the top 50 and ties 54 hole cut which fell at 219 (+3).

Round 2

Lewy HAYWARD (ENG), Gerry DUNNE (IRL) and Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) share the 36 hole lead on 134 (-10).

Hayward, alongside Lewis GOWDY (IRL), produced the joint best round of the day with a blemish free 7-under 65.

The average Round 2 score was 73.71, slightly higher than yesterday, with 49 competitors shooting par or better at Seapoint Golf Links.

The average Round 1 score was 73.41 with 56 competitors shooting par or better.

The Irish Men’s Amateur Open Championship, sponsored by Flogas, starts on Thursday 8th May 2025 at Seapoint Golf Links near Drogheda, County Louth on Ireland’s east coast.

It will be the 86th playing of this prestigious Championship but the first time it has visited Seapoint.

Format

Organised by Golf Ireland the Irish Amateur Open is a 72-hole stroke play event played over four days.

18 holes will be played on each of the first three days before a top 50 and ties cut is made. A final 18 holes will then be played by the leading competitors on Sunday.

A tie for the Championship will be resolved by a sudden death play-off. All other ties will be resolved by a last eighteen and then last nine countback.

The Irish Amateur Open Champion Golfer is awarded a superb silver trophy (see photo below). Irish winners are allowed to take the trophy back to their Club for the year whereas overseas winners must return it to the organisers after the prize presentation.

Players

132 golfers will contest the 2025 Championship.

It will also be interesting to see how Seapoint’s Dylan KEATING (IRL) gets on around his home course.

Like all events played before June the field quality isn’t helped by the large number of GB&I and European players now playing on the U.S. college circuit.

Players will tee off, from the 1st and 10th tees, between 8.00am and 2.55pm in three-balls on each of the first three days so changes in the weather and wind speeds throughout each day could play a big part in scoring.

Course

Seapoint is a modern championship links course designed by Des Smyth in the early 1990s and opened for play in June 1993.

Located adjacent to Termonfeckin Beach the course is 7,150 yards from the back tees and has a par of 72.

Over the last 30 years it has hosted a number of professional events as well as the Irish Amateur Close Championship in 2014 which was won by JR Galbraith.

The 2024 Irish Amateur Open Championship

Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) won the 2024 Flogas Irish Amateur Open Championship at County Sligo G.C., his first Irish Championship.

McClean’s 273 (-11) total was 2-shots better than Liam NOLAN (IRL). TJ FORD (IRL) produced a superb final round 65 to finish in 3rd place on -6. Oswestry’s Tom MATTHEWS (WAL) -5 came in 4th and Hugh FOLEY (IRL) -4 5th.

History, Past Winners and Records

The Irish Amateur Open Championship was first played in 1892 with early winners including the English amateur greats John Ball and Harold Hilton.

Between 1894 and 1901 (6 years) the competition was played as part of the Irish Championship Meeting alongside a professional tournament.

The Championship was not played during both World Wars.

It was also not played between 1960 and 1994 due to a lack of interest from overseas players amidst concerns over safety.

Prior to 1958 it was a match play event but since returning to the amateur calendar in 1995 it has been 72 holes of stroke play.

NCAA Division I Men’s Regionals – 2025 Preview & Results

Here is a summary of the results from the six 54-hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships which were played on 12th-14th May 2025.

The low five teams (30 in total) and the low individual (6 in total) not on one of those teams from each Regional advanced to the National Championships.

Regional Championships

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 12th-14th May 2025.

81 teams and 45 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 30th April 2025 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 28 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2025 Regionals. The remaining teams progressed based on their performances throughout the season.

13 teams and 10 individuals were allocated to three of the Regional venues with the remaining sites hosting 14 teams and 5 individuals. As always the draw has been made in such a way that all of the fields are of a similar strength.

Teams of five players play 72 holes of stroke play with their best four scores counting towards their team’s total score. Players, who play in each round, are also eligible for a separate Individual competition.

I will be updating this article with a summary of the results when play is completed.

National Championships

5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California on 23rd-28th May 2025.

The National Championships start with 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams and 9 individuals, not on an advancing team, then progress to a final 18 holes of stroke play. After these 72 holes have been played an Individual champion is determined and the top 8 teams advance to a match play stage to establish the Team champions.

Auburn are the defending champions after they defeated Florida State 3-2 in the 2024 Championship Final in Carlsbad. Georgia Tech sophomore Hiroshi Tai (SGP) won the Individual title with a 72 hole total score of 285 (-3).

Details of the six Regional Championships are shown below with each team and individual listed in seed order and, if they earned automatic qualification, the Conference Championship they recently won to do so.

GB&I players attached to the qualifying colleges are highlighted in bold blue type. Each team is now allowed to take a Reserve to the event so it is possible some may not play or be subbed in and out during the week.

37 GB&I players are featuring at the Regional Championships with 3 of these starting as substitutes.

The Lytham Trophy – 2025 Preview & Results

Hugo LE GOFF, the highest ranked WAGR player in the field at #93, won the 59th Lytham Trophy becoming the first Frenchman to achieve this honour.

Le Goff also won this year’s Spanish International Amateur Championship at the start of March. He will be moving to the USA in the summer having earned a golf scholarship at the University of Virginia.

Disappointingly the event only generated a WAGR Power Rating of 409.3219, the lowest ever recorded for the Lytham Trophy.

Round 4

France’s Hugo LE GOFF produced a superb final round 66, which included six birdies, to come through the field and win the 2025 Lytham Trophy.

Le Goff’s 285 (+5) total was one better than 2nd placed Tom OSBORNE (ENG) who matched the winner’s 33 on the back nine to deliver a well timed 69 of his own.

Max HOPKINS (ENG) finished 3rd, recent Battle Trophy winner Andrew DAVIDSON (SCO) 4th, Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) 5th and Matt ROBERTS (WAL) 6th after they all finished on 288 (+8) and their places had to determined on last 18 and 9 hole count backs.

Gregor TAIT (SCO) +11 8th, Oliver CATON (ENG) +11 9th, Jamie VAN WYK (ENG) +12 11th, Eliot BAKER (ENG) +12 12th and David KITT (IRL) +14 14th were the other GB&I players to finish in the top 15 at Royal Lytham.

The other 54 hole co-leader Michele FERRERO (ITA) will be disappointed with his final round 78 which saw him having to settle for 10th place. 

The average Round 4 score was 75.91 (Rd 3: 75.12). Le Goff and Osborne delivered the only under par rounds whilst two other players, Luke O’NEILL (IRL) and Henry FEATHERSTONE (ENG), shot even par 70s on the final circuit.

After rounds of 74 and 76 respectively Matt ROBERTS (WAL) and Michele FERRERO (ITA) fell back to +3, sharing the 54 hole lead at the Lytham Trophy.

Eliot BAKER (ENG) and Oliver CATON (ENG) on +5 and Andrew DAVIDSON (SCO), Max HOPKINS (ENG) and Luke KELLY +6 are all within striking distance.

The average Round 3 score by the reduced field of 43 players was 75.12. As in Round 2 there were no under par scores. Just two competitors managing to deliver an even par 70 on Sunday morning.

Round 2

Despite starting his second round with a double bogey five and also finishing with a bogey on 18 Michele FERRERO (ITA) managed to negotiate Royal Lytham in a very creditable even par 70 to take a 2 shot lead into the final day.

Matt ROBERTS (WAL) and Oliver CATON (ENG) are the Italian’s nearest challengers on 139 (-1). Roberts shot a 72 and Caton a 71 to stay in touch with the leader. They were both 3-over after just four holes of their second rounds so fought back well to stay in contention.

On a tough scoring day only these three players remained under par for the tournament after 36 holes. 

Gregor TAIT (SCO) +1, Luke KELLY (ENG) +2 and Max HOPKINS (ENG), Daniel HAYES (ENG), Eliot BAKER (ENG) & Jackson GARNETT (ENG) +3 will all know that a good final day could still take them to the title.

44 players made the cut which fell at 148 (+8) albeit one of these, Judd SUNDELSON (RSA), withdrew from the competition after his second round.

The average Round 2 score was 77.26 which was over 2 shots worse than that seen in Round 1 (75.03). No under par scores were achieved on the day with just three players producing an even par 70.

Friday 2nd May 2025

Round 1

Jackson GARNETT (ENG) leads the 59th Lytham Trophy after an opening 66 (-4). Jackson’s round contained five birdies including one on the 1st and one on the last.

Matt ROBERTS (WAL), who finished 4th last year, sits alongside Italian Michele FERRERO in tied 2nd after they both recorded 67’s. Roberts recorded one of 11 eagles in Round 1 ; his coming on the short par 4 13th.

Daniel HAYES (ENG), who enjoyed a top 10 finish in 2024, Oliver CATON (ENG) and Gregor TAIT (SCO) are one shot further back in tied 4th place.

16 players out of the 144 starters finished on even par or better. The average Round 1 score was 75.03. 

There were two holes-in-one on Day 1; David KITT (IRL) on the 163 yard 9th and Charlie ROBB (ENG) on the 196 yard 12th.

The 2025 Lytham Trophy will be played between 2nd and 4th May at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England.

Traditionally viewed as the first major event in the Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) men’s amateur golf season it is always a privilege for the players to compete on this superb links course.

Format and Tee Times

144 scratch golfers from across Europe will tee off in what will be the 59th playing of this prestigious competition.

The Lytham Trophy is a 72-hole stroke play event. 18 holes are played on the first two days before a top 40 and ties cut is made. 36-holes are then played on the final day by the leading competitors.

In the event of a tie for the lowest score there will be a 3-hole stroke play play-off on holes 1, 2 and 18. If a winner still hasn’t been determined then the play-off moves to sudden death over the same holes.

Players

Most of GB&I’s leading home-based amateurs are competing. However, due to the popularity of U.S. college golf, where the playing season ends in late May, many notable names will unfortunately be missing.

In 2024 the WAGR Event Power Number for this event was 579.9235. It was 661.0000 in 2022 and 566.2711 in 2023.

Nine players in the field are ranked in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) Top 250 with 19 in the Top 500.

Course

The Royal Lytham course presents a stern test. Playing off the blue championship tees competitors have to meet a 7,091 yard par 70 challenge; the front nine being 3,427 yards, a par 34, and the back nine being 3,664 yards, a par 36.

Players will tee off between 7.10am and 3.30pm on the Friday and Saturday so changes in the weather and wind speeds throughout the first two days can play a big part in scoring.

The 2024 Lytham Trophy

Will HOPKINS (ENG) won the 58th Lytham Trophy after a three hole play-off with Tomi BOWEN (WAL) and James ASHFIELD (WAL). All three players finished the regulation 72 holes on 279 (-1).

Matt ROBERTS (Ev) made it three Welshmen in the top 4 with a strong performance on the final day. Ukraine’s Lev GRINBERG finished tied 5th alongside South Africa’s Daniel BENNETT and Lytham member Jamie VAN WYK (all on +1). England Internationals Daniel HAYES (+2) and Ben BOLTON (+3) finished in the top 10.

History, Past Winners and Records

The competition was first played in 1965 after the Club identified a need for a new top class amateur competition and one that could be played in the North of England.

A date on the first weekend in May was established and a 72 hole stroke play format adopted.

Member’s subscribed to purchase the unique sputnik trophy. This remains at Royal Lytham with a smaller replica handed out annually to the winner.

The event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

As one would expect the list of past winner’s is a who’s who of GB&I amateur golf.

In 2004 21 year old James HEATH won with a record score of 266 (-18), recording rounds of 67, 68, 66, and 65. Garth McGimpsey, the then Walker Cup captain, described Heath’s performance as ‘the best amateur golf I’ve ever seen’.

No one else has ever come close to this low scoring mark. The next best scores being Matthew JORDAN‘s 272 (-12) in 2018 and Daan HUIZING’s 273 (-11) in 2013.

In 1999 the Lytham Trophy was won by German Tino SCHUSTER, the first time a non-GB&I player had been successful.

NCAA Division I Women’s Regionals – 2025 Preview & Results

Here is a summary of the results from the six 54-hole NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regional Championships which were played on 4th-7th May 2025.

The low five teams (30 in total) and the low individual (6 in total) not on one of those teams from each Regional advanced to the National Championships.

Regional Championships

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 5th-7th May 2025.

72 teams and 36 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 23rd April 2025 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 28 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2025 Regionals. The remaining teams progressed based on their performances throughout the season.

12 teams and 6 individuals were allocated to each of the six Regional venues with a strength-of-field metric factored in to ensure balance and fairness across all of them.

Teams of five players play 72 holes of stroke play with their best four scores counting towards their team’s total score. Players, who play in each round, are also eligible for a separate Individual competition.

The leading 5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California on 16th-21st May 2025.

Regional Champion Awards have been given to the team champions at each site since 2024.

I will be updating this article with a summary of the results when play is completed.

National Championships

The Division I Competition Oversight Committee announced in January 2023 that the field for the Division I Women’s Golf National Championships would be increased from 147 to 156. The number of teams was also increased from 27 to 30 with the number of individual participants falling from 12 to 6.

The National Championships start off with 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams and 9 individuals, not on an advancing team, then progress to a final 18 holes of stroke play. After these 72 holes have been played an Individual champion is determined and the top 8 teams advance to a match play stage to establish the Team champions.

Stanford beat UCLA in the Final of the 2024 NCAA Div. I Women’s National Championship in Carlsbad with Adela Cernousek (FRA / Texas A&M) winning the Individual title, her first collegiate win.

The Masters – 2025 Amateur Preview & Results

Results

Rory McILROY (NIR) became the sixth player to win the career grand slam when he overcame Justin ROSE (ENG) with a birdie on the first play-off hole (the 18th). Both players finished the 72 hole Augusta National G.C. test on 277 (-11), 2-shots ahead of Patrick REED (USA) and 3 ahead of defending champion Scottie SCHEFFLER (USA).

No amateur made the cut so no Silver Cup was awarded at The 89th Masters.

53 players made the 36 hole top 50 and ties cut which fell at 146 (+2). 

The average field score in Round 1 was 73.59 which fell to 72.67 in Round 2.

Justin HASTINGS (CAY) produced the lowest round by an amateur shooting an even par 72 on Day 2.

Five amateurs will be playing, the same number as last year.

The primary goal for each amateur is to make the 36 hole cut and if they achieve that to then go on and win the low amateur Silver Cup.

2025 Amateur Player Biographies

The legacy of Bobby Jones, the co-founder of the tournament and a lifelong amateur (at least during his competitive years), means The Masters has always found a place for the world’s leading amateurs.

This year’s intake will see the total number of amateurs to have played in The Masters rise to 464.

The five amateurs competing at The Masters in 2025 are: –

JOSE LUIS BALLESTER BARRIO (ESP), 21 – winner of the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship
The Arizona State senior Ballester beat Noah Kent in last year’s U.S. Amateur final by 2 Holes to secure his place at Augusta.

EVAN BECK (USA), 34 – winner of the 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship
Beck beat Bobby Massa 9&8 in the final of the U.S. Mid-Amateur. After regaining his amateur status he returned to amateur competition in 2021. He is in pole position for the mid-amateur spot on the 2025 U.S. Walker Cup team. Beck now works as an investment analyst at Browns Advisory in Washington D.C.

JUSTIN HASTINGS (CAY), 21 – winner of the 2025 Latin America Amateur Championship
Hastings won the Latin America Amateur at Pilar G.C. in Argentina. He is a senior at San Diego State University.

NOAH KENT (USA), 20 – runner-up at the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship
Floridian Kent now plays his golf at the University of Florida having transferred from Iowa last summer.

HIROSHI TAI (SGP), 23 – winner of the 2024 NCAA Division I Individual Championship 
Tai was born in Hong Kong but represents Singapore; he is their first golfer to compete in The Masters. He was playing for Georgia Tech when he won the NCAA Championship.

U.S. and Amateur champions also receive non-playing honorary invitations which mean they are invited to attend The Masters every year for the rest of their lives.

Jacob Skov Olesen (DEN), 25, the 2024 Amateur champion, and Wenyi Ding (CHI), 20, the 2024 Asia-Pacific Amateur champion, both turned pro since their wins, having won cards on the DP World Tour, which entailed them giving up their exemptions.

By tradition the reigning U.S. Amateur champion is always paired with the reigning Masters champion. Accordingly Jose Luis Ballester has been paired with Scottie Scheffler this year (with Nick Taylor making up the three ball).

Amateur Perks

Only amateur competitors are permitted to stay in the Crow’s Nest accommodation in the clubhouse. Most of them normally spend at least one night there during Masters week.  

The Amateur Dinner, hosted by chairman Fred Ridley and normally attended by around between 50-100 guests, was held in The Founders Room on the evening of Monday 7th April. The Captain of The R&A, President of the USGA, a former amateur participant and an amateur contestant from this year normally speak.

2024 Masters – Amateur Performances

22 year old NEAL SHIPLEY (USA) won the low amateur Silver Cup at The 88th Masters Invitational at Augusta National G.C.

His rounds of 71-76-80-71 and total score of 300 +12 saw him finish in tied 53rd place.

The 36-hole cut fell at 150 (+6) with 60 players progressing to the weekend. This was the first year that the cut has fallen at +5 or higher since 2017 highlighting how tough Augusta played on the opening two days.

There was a 2.5 hour weather delay on Day 1 of The Masters following overnight rain. As a result 27 of the 89 players in the field were required to complete their first rounds on Friday morning.

Neal SHIPLEY (USA), on +3, was the only amateur to make the cut with rounds of 71 and 76.
