The St. Andrews Trophy – 2022 Preview & Results

22nd July 2022

Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) won the 33rd St. Andrews Trophy match in Slovakia, beating Continent of Europe by 14.5-10.5.

GB&I have now won the St. Andrews Trophy 26 times with Continent of Europe having six outright wins to their name.

I would imagine that both sides are relatively pleased with the outcome. GB&I obviously because they won but Continent of Europe because they were competitive throughout despite fielding by no means their strongest potential team.

Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG), Mark POWER (IRL) and Calum SCOTT (SCO) were unbeaten for GB&I whilst Anton ALBERS (GER) was the best performer for the Continent of Europe.

Day 2 PM Singles

GB&I headed into the final series with an 11-5 advantage and therefore simply needed just two wins from the nine singles to regain the trophy.

Whilst they achieved this modest feat it was Continent of Europe who got the better of the Singles winning it 5.5-3.5.

Only Mark POWER (IRL), Calum SCOTT (SCO) and Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG) were able to deliver a full point for the visitors in the afternoon games.

Day 2 AM Foursomes

The GB&I team won the Day 2 Foursomes series 3-1 to put themselves firmly in the box seat in the St. Andrews Trophy match.

GB&I’s habit of winning or at least not losing close foursomes games, often on the 18th hole, has been a feature of the match and may ultimately prove to be the difference between the two sides.

GB&I captain Stuart Wilson re-jigged his order and introduced Archie DAVIES (WAL) to his line-up this morning. However, the Davies and John GOUGH (ENG) pairing was not successful with the Swedish pair of Adam WALLIN and David LUNDGREN taking the spoils in the opening game.

The Continent of Europe went with the same players but swapped their first and third pairs from Day 1 around.

GB&I won the other other three games with Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) and Matthew MCCLEAN (IRL) again winning their foursomes on the 18th green.

Captain Wilson will be pleased to see that the Mark POWER (IRL) & Barclay BROWN (ENG) and Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG) & Calum SCOTT (SCO) pairings came through unbeaten for him over the two days. Both tied their games yesterday but won today.

Day 1 PM Singles

GB&I won the afternoon Singles series 6-2 to take an overnight 8-4 lead over Continent of Europe into the final day.

There were wins for John GOUGH (ENG), Mark POWER (IRL), Barclay BROWN (ENG), Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) and Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG).

Archie DAVIES (WAL), who debuted for GB&I this afternoon in place of Matt MCCLEAN (IRL), tied his match as did CALUM SCOTT (SCO), who won the 18th to secure an important half-point for the visitors.

Martin COUVRA (FRA), who lost to John Gough in the opening game, came into the Continent of Europe’s line up with Laurenz SCHIERGEN (GER) stepping down.

Day 1 AM Foursomes

GB&I were a little fortunate to come out of the opening foursomes series with a 2-2 scoreline and no doubt will take heart from a good comeback.

The Continent of Europe looked on course for a comfortable overall victory, 3-1 at worse, across the four games for much of the round. GB&I unusually mixed the home nations up with no players from the same country paired together. Only the Bairstow and McClean pairing appeared to gel with the others all struggling for long periods.

However, Europe slipped up down the home stretch and a battling GB&I team were good enough to take advantage in the final three games, halving two and winning the final one.

David LUNDGREN (SWE), who replaced Kiet VAN DER WEELE (NED) on the eve of the match, was brought straight into the Continent of Europe’s starting line up.

Archie DAVIES (WAL) and Martin COUVRA (FRA) were left out of the opening Foursomes by the respective GB&I and Europe captains.

20th July 2022

The 33rd St. Andrews Trophy match will be contested on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd July at Penati Golf Resort in Slovakia.

This amateur men’s team match has been played biennially between Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) and the Continent of Europe since 1956.

It was originally established by The R&A to give more European players the chance to play at the highest level and GB&I players more team match play experience for the Walker Cup which is held in alternate years with this competition.

The St. Andrews Trophy was put forward for the match by the Royal and Ancient G.C. of St. Andrews in 1963.

I will be updating this article with daily reports and results once play commences.

2022 Teams

Each team has nine players.

The golfing calendar is extremely busy at this time of year and therefore player availability can be impacted by other opportunities. Recent history shows that this is a particular issue on the Continent of Europe’s side.

Continent of Europe

Yves HOFSTETTER (Switzerland) will be the Non-Playing Captain of the European team for the second match.

His team was announced by the European Golf Association (EGA) on 13th July and is listed below. Each player’s nationality, their current SPWAR and their regional position is also provided.

Anton ALBERS – Germany #88 (15th)

Pietro BOVARI – Italy #184 (44th)

Martin COUVRA – France #93 (20th)

Daniel DA COSTA RODRIGUES – Portugal #205 (49th)

David LUNDGREN* – Sweden #309 (72nd)

Luis MASAVEU RONCAL – Spain #122 (29th)

Laurenz SCHIERGEN – Germany #145 (34th)

Max STEINLECHNER – Austria #118 (28th)

Adam WALLIN – Sweden #247 (58th)

* David Lundgren replaced Kiet Van Der WEELE, Netherlands #92 (17th), on the eve of the match.

img_2352

Continent of Europe Team (Photo: European Golf Association)

It is disappointing that none of the team are in the SPWAR’s Continent of Europe top 10 and surprisingly  just four of the final team are in the current top 30. It is clear that the EGA are increasingly struggling to attract their very best players to the match.

The leading European players in the SPWAR, none of whom are playing, are Ludvig ABERG (Sweden) #1, Julien SALE (France) #14, Adrien Dumont De CHASSERT (Belgium) #18, Tom VAILLANT (France) #22, Jiri ZUSKA (Czech Republic) #27 , David PUIG (ESP) #30, Filipo CELLI (Italy) #37, Hamish BROWN (Denmark) #44, Jose BALLESTER (Spain) #60 and Hugo TOWNSEND (Sweden) #65.

Great Britain & Ireland Team

The R&A Selection Committee, including Non-Playing Captain Stuart WILSON (Scotland), announced their nine man team on 12th July. Each player’s nationality, their current SPWAR and their GB&I regional position is also provided.

Sam BAIRSTOW (24) – England #3 (1st)

Barclay BROWN (21) – England #54 (5th)

Archie DAVIES (21) – Wales #72 (7th)

John GOUGH (24) – England #13 (2nd)

Arron EDWARDS-HILL (23) – England #42 (3rd)

Matthew MCCLEAN (29) – Ireland #59 (6th)

Robert MORAN (23) – Ireland #52 (4th)

Mark POWER (22) – Ireland #193 (20th)

Calum SCOTT (19) – Scotland #74 (8th)

Non-Travelling Reserves
James ASHFIELD (21) – Wales #175 (19th) and Olly HUGGINS (24) – England #126 (15th)

img_2351

Great Britain & Ireland Team (Photo: European Golf Association)

Unlike the European Team above it is hard to argue with The R&A’s GB&I selection. Mark POWER is at face value a current ranking anomaly but he has a lot of goodwill on his side given previous Boys’ and Men’s GB&I team performances.

Match Format

The St. Andrews Trophy is played over two days and consists of a number of match play foursomes and singles games.

Thursday 21st July AM – Foursomes x 4
Thursday 21st July PM – Singles x 8
Friday 22nd July AM – Foursomes x 4
Friday 22nd July PM – Singles x 9

The additional Singles on Day 2 was first played in 2016.

With a maximum total of 25 points available and one point awarded for each match a team will be required to accumulate 13 points to secure an outright victory. As the holders Continent of Europe can retain the Trophy by reaching 12.5 points.

Venue – Penati Golf Club, Slovakia

Penati Golf Resort was opened in 2012 near the town of Senica in western Slovakia. It is now a 36-hole golf resort with a Legend Course and Heritage Course.

The Legend Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and built to USGA specifications, is the one being used this week. It cuts through forests of scots pines and silver birch.

Summary: Yards 7,151 / Par 72 / Course Rating 74 / Slope 145

The 15th, a par 6, is noteworthy as it has eleven different tees and can be stretched out to around 780 yards. The par 4 18th, shown above, plays to an island green situated in front of the clubhouse and is the course’s signature hole.

Penati has hosted a number of Championships in the recent past; the European Mid-Amateur (2013), D+D REAL Slovakia event on the Challenge Tour (2014-16), European Men’s Amateur (2015) and European Ladies Amateur (2018).

Weather Forecast

The weather forecast for Slovakia looks very good for both competition days, albeit the afternoon sun may prove problematic: –

Thur 21st July – Sunny. Wind 5mph E. Temp. Max. 39°C / Min 19°C.
Fri 22nd July – Sunny. Wind 10mph E. Temp. Max. 39°C / Min 20°C.

2020 Match – Royal Porthcawl, Wales

The 2020 St. Andrews Trophy match, scheduled to be played at Royal Porthcawl G.C. in South Wales, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Porthcawl will now host the next match on 25th and 26th May 2024.

2018 Match – Linna Golf, Finland

The Continent of Europe beat Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) 15.5 – 9.5 in the 32nd St. Andrews Trophy match played in 2018 at Linna Golf in Finland.

GB&I entered the final day leading 7 – 5 but were comprehensively outplayed by an inspired European team who won the Day 2 games 10.5 – 2.5. GB&I were thrashed 7.5 – 1.5 in the Singles.

This was just the sixth time Europe had won the match and the 6 point margin represented their biggest ever victory.

Looking at the individual performances Matias HONKALA (FIN) was the star man for Europe winning all four of his matches. Stefano MAZZOLI (ITA) didn’t play in the Day 1 Singles but won all three of the other matches he was selected for.

Matthew JORDAN (ENG) was comfortably GB&I’s star man winning three of his four games.

Past Results

To date GB&I have won the St. Andrews Trophy 25 times. However, their last outright win came in 2014.

Europe now have six wins to their name with three of them coming recently in 2010, 2012 and 2018.

2016 was the first time the match had been halved. This arguably represents another win for GB&I, who were the trophy holders, but I have excluded it from the above numbers.

Europe have won only once on GB&I soil in the history of the match, at Portmarnock GC in 2012.

The Jacques Léglise Trophy – 2019 Preview, Reports & Results

31st August 2019

Continent of Europe beat Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) 15.5 – 9.5 to win the 43rd Jacques Léglise Trophy at Aldeburgh G.C. in England.

They won three out of the four series with GB&I halving the opening foursomes.

It was Europe’s 13th win in the match which dates back to 1977. Interestingly nine of these have come away from home. GB&I have 29 wins with one match drawn.

Daniel DA COSTA RODRIGUES and Bård Bjørnevik SKOGEN were both unbeaten for the Continent of Europe. Loïc ETTLIN also won three of his four matches for the winning team.

Ben SCHMIDT, Joe PAGDIN and Joshua HILL provided some consolation for GB&I with their positive individual contributions. Connor MCKINNEY can also be pleased with his two wins.

Continent of Europe captain Joachim Fourquet said “I am very, very proud of my team. They showed that they are not just 16, 17 or 18 years old, they are real players – they know how to manage the course. The thing with the European team is you have 48 hours to create team spirit, it was better and better as the week went on. I could feel it last night, they were all talking and joking so I think today we are a real team, yesterday it was 75% and two days ago it was 50%. The attitude and team spirit was amazing today.”

GB&I captain Stuart Wilson said “There were a lot of positives. I think the guys changed their approach a little bit to put the challenge up to the European guys this afternoon but unfortunately they were just too strong for us. They keep the ball in play a little more than us and holed a few more putts and in the end that makes all the difference.”

GB&I will have to wait until 28-29 August 2020 to try and regain the trophy. The next Jacques Léglise Trophy match will be played at Blairgowrie G.C. in Scotland.

Day 2 Singles

The Continent of Europe won the Day 2 Singles 6 – 3.

After their strong performance in this morning’s Foursomes Continent of Europe needed only 3.5 points from this afternoon’s nine Singles to win the match. It didn’t take them long to achieve their goal.

Joe PAGDIN led GB&I out for the fourth time in the match. His opening hole birdie set the tone for a good afternoon for the Englishman who can be pleased with his two Singles wins. 3 Up at the turn Joe soon found himself back to 1 Up when Alvaro MUELLER-BAUMGART, who had been rested in the morning, hit back with two quick birdies on the back nine. The experienced Pagdin didn’t panic and his more consistent golf eventually saw him overcome the Spaniard 3&1.

fullsizeoutput_3b86

Ben SCHMIDT got off to a great start against Charles LARCELET and was 3 Up after 5 holes. However, the impressive Frenchman slowly reeled the Yorkshireman back in eventually birdieing the 17th to take a 2&1 win.

fullsizeoutput_3b87

Adam WALLIN overcame Connor MCKINNEY who fought to the end in a tight match.

fullsizeoutput_3b88

Archie DAVIES lost his way on the back nine handing Norway’s Bård Bjørnevik SKOGEN a relatively straight forward 4&2 win in the end.

fullsizeoutput_3b89

Playing captain Barclay BROWN redeemed himself with a 2&1 Singles win this afternoon after an uncharacteristic foursomes outing in the morning.

fullsizeoutput_3b8a

An out of sorts Aaron MARSHALL was saved from a heavier defeat by the relatively poor play of opponent David PUIG in a poor quality encounter.

fullsizeoutput_3b8c

Fellow Irishman Luke O’NEILL, who had been dropped from the morning foursomes by Captain Wilson, also struggled this afternoon gifting his game to Loïc ETTLIN with numerous errors evident.

fullsizeoutput_3b8b

Joshua HILL finished strongly to take advantage of a disappointing back nine from Frenchman Tom VAILLANT to win their game by 2 holes. Hill was unbeaten in his two Singles having drawn his first game yesterday afternoon.  An encouraging GB&I debut.

fullsizeoutput_3b90

Tom MCKIBBIN played much better this afternoon but was still unable to secure his first point of the match losing 2&1 to Daniel DA COSTA RODRIGUES who proved to be one of the stars of the European team.

Day 2 Foursomes

Continent of Europe won the Day 2 Foursomes series 3 – 1 and will now take a 9.5 – 6.5 lead into the final Singles series this afternoon.

Play started at 8.30am with GB&I led off by Ben SCHMIDT and Archie DAVIES in the morning Foursomes. On the front nine holes were exchanged freely with pars normally good enough to secure a win. After allowing the French pair to draw level on the 10th Schmidt and Davies powered in front with three quick birdies, seeing out the game 4&3.

fullsizeoutput_3b81

Barclay BROWN and Joe PAGDIN were unfortunately unable to put up much resistance in a game GB&I would have been hoping to take against Adam WALLIN and Loïc ETTLIN.

fullsizeoutput_3b82

Connor MCKINNEY and Aaron MARSHALL were unable to deliver a second foursomes win but Europe’s Bård Bjørnevik SKOGEN and Matteo CRISTONI were clearly in sparkling form. Seven birdies is always going to take some stopping in foursomes.

fullsizeoutput_3b83

In a tight game the Irish pairing of Tom MCKIBBIN and Joshua HILL lost out to the Iberian pairing of Daniel DA COSTA RODRIGUES and David PUIG. I think it is fair to say McKibbin does not like the closing holes at Aldeburgh.

Day 1 Singles

The eight afternoon singles started at 1.30pm with Europe taking the series honours 4.5 – 3.5.

Continent of Europe therefore lead GB&I 6.5 – 5.5 at the end of Day 1 of the 43rd Jacques Léglise Trophy match.

Joshua HILL came in to the GB&I Singles line up in place of Aaron MARSHALL whilst Matteo CHRISTONI replaced Bård Bjørnevik SKOGEN for the Europeans as both Captains ensured all nine of their players saw action on Day 1.

Captain Wilson led off with his strongest match player Joe PAGDIN. Whilst not at his best on a windy afternoon in Suffolk the Florida-based Englishman still had an enough to see off Spain’s David PUIG. Match play is all about finding a way to win.

fullsizeoutput_3b5b

Connor MCKINNEY was sent out second and soon found himself 3 Down after five holes to Charles LARCELET who had been part of the outstanding French foursomes pairing earlier in the day. Then somewhat inexplicably Larcelet proceeded to collapse losing six of the next seven holes, with only one being to a birdie from the young Scotsman. Connor saw out the game with little trouble.

fullsizeoutput_3b5d

Joshua HILL will be a little disappointed with his finish but can be pleased with a half against Spaniard Alvaro MUELLER-BAUMGART on his GB&I debut.

fullsizeoutput_3b62

Ben SCHMIDT played the best of all of the GB&I players this afternoon. Never falling behind his consistent play helped him see off the more experienced Adam WALLIN.

fullsizeoutput_3b5e

At this point in proceedings everything appeared to be going nicely for GB&I. Unfortunately the tide started to turn as the remaining games came down the closing holes.

Matteo CRISTONI got the better of Archie DAVIES in a tight match thanks primarily to two birdies on the back nine.

fullsizeoutput_3b60

Tom MCKIBBIN sadly let his match get away from him on Aldeburgh’s back nine. Two pars on the final two holes ended up being good enough for Loïc ETTLIN to completely turn around what looked to be a certain point for GB&I for much of the afternoon.

fullsizeoutput_3b61.jpeg

Having taken a 1 Up lead into the back nine Luke O’NEILL was unable to stop Tom VAILLANT from securing his second win of the day on a topsy turvy back nine.

fullsizeoutput_3b5f

Daniel DA COSTA RODRIGUES was given the initiative early on in his match against Barclay BROWN and comfortably saw out the game with a string of pars. The Portuguese player was one of just four players, two on each side, to end the day with a 100% win record.

fullsizeoutput_3b5c

Day 1 Foursomes

The Day 1 morning Foursomes started at 9.00am and were shared 2 – 2 by GB&I and Continent of Europe.

GB&I’s opening pair of Barclay BROWN and Joe PAGDIN got off to a poor start falling 4-Down after 4 holes and simply never recovered against their French opponents, who were holing putts from everywhere.

Connor MCKINNEY and Aaron MARSHALL faired much better. This new foursomes pairing took the lead and built on it nicely until the match had been won on the 14th green.

The final two games were much tighter affairs both being decided in the final holes. Ben SCHMIDT and Archie DAVIES won the 18th after a superb approach by the Welshman to 4 feet was converted by his partner. However, Tom MCKIBBIN and Luke O’NEILL lost both the 16th and 17th holes to allow the Europeans a late win.

Venue

The match will be played on Aldeburgh’s Championship Course. This heathland layout beside the River Alde measures 6,603 yards and, with no par 5’s, plays to a demanding par of 68.

Aldeburgh G.C. was founded in 1884 and is therefore one of the oldest clubs and courses in the world.

It’s original course was laid out by Scottish professionals John Thomson and Willie Fernie. Subsequent changes were made by Willie Park Jnr. and J.H. Taylor in 1907 and finally by Harry Colt and Hugh Alison in 1922.

The 2018 Jacques Léglise Trophy Match

GB&I won the 2018 Jacques Léglise Trophy match against Continent of Europe 15.5 – 9.5.

GB&I won three of the four series and halved the other in what was a comprehensive victory.

It was GB&I’s first outright win since 2014 at Barsebäck in Sweden, albeit the 2015 match at Royal Dornoch in Scotland did finish in a 12.5 – 12.5 tie.

img_6028

The Great Britain and Ireland Team With The Jacques Léglise Trophy

Conor GOUGH, Robin WILLIAMS and Barclay BROWN were the star men for GB&I last year. Gough and Williams won both of their singles and halved their two foursomes games where they played together. Brown won his two singles and one foursomes match.

Previous Matches

This junior match was first played in 1958 but only became the Jacques Léglise Trophy in 1977 when Jean-Louis Dupont donated a trophy in memory of Jacques Léglise, a former President of both the French Golf Association and the European Golf Association. Leglise was also a past French amateur champion and national team captain.

GB&I won all of the original 9 matches played between 1958 and 1966. Since becoming the Jacques Léglise GB&I have won 29 of the matches with the Continent of Europe claiming 12 victories with one match tied.

Originally played in a single day the match moved to two in 1996.

The Jacques Léglise Trophy – 2018 Preview, Reports & Results

Afternoon

Pleasingly GB&I sprinted through the finishing line winning the Day 2 Singles 6 -3 against Continent of Europe.

There were wins for Conor GOUGH, Barclay BROWN, Robin WILLIAMS, Max HOPKINS and Joe PAGDIN. Mark POWER and Tom MCKIBBIN halved their games.

The Day 2 Singles Results (Photo: European Golf Association / Golfbox)

Morning

GB&I led Continent of Europe 7.5 – 4.5 after Day 1 but with 13 points to play for today the match was far from over.

However, by halving the Day 2 Foursomes 2 – 2 GB&I took a giant step to securing victory.

Proceedings didn’t start well for GB&I with Barclay BROWN and Joe PAGDIN losing their first ever Foursomes game. Daniel Da COSTA RODRIGUES and Saku TUUSA didn’t have to do a great deal to win as the two Englishman simply never got going.

Conor GOUGH and Robin WILLIAMS, 2Up with 3 holes to play, appeared to have a win in the bag but a bogey on 16 and two birdies on the finishing holes by their opponents, Adam WALLIN and Loïc ETTLIN, meant in the end they did well to secure a half.

Like Brown and Pagdin the Dutch pair of Kiet VAN DER WEELE and Jerry JI found the going tough this morning. Mark POWER and Max HOPKINS exacting revenge for their defeat to the same pair yesterday without having to overly exert themselves.

The final game of the series between Archie DAVIES and Connor MCKINNEY and Spain’s Eduard Rousaud SABATE and David PUIG ended in a half. Looking at the scores neither pair’s played particularly well with both cards showing plenty of bogeys and as such a half seems a fair result from afar.

GB&I will take a 3-point lead into Day 2 of the Jaques Léglise Trophy match.

There were wins for Mark POWER, Robin WILLIAMS, Connor MCKINNEY, Conor GOUGH and Barclay BROWN.

Morning

GB&I won the Day 1 Foursomes series 2.5 – 1.5.

There were wins for the ‘unbeatable’ partnership of Barclay BROWN and Joe PAGDIN as well as new pairing Tom MCKIBBIN and Archie DAVIES.

The Sheffield-born pair enhanced their foursomes record, which now reads P4 W4, by overcoming Loïc ETTLIN and Adam WALLIN 4&3 in the opening game.

The session looked like it may finish even better for GB&I but in the end McKibbin and Davies were the only other pairing to get over the line. Robin WILLIAMS and Conor GOUGH bravely birdied the last to secure a half having lost control of their game on the back nine.

Venue

Finland’s No. 1 rated course is hosting this year’s Jacques Léglise Trophy match.

The South East Course at the Kytäjä Golf resort is located on the outskirts of Hyvinkää, about 20 miles north of Helsinki.

It was designed by Canadian architect Thomas McBroom and opened in 2003.

The course is set on undulating land and whilst by no means tight there are tall pine trees and water hazards in play on many holes. It measures 6,965 yards and plays to a par of 71.

Originally played in a single day it moved to two in 1996.

Last year the Continent of Europe beat GB&I 15.5 – 9.5 at Ballybunion in Ireland.
