South Beach International Amateur – 2022 Preview & Results

Thursday 22nd December 2022

Luke CLANTON (USA) beat Henry GUAN (USA) on the first sudden death play-off hole, the par 5 15th, with a par after 14 year old Guan found the water that borders the right side of the fairway.

Both players had finished on 266 (-17) in regulation play. This was after a dramatic conclusion to the 72nd hole at Miami Beach G.C. where Clanton holed a 15 footer for par before Guan birdied from 8 feet to take us into extra time.

Clanton produced a great final round 66 (-5) which included six birdies to force the play off with Guan who had started the day with a 3-shot lead. 14 year old Guan should be proud of his performance and his 69 was hugely impressive given the pressure he would have been feeling.

Clanton, who is a freshman at Florida State University, added the South Beach International Amateur title to the Azalea Invitational and North and South Amateur wins he had already earned earlier this year.

The final scoreboard was understandably dominated by players from the USA.

Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG) was the leading GB&I player; a 67 on the final day lifting him to tied 10th on -9.

Luke POULTER (ENG) backed up his win in last week’s Willow Cup by finishing tied 14th on -8. This was a real break-out performance for him in a high class field.

Gregor TAIT (SCO) -4 finished a creditable tied 33rd after a final round 68 with Archie DAVIES (WAL) and Alex MAGUIRE (IRL) -3 41st our only other players to complete the tournament with under par scores.

The average score in the final round was 71.58 (+0.58). With the course dried out there were no preferred lies in the fourth round.

Wednesday 21st December 2022

86 players made the cut and following heavy overnight rain benefitted from ‘lift, clean and place’ rules for the third round.

Young Henry GUAN (USA) from Texas showed few signs of nerves as he produced a 4-under 67 to extend his lead to three shots in the South Beach International. Seven birdies were partially erased by a bogey on the 6th and a double on the par 5 10th.

Luke CLANTON (USA), the reigning North & South Amateur champion, -12 moved up to 2nd place with a 65 whilst George DUANGAMANEE (USA) and Deven PATEL (USA) -11, in tied 3rd, remain in striking distance.

Luke POULTER (ENG) and Nels SURTANI (USA) produced the best two rounds of the day with superb 7-under 64’s.

The average score from the reduced field in Round 3 was 70.17 (-0.83) with 44 of the 86 players breaking par.

Luke POULTER (ENG) stole the GB&I headlines with his blemish free 64 (-7) lifting him 35 places to tied 9th.

Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG), now up to tied 33rd, continued his comeback from a lacklustre opening round with a 67 in the third round.

Alex MAGUIRE (IRL) was the only other home player to produce an under par round on Wednesday. His 70 leaves him in tied 39th.

Tuesday 20th December 2022

Henry GUAN (USA) posted a second consecutive 65, this time at Normandy Shores, to move into the lead on -11. Guan, who like yesterday’s co-leader Oscar COUILLEAU (FRA), is only 14 years old was bogey free and as you can see below has only one blemish on his two cards after 36 holes.

Guan is one shot better off than John M. BUTLER (USA) who recorded a 67 at Miami Beach whilst the other co-overnight leader George DUANGAMANEE (USA) finished the second day in 3rd on -9.

Jack HEARN (IRL) leads the GB&I group of 16 players on -4.

Archie DAVIES (WAL) -3, Alex MAGUIRE (IRL) -3, Gregor TAIT (SCO) -3, Luke POULTER (ENG) -2, Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG) -1 and Joe PAGDIN (ENG) -1 were also amongst the 86 players who made the top 72 and ties 36 hole cut. This was the second highest number of players to make the cut in SBIA history.

Nine GB&I players missed the cut. Most upset will be James CLARIDGE (ENG), who having gone out in 33 (-2) at Normandy Shores to sit nicely in the top 20, came home in 40 (+5) to miss out by 1-shot on +1.

The average score at Miami Beach on Day 2 was 72.60 (+1.60 over par) whilst it was slightly lower at Normandy Shores 71.39 (+1.39 over par). The windier conditions led to lower number of under par rounds – 61 v. 82 yesterday.

Monday 19th December 2022

Oscar COUILLEAU (FRA), who is just 14 years old, and George DUANGAMANEE (USA) both recorded opening 64’s (-7) at Miami Beach to take the early lead in the South Beach International Amateur.

John BUTLER (USA) recorded the lowest Round 1 score at Normandy Shores. His 64 (-6) left him tied 3rd and was one better than Ryan DUPUY (USA) and Cameron TANKERSLEY (USA) who are tied 5th.

82 players from the field of 210 posted under par scores in Round 1. The average score at Miami Beach was 71.50 (+0.50 over par) whilst it was slightly higher at Normandy Shores 71.10 (+1.10 over par).

Joe PAGDIN (ENG) and Gregor TAIT (SCO), tied 10th, are the leading GB&I players on -4. Joe shot a 67 at Miami Beach whilst Gregor took 66 at Normandy Shores.

Frank KENNEDY (ENG) and Oliver MUKHERJEE (SCO) -3 were just a shot further back with an encouraging overall total of 11 out of our 16 players under par after their first 18 holes.

The 12th South Beach International Amateur (SBIA) will be played between 19th-22nd December 2022 in Miami Beach, Florida (GMT -5 hours).

First played in 2011 the SBIA has quickly become one of the world’s leading amateur golf competitions. The SPWAR continues to rate it as having the 5th best field on the world amateur calendar.

Format

The SBIA is a 72 hole stroke play competition played over four days.

18 holes are played at both Miami Beach G.C. and the nearby Normandy Shores G.C. by the full field over the first two days.

After a top 72 and ties cut the final 36 holes are played exclusively at Miami Beach over the remaining two days.

Players

210 players have paid the $420 entry fee and will contest the 2022 SBIA.

16 golfers from Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) are in this year’s starting field, a number of whom are studying at U.S. colleges. There was 17 last year with the highest entry being 19 in 2018.

Given 2023 is a Walker Cup year a top 10 finish in an event of this magnitude would be a real selection fillip for any of our players.

Courses

Both courses were designed by Arthur Hills and play to around 6,800 yards.

They are typical Florida layouts with numerous lakes coming into play throughout the 18 holes. As a result scores can be high if the wind blows – which it frequently does here.

Normandy Shores plays to a par of 70 and Miami Beach a par of 71 during the tournament.

2021 South Beach International Amateur

Finigan TILLY (USA), who was born in London but is now based in California, completed a surprise wire-to-wire victory at the 11th South Beach International Amateur (SBIA). Tilly started the week ranked #318 in the SPWAR. His 268 (-15) total was one shot off Cole Hammer’s 2020 scoring record.

Clay AMLUNG (USA) -13 finished 2nd and Jose BALLESTER (ESP) -12, after closing with two bogeys, 3rd.

English left hander Sam BAIRSTOW finished 4th on -9 after a joint best final round of 67.

Callan BARROW (ENG), John GOUGH (ENG) and Jake HIBBERT (ENG) -5 also finished in the top 20.

Of the other GB&I players who made the cut Callum BRUCE (SCO) -2 finished tied 36th, Josef HACKER (ENG) +2 tied 59th and Frank KENNEDY (ENG) +4 tied 69th.

World Amateur Team Championship – 2022 Preview & Results

ITALY won the 32nd World Amateur Team Championship (WATC), for the Eisenhower Trophy, in France. 2022 was the first time that Italy had won a medal, let alone gold, at the WATC.

Round 4

The leading teams, which included ENGLAND, IRELAND, SCOTLAND and WALES, all played their final rounds at Le Golf National.

ITALY produced a 9-under par final round to move past overnight leaders SWEDEN who could only post a 7-under score. Marco FLORIOLI (-6) and Pietro BOVARI (-3) contributed the two scores that took Italy to the title. European Amateur champion Filippo CELLI, the third member of the Italian team, shot a non-counting 70 in Round 4. ITALY finished on an impressive 541 -31 total with the Swede’s, whose Women’s team won their WATC last week, missing out on a rare double by 1-shot.

USA finished 3rd on -27, NORWAY -25 4th and SPAIN -23 5th.

Early Championship leaders JAPAN perhaps deserved more than their 7th place finish but they paid the price for a flattering finish.

WALES (-17), tied 8th, will be delighted to finish in the top 10 and as the leading home nation team. It was the Principality’s best result at the WATC since they came in fourth in 2006 with a team that consisted of Nigel Edwards, Rhys Davies and Llewellyn Matthews.

ENGLAND (-14) 14th, IRELAND (-8) tied 19th and SCOTLAND (+2) 33rd all finished lower than they would have hoped when they arrived in Paris at the beginning of the week.

Tobias JONSSON (SWE) shot a final round 66 at Le Golf National to secure Low Individual honours with a 269 -17 total.

Taga SEMIKAWA (JAP), who had led from the opening day and started Round 4 with a 5-shot lead, sadly collapsed to a disappointing 73 to finish second on -16.

Austin GREASER (USA) completed a consistent championship with a 67 to finish 3rd on 271 -15.

Archie DAVIES (WAL) had the best Individual score by a home nation player, finishing tied 9th with a 274 -12 result.

Looking at the our ther leading home nation players Mark POWER (IRL) & Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) -6 finished tied 25th, John GOUGH (ENG) -4 tied 31st, James ASHFIELD (WAL) -2 tied 40th and Calum SCOTT (SCO) & Luke HARRIES (WAL) Ev tied 46th.

Round 3

The leading teams all played their third rounds at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche.

SWEDEN matched JAPAN‘s opening day 130 -14 salvo at Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche to snatch the 54-hole lead at the World Amateur Team Championship, finishing on 407 -23.

The Swede’s now have a narrow one shot lead over ITALY, JAPAN and USA heading into the final day. FRANCE -21, SPAIN -19 and NORWAY -18 are also still well in the fight for the Eisenhower Trophy.

WALES (-15) continued their strong performance to stay in the top ten. ENGLAND (-9) are 16th, IRELAND (+1) tied 27th and SCOTLAND (Ev) tied 30th.

Taga SEMIKAWA (JAP) 197 -18 will take a 5-shot lead over Filippo CELLI (ITA) into the final round after they recorded 69 and 70 respectively at Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche on Day 3.

Tobias JONSSON (SWE) produced the day’s low round with a 64 (-8) which included an eagle and eight birdies. Teammate Ludvig ABERG (SWE) also contributed a 66 (-6) to drive the Swede’s to the top of the leaderboard.

Looking at the other leading home nation players Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) -5 finished Round 3 tied 33rd, Mark POWER (IRL) -2 tied 36th, Calum SCOTT (SCO) & Luke HARRIES (WAL) -1 tied 45th and James ASHFIELD (WAL) & John GOUGH (ENG) Ev tied 52nd.

Round 2

JAPAN continued to enjoy their trip to France posting a strong round at Le Golf National on Day 2 of the Eisenhower Trophy. Their 264 (-22) 36-hole score sees them take a 5-shot lead into the third round.

ITALY moved up to 2nd place after an impressive 134 -10 score at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche.

FRANCE -16, USA -15 and NORWAY & SPAIN -13 are the countries battling to stay in touch with the leaders.

WALES (-10), tied 7th, jumped to the top of the home nation rankings after posting an excellent 137 -7 score at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche.

It was a disappointing over par day for the remainder of our teams. ENGLAND (-5), who were playing at Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche today, are now tied 17th, IRELAND (+1) tied 29th and SCOTLAND (+4) tied 35th. The Irish and Scots were at Le Golf National for their second rounds.

27 of the 71 teams finished Day 2 under par.

Taiga SEMIKAWA (JAP) 128 -15 extended his lead in the individual standings to 4-shots after a 65 -6 at Le Golf National.

European Amateur champion Filippo CELLI (ITA) 132 -11 moved into a tie for 2nd place with a 65 (-7) at Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche, finishing his round eagle-birdie.

David PUIG (ESP) also remains in 2nd place after a 66 (-5) at Le Golf National.

Tom VAILLANT (FRA) and Archie DAVIES (WAL) 134 -9 are tied 4th after recording a 65 and 69 respectively at Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche.

Adrien DUMONT DE CHASSART (BEL) produced the round of the day, a 63 at Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche, matching Semikawa’s effort in Round 1

Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) and John GOUGH (ENG) 141 -2 are tied 30th and Mark POWER (IRL), Luke HARRIES (WAL) and Calum SCOTT (SCO) 141 -1 are tied 42nd with 36-holes still to play.

Round 1

JAPAN made a sparkling start to the 2022 Eisenhower Trophy with a barely believable 130 (-14) score around Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche’s Red Course. It was the second lowest opening round in the WATC since USA’s 128 in Japan in 2014.

SPAIN are second after recording a 136 (-8) score at the same venue.

AUSTRIA, FRANCE, GERMANY, ITALY, SWEDEN and SWITZERLAND 135 (-7) are all tied 3rd. France, Germany and Italy all started their Championship’s at Le Golf National and therefore led the scoring at this venue on Day 1.

ENGLAND (-6) are tied 9th and WALES (-3) tied 14th, after both played their opening rounds at Le Golf National. IRELAND and SCOTLAND (both -2) are tied 20th after starting out at nearby Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche.

The ideal playing conditions enabled 26 of the 71 teams to finish Day 1 under par.

Taiga SEMIKAWA (JAP) 63 -9 leads Jonas BAUMGARTNER (GER) 65 -6, Archie DAVIES (WAL) 65 -6, David PUIG (ESP) 66 -6 and Cedric GUGLER (SUI) 66 -6 in the Individual standings. Semikawa’s score was the joint lowest in the history of the WATC.

With Kohei OKADA (JAP) 67 -5, tied 6th, also posting a strong score it is no wonder Japan are leading the way by 6-shots.

Mark POWER (IRL) 69 -3, Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) and John GOUGH (ENG), both 68 -3, all tied 12th, were the best of the home nation players in Round 1. Scotland’s Calum SCOTT 70 -2 was one shot further back in tied 28th.

The 32nd Men’s World Amateur Team Championship (WATC), played for the Eisenhower Trophy, starts on Wednesday 31st August in Paris, France.

The WATC is a biennial international amateur golf competition run by the International Golf Federation (IGF), formerly known as the World Amateur Golf Council.

The IGF comprises 151 national governing bodies of golf in 146 countries and 22 international professional tours. It is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as the body responsible for golf and as such, in addition to the Men’s and Women’s WATC’s it also organises the golf competitions in both the Olympics and Youth Olympics.

The competition has in recent years moved by rotation around the world taking in Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe-Africa in turn. It will be played in the Middle East for the first time in 2023.

The first WATC took place in 1958 and was played over the Old Course at St. Andrews. Bobby Jones captained the United States of America famously receiving the Freedom of the Town during the trip, although his team ended up losing a play-off to Australia for the title.

The competition was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was therefore last played at Carton House, Ireland in September 2018.

Venue

The WATC will be played on the Albatross Course at Le Golf National and on the Red Course at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Brèteche.

La Golf National is well known having staged the 2018 Ryder Cup and numerous French Open Championships since 1991.

The course, which is man made with undulating fairways, fast greens and numerous water hazards, will play to 6,991 yards and a par of 71. It enjoys a slope of 155.

Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche is an exclusive golf club which sits in rolling countryside in La Tuilerie and enjoys an 18th century manor house for a clubhouse.

The Club has hosted the Canada Cup in 1963, the French Open Championship twice and the prestigious Tophée Lancôme for 34 years on the European Tour.

The Red Course will play to 6,821 yards and a par of 72 during the Championship. It has a slope of 142.

Competition Format

71 teams are competing in the 2022 WATC.

The three players from each team play 72 holes of stroke play over four days. The two lowest rounds recorded on each day count towards the team’s total score.

The leading 36 teams after 36 holes will play their third round at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche and their final round at Le Golf National. The other teams will do the reverse.

The winning team receive the Eisenhower Trophy. The Trophy was provided in 1958 by the American Friends of Golf through the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient GolfGolf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. It is named in honour of the then United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The inscription on the trophy reads: “To foster friendship and sportsmanship among the Peoples of the World.”

Players in the leading three teams receive gold, silver and bronze medals.

Whilst individual results are reported and the player with the lowest score is recognised at the closing ceremony there is no prize awarded for the honour.

2023 will be the first time the event has been staged in the Middle East and will see it move to odd years to avoid a clash with the Summer Olympic Games.

Due to the escalating costs of staging the WATC it will in all future years be played at a single course with the field reduced to a minimum of 36 teams.

It is expected a new qualifying competition for the smaller and newer golfing nations will be established ahead of this Championship.

2018 WATC

DENMARK won the Men’s World Amateur Team Championship at Carton House in Ireland with a record 541 (-39) team score. The Danish team was made up of John Axelsen, Nicolai Hojgaard and Rasmus Hojgaard. This was Denmark’s first victory in the Championship. Their previous best result was second place in Argentina in 2010.

The UNITED STATES finished 2nd paying the penalty for a poor first day. In the final analysis they found themselves coming up 1-shot short on 542 (-38).

SPAIN were third on 544 (-36) two shots further back.

ENGLAND were the best of the home nations finishing 8th on 549 (-31).

IRELAND finished tied 10th on 553 (-27), SCOTLAND tied 12th on 554 (-26) and WALES tied 18th on 560 (-20).

Spain’s Alejandro DEL RAY was the low individual with a superb -23 final score, beating Japan’s Takumi KANAYA by 1-shot.

Robin DAWSON and Gian-Marco PETROZZI (-14) both finished tied 13th to share low GB&I honours. Matthew JORDAN, Sandy SCOTT and Ryan LUMSDEN (-12) were a couple of shots further back.

2016 WATC

AUSTRALIA won the 2016 World Amateur Team Championship in Mayakoba, Mexico by a massive 19-shots. The team of Cameron DAVIS, Harrison ENDYCOTT and Curtis LUCK equalled the 72 hole scoring record of 534 (-38). It was the fourth time Australia had won the Eisenhower Trophy, following victories in 1958, 1966 and 1996.

Australia’ Cameron DAVIS (269 / -17) recorded the Championship’s lowest individual score. His compatriot Curtis LUCK (271 / -15) finished second, helped in no small part by a superb 63 (-9) in the third round.

2014 WATC

The United States of America, represented by Bryson DECHAMBEAU, Beau HOSSLER and Denny MCCARTHY won the 2014 Eisenhower Trophy in Karuizawa, Japan. The U.S. team set a new record score of 534 (-38).

In 2014 Spain’s Jon RAHM won the Individual with a record breaking 263 (-23) total.

Historic Results

GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND (GB&I) have won the Eisenhower Trophy four times but only SCOTLAND have won it in their own right since each of the home nations started to compete separately.

The competion holds a special place in the story of English amateur Peter MCEVOY. He participated in the winning GB&I team in 1988, he also ‘won’ the Individual (284) that year and he went on to captain the GB&I team that won it again in 1998. A hat trick of Eisenhower Trophy achievements that may prove difficult for anyone else to match.

Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) won the 33rd St. Andrews Trophy match in Slovakia, beating Continent of Europe by 14.5-10.5.

GB&I have now won the St. Andrews Trophy 26 times with Continent of Europe having six outright wins to their name.

I would imagine that both sides are relatively pleased with the outcome. GB&I obviously because they won but Continent of Europe because they were competitive throughout despite fielding by no means their strongest potential team.

Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG), Mark POWER (IRL) and Calum SCOTT (SCO) were unbeaten for GB&I whilst Anton ALBERS (GER) was the best performer for the Continent of Europe.

Day 2 PM Singles

GB&I headed into the final series with an 11-5 advantage and therefore simply needed just two wins from the nine singles to regain the trophy.

Whilst they achieved this modest feat it was Continent of Europe who got the better of the Singles winning it 5.5-3.5.

Only Mark POWER (IRL), Calum SCOTT (SCO) and Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG) were able to deliver a full point for the visitors in the afternoon games.

Day 2 AM Foursomes

The GB&I team won the Day 2 Foursomes series 3-1 to put themselves firmly in the box seat in the St. Andrews Trophy match.

GB&I’s habit of winning or at least not losing close foursomes games, often on the 18th hole, has been a feature of the match and may ultimately prove to be the difference between the two sides.

GB&I captain Stuart Wilson re-jigged his order and introduced Archie DAVIES (WAL) to his line-up this morning. However, the Davies and John GOUGH (ENG) pairing was not successful with the Swedish pair of Adam WALLIN and David LUNDGREN taking the spoils in the opening game.

The Continent of Europe went with the same players but swapped their first and third pairs from Day 1 around.

GB&I won the other other three games with Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) and Matthew MCCLEAN (IRL) again winning their foursomes on the 18th green.

Captain Wilson will be pleased to see that the Mark POWER (IRL) & Barclay BROWN (ENG) and Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG) & Calum SCOTT (SCO) pairings came through unbeaten for him over the two days. Both tied their games yesterday but won today.

Day 1 PM Singles

GB&I won the afternoon Singles series 6-2 to take an overnight 8-4 lead over Continent of Europe into the final day.

There were wins for John GOUGH (ENG), Mark POWER (IRL), Barclay BROWN (ENG), Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) and Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG).

Archie DAVIES (WAL), who debuted for GB&I this afternoon in place of Matt MCCLEAN (IRL), tied his match as did CALUM SCOTT (SCO), who won the 18th to secure an important half-point for the visitors.

Martin COUVRA (FRA), who lost to John Gough in the opening game, came into the Continent of Europe’s line up with Laurenz SCHIERGEN (GER) stepping down.

Day 1 AM Foursomes

GB&I were a little fortunate to come out of the opening foursomes series with a 2-2 scoreline and no doubt will take heart from a good comeback.

The Continent of Europe looked on course for a comfortable overall victory, 3-1 at worse, across the four games for much of the round. GB&I unusually mixed the home nations up with no players from the same country paired together. Only the Bairstow and McClean pairing appeared to gel with the others all struggling for long periods.

However, Europe slipped up down the home stretch and a battling GB&I team were good enough to take advantage in the final three games, halving two and winning the final one.

David LUNDGREN (SWE), who replaced Kiet VAN DER WEELE (NED) on the eve of the match, was brought straight into the Continent of Europe’s starting line up.

Archie DAVIES (WAL) and Martin COUVRA (FRA) were left out of the opening Foursomes by the respective GB&I and Europe captains.

The 33rd St. Andrews Trophy match will be contested on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd July at Penati Golf Resort in Slovakia.

This amateur men’s team match has been played biennially between Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) and the Continent of Europe since 1956.

It was originally established by The R&A to give more European players the chance to play at the highest level and GB&I players more team match play experience for the Walker Cup which is held in alternate years with this competition.

The St. Andrews Trophy was put forward for the match by the Royal and Ancient G.C. of St. Andrews in 1963.

I will be updating this article with daily reports and results once play commences.

2022 Teams

Each team has nine players.

The golfing calendar is extremely busy at this time of year and therefore player availability can be impacted by other opportunities. Recent history shows that this is a particular issue on the Continent of Europe’s side.

It is disappointing that none of the team are in the SPWAR’s Continent of Europe top 10 and surprisingly just four of the final team are in the current top 30. It is clear that the EGA are increasingly struggling to attract their very best players to the match.

Unlike the European Team above it is hard to argue with The R&A’s GB&I selection. Mark POWER is at face value a current ranking anomaly but he has a lot of goodwill on his side given previous Boys’ and Men’s GB&I team performances.

Match Format

The St. Andrews Trophy is played over two days and consists of a number of match play foursomes and singles games.

The additional Singles on Day 2 was first played in 2016.

With a maximum total of 25 points available and one point awarded for each match a team will be required to accumulate 13 points to secure an outright victory. As the holders Continent of Europe can retain the Trophy by reaching 12.5 points.

Venue – Penati Golf Club, Slovakia

Penati Golf Resort was opened in 2012 near the town of Senica in western Slovakia. It is now a 36-hole golf resort with a Legend Course and Heritage Course.

The Legend Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and built to USGA specifications, is the one being used this week. It cuts through forests of scots pines and silver birch.

Summary: Yards 7,151 / Par 72 / Course Rating 74 / Slope 145

The 15th, a par 6, is noteworthy as it has eleven different tees and can be stretched out to around 780 yards. The par 4 18th, shown above, plays to an island green situated in front of the clubhouse and is the course’s signature hole.

Penati has hosted a number of Championships in the recent past; the European Mid-Amateur (2013), D+D REAL Slovakia event on the Challenge Tour (2014-16), European Men’s Amateur (2015) and European Ladies Amateur (2018).

2020 Match – Royal Porthcawl, Wales

The 2020 St. Andrews Trophy match, scheduled to be played at Royal Porthcawl G.C. in South Wales, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Porthcawl will now host the next match on 25th and 26th May 2024.

2018 Match – Linna Golf, Finland

The Continent of Europe beat Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) 15.5 – 9.5 in the 32nd St. Andrews Trophy match played in 2018 at Linna Golf in Finland.

GB&I entered the final day leading 7 – 5 but were comprehensively outplayed by an inspired European team who won the Day 2 games 10.5 – 2.5. GB&I were thrashed 7.5 – 1.5 in the Singles.

This was just the sixth time Europe had won the match and the 6 point margin represented their biggest ever victory.

Looking at the individual performances Matias HONKALA (FIN) was the star man for Europe winning all four of his matches. Stefano MAZZOLI (ITA) didn’t play in the Day 1 Singles but won all three of the other matches he was selected for.

Matthew JORDAN (ENG) was comfortably GB&I’s star man winning three of his four games.

Past Results

To date GB&I have won the St. Andrews Trophy 25 times. However, their last outright win came in 2014.

Europe now have six wins to their name with three of them coming recently in 2010, 2012 and 2018.

2016 was the first time the match had been halved. This arguably represents another win for GB&I, who were the trophy holders, but I have excluded it from the above numbers.

Europe have won only once on GB&I soil in the history of the match, at Portmarnock GC in 2012.

The European Amateur Championship – 2022 Preview & Results

Filippo CELLI (ITA) won the 2022 European Amateur Championship at El Saler Golf Club after rounds of 64, 74, 73 and 69.

Celli is from Rome and is a rising junior at Texas Christian University in USA.

The 2023 European Amateur Championship will be played at Pärnu Bay Golf Links in Estonia.

Round 4

A final round 69 gave Filippo Celli a 280 (-8) total and a one shot victory. Celli started nervously with a bogey 5 on his opening hole but recovered his poise quickly with four birdies following on his front nine. An even par back nine saw him safely home albeit a bogey 5 on the par 4 16th made things interesting down the stretch.

He is the fourth Italian winner of this prestigious trophy following in the footsteps of Massimo Scarpa (1992), Stafano Mazzoli (2015) and Luca Cianchetti (2016).

The victory also provides Celli with an exemption into the 150th Open Championship being played at St. Andrews in a few weeks time.

Rasmus NEERGAARD-PETERSEN (DEN) produced one of three 67’s on the final day to take 2nd place on 281 (-7). Whilst he too bogeyed the first he followed it was six unblemished birdies in what was a strong finish for the Dane.

Scotland’s Calum SCOTT (-6) finished 3rd after a final round 68, which also included six birdies, lifted him up three places. Scott has enjoyed a good Freashman season at Texas Tech University and continues to trend upwards. This is the best result of his career to date.

Neergaard-Petersen, Scott and Javier BARCOS GARBAYO (ESP), who finished 4th on 283 (-5), all earned exemptions into Final Qualifying for the Open Championship as a result of their top 4 finishes.

The other GB&I players to finish in the top 50 were Harley SMITH (ENG) -1 tied 9th, Rob MORAN (IRL) Ev tied 18th, Callum BRUCE (SCO) +1 T23, James ASHFIELD (WAL) +2 tied 23rd and Josh HILL (ENG), Matt MCCLEAN (IRL) & Frank KENNEDY (ENG) +5 tied 44th.

Round 3

Filippo CELLI (ITA) recaptured the lead from compatriot Pietro BOVARI (ITA) on Day 3 after they recorded rounds of 73 and 75 respectively. Celli will start the final day on -5 with Bovari tied for 2nd, one shot further back, alongside Javier BARCOS (ESP), Sam SLATER (AUS), whose 66 was the low round of the day, Michael MJAASETH (DEN) and Yannick MALIK (GER).

South African Casey JARVIS, who has largely disappointed on Golf RSA’s European tour, crept into contention with a 68. He is now tied 6th in a group of four players which includes Calum SCOTT (SCO), GB&I’s leading player, on 214 (-2).

The other leading GB&I players are James ASHFIELD (WAL) -1 tied 10th, Harley SMITH (ENG) Ev tied 14th, Rob MORAN (IRL) +1 tied 18th and Frank KENNEDY (ENG), Matt MCCLEAN (IRL), Olly HUGGINS (ENG) and Rory FRANNSEN (SCO), all +2 tied 27th.

There are now just 17 players on even par or better. The average score in Round 3 was 74.41, the lowest we have seen to date.

Welshman James ASHFIELD is tied 1st for the ‘most pars or better’ with 48 whilst Ben QUINNEY (ENG) leads the field in ‘most birdies or better’ with 15. In terms of the standings that matter Quinney is tied 55th on 222 (+6).

67 players made the top 60 and ties cut which fell at +6.

Round 2

Pietro BOVARI (ITA) shot a bogey free 66 in Round 2, the best round of the day by two shots, to move into the lead of the European Amateur.

Overnight leader and compatriot Filippo CELLI (ITA) slipped into 2nd place after recording a 2-over 74.

Jack INGHAM (NED) followed his opening 70 with a 69 to move up 16 places to 3rd place. For the second day running he helped his cause with an eagle on the back nine.

Calum SCOTT (SCO) is now the leading GB&I player. After rounds of 71 and 70 he sits on -3 in tied 5th place.

The other leading home players are Frank KENNEDY (ENG), Robert MORAN (IRL) and Connor GRAHAM (SCO). On 143 (-1) for the first 36 holes they are all tied 15th.

There are now 34 players on even par or better, down from the 45 seen after Round 1 had been completed. The average score in Round 2 was 75.35 (par 72), half a shot higher than the 74.84 posted by the field on Wednesday.

Round 1

Italy’s Filippo CELLI shot a spectacular 64 (-8), which included an eagle, seven birdies and surprisingly a bogey 5 on the 18th, to take a 3-shot lead in the European Amateur at El Saler.

Rasmus NEERGAARD-PETERSEN‘s (DEN) bogey free 67 (-5) on a perfect day for golf in Valencia sees him in sole possession of 2nd place.

Nine players, including Scotland’s Rory FRANSSEN, are tied for third place on -4 after recording 68’s.

15 year old Connor GRAHAM (SCO) -3 is tied 12th with Arron EDWARDS-HILL (ENG), Callum BRUCE (SCO), Olly HUGGINS (ENG), Calum SCOTT (SCO) and Mason ESSAM (ENG) -1, tied 22nd, also under par.

Hamish BROWN (DEN), also on -3, joined his compatriot Neergaard- Petersen as the only other player to go bogey free through the opening 18 holes.

45 players finished Round 1 on even par or better. The average score across all of the 144 players was 74.84 (+2.84).

The 35th European Amateur Championship will be played at El Saler Golf Club, which is located on the southern outskirts of Valancia in Spain, between 22nd-25th June 2022.

This prestigious Championship is run by the European Golf Association (EGA), assisted each year by the host nation; this year, the Royal Spanish Golf Federation.

2022 will be the third occasion that Spain has hosted the European Amateur with El Prat GC in Barcelona hosting the previous two visits.

I will be updating this article with daily reports on play during the week.

Competition Format

The European Amateur is a 72-hole stroke play competition with 18-holes played daily over four days.

A cut takes place after 54 holes with the 60 lowest scores and ties qualifying for the final round.

A 3 hole aggregate score play off will decide the winner in the event of a tie. If this doesn’t separate the players then a sudden death play-off will commence over the same holes.

A card count-back is used for all other ties.

Entries

144 players contest the Championship which is traditionally played in June each year.

All of the players in the field must have handicaps of 0.0 or better with the entry ballot applied based on the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Exemptions were available to the defending champion, a single nomination from each EGA member nation, four nominated players from the host nation, Spain, competitors in the Bonallack Trophy, St. Andrew’s Trophy and Jacques Léglise Trophy matches, the 2022 South American Amateur champion and the 2022 European Mid-Amateur champion.

The 2022 Championship is being staged at El Saler Golf Club in Spain.

The Club was founded in 1968 with the course designed by the prominent Spanish architect Javier Arana.

Located in the Natural Park of La Albufera on the Mediterranean coast it stretches through a protected landscape of dunes and pine forests.

El Saler is 6,950 yards / 6,355 metres long and plays to a par of 72. It has a course rating of 74.2 and a slope of 136.

Highly rated the course has staged the Spanish Open in 1994, 1989, 2001, and 2013, the Seve Trophy in 2003 and it was a European Tour Qualifying School venue between 2013-2017.

2021 European Amateur Championship

Christopher BRING (DEN) won the 2021 European Amateur Championship by 2-shots with a 264 (-20) total.

Ludvig ÅBERG (SWE) finished 2nd on 266 (-18) and David PUIG (ESP) 269 (-15) 3rd. Both players are returning this year and are expected to do well again.

Due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions there were no players from Great Britain in the field at Golf Du Médoc Resort in France but Marc BOUCHER, Max KENNEDY, Robert MORAN and Michael YOUNG from Ireland all made it to the start line. However, all four missed the 54 hole cut.

History

The competition was first contested in 1986 at Eindhoven G.C. Initially it was held biennially before moving to an annual fixture from 1990.

Former winners who have gone on to enjoy very successful professional careers include Stephen GALLACHER (1994), Sergio GARCIA (1995), Gregory HAVRET (1999), Carl PETTERSSON (2000), Rory MCILROY (2006), Victor DUBUISSON (2009) and Nicolai HØJGÅRD (2018).

In addition to Gallacher and McIlroy other GB&I past winners include Jim PAYNE (1991), Paddy GRIBBEN (1998), Stephen BROWNE (2001), Brian MCELHINNEY (2003), Matthew RICHARDSON (2004), Rhys PUGH (2012) and Ashley CHESTERS (2013 and 2014) and Alfie PLANT (2017).

Ashley Chesters is the only two-time winner and the only player to have retained the trophy.

Match Play Final

TEXAS beat ARIZONA STATE 3-2 in the Final to win the 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.

Texas finished fourth in the stroke play qualifying and previously beat Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt in match play.

Arizona State finished seventh in the stroke play qualifying and took out Oklahoma and Pepperdine in the earlier match play rounds.

Interestingly Texas’s two previously unbeaten players Cole Hammer and Mason Nome both lost their games in the Final with the longhorns relying on Parker Coody, Pierceson Coody and Travis Vick to secure the title.

Arizona State’s David Puig (ESP), who announced on the day of the final he would be competing in the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Golf series, won his match.

Match Play Semi-Finals (PM)

ARIZONA STATE beat defending champions PEPPERDINE 4-1 in the opening Semi-Final. Mason Andersen, Preston Summerhays and Cameron Sick maintained their unbeaten records. James Leow was substituted in for Jose Ballester this afternoon but suffered the team’s only defeat.

TEXAS will play Arizona State in the final having beat VANDERBILT 3-1-1 in their Semi-Final. Cole Hammer has won both of his games whilst Mason Nome remains unbeaten with one win and one draw to his name.

Match Play Quarter Finals (AM)

GB&I interest ended with TEXAS TECH‘s 3-2 loss to Vanderbilt. Sandy SCOTT beat William Moll 2&1 but Calum SCOTT bogeyed the 18th to hand Reid Davenport a 1 Hole victory.

ARIZONA STATE beat OKLAHOMA 3-2. Chris Gotterup, who later in the day collected the Haskins Award which is handed out to the outstanding male collegiate golfer, was notably thrashed 7&5 by Preston Summerhays.

Defending champions PEPPERDINE got the better of NORTH CAROLINA 3-2 whilst TEXAS beat OKLAHOMA STATE 3-2 in the final match of the series.

Stroke Play Round 4

Gordon SARGENT of Vanderbilt won the Individual title at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship.

He beat Eugenio LOPEZ-CHACARRA (Oklahoma State), Parker COODY (Texas) and Ryan BURNETT (North Carolina) with a birdie three, his first of the day, on the opening play-off hole. Sargent shot a 4-over 74 in the final round as all four players finished their 72 holes on 280 (Ev).

Chris GOTTERUP (Oklahoma) missed out on the play-off with a bogy on his 72nd hole.

Sargent is the ninth freshman to accomplish this feat and the first since Jamie Lovemark in 2007.

Calum SCOTT again delivered the best round by a GB&I player adding another 70 (Ev) to his Championship resume. Whilst older brother Sandy SCOTT‘s 74 wasn’t required their TEXAS TECH team produced a 284 (+4) total for the day to qualify for the match play stage in 8th place on +33.

The other seven qualifiers were VANDERBILT, OKLAHOMA and NORTH CAROLINA (+14), who shared medalist honours, TEXAS (+17) who enjoyed a 277 -3 final round, OKLAHOMA STATE (+21), PEPPERDINE (+26) and ARIZONA STATE (+28).

The eight qualifying schools were all ranked in the top 8 heading into the Championships.

PGA TOUR University Velocity Global Ranking

The second season of the PGA TOUR University Ranking concluded after the completion of the Stroke Play Stage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship.

As expected long time leader Pierceson COODY (Texas) secured the top spot in the 2021/22 ranking.

Coody was joined in the all-important top 5 by Jacob BRIDGEMAN (Clemson), Logan MCALLISTER (Oklahoma), RJ MANKE (Washington) and Cole HAMMER (Texas). These five players have earned Korn Ferry Tour membership and are exempt into all full field events from 9th June. They are also fast tracked into the Final Stage of this year’s Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School tournament.

Alex FITZPATRICK (Wake Forest) finished in sixth place to earn membership on one of the PGA TOUR’s International Tours and an exemption into the 2022 Second Stage of this year’s Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School tournament.

Stroke Play Round 3

Calum SCOTT delivered the best round by a GB&I player in Round 3. His 70 (Ev) along with his brother’s Sandy SCOTT‘s 72 (+2) helped their TEXAS TECH team qualify for Day 4 in tied 9th place.

The top 15 teams and 9 individuals not on those teams progressed to the final stroke play round which will be played on Monday.

After 54 holes OKLAHOMA (-1) lead the Team competition with a 4-from-5 total score of 839 (-1). OKLAHOMA STATE (+3) are second, VANDERBILT (+5) third, NORTH CAROLINA (+9) fourth and defending champions PEPPERDINE (+13) fifth.

BRIGHAM YOUNG (+37) were 23rd in the Team standings after 36 holes. Due to religious observances the Cougars do not play on Sundays so they played their third round last Thursday, after everyone else had practiced. Each member of their team played as a single with a marker. They posted a 290 (+10) team score which three days later helped them jump up two places to tied 21st in the standings on +47.

After 54 holes Sandy SCOTT +8 tied 44th is the leading GB&I player.

Callum BRUCE and Dan BRADBURY, +9 tied 49th, also qualified for the final round as leading individuals not on one of the top 15 teams.

Alex FITZPATRICK followed up his second round 65 with a 71. On -4 for his two rounds he potentially should be contesting the Individual title but having missed the first round due to illness he is unfortunately now on his way home.

After 54 holes Gordon SARGENT (Vanderbilt) -4 leads the Individual standings. Chris GOTTERUP (Oklahoma) -3 is second, Eugenio LOPEZ-CHACARRA (Oklahoma State) -2 third and Patrick WELCH (Oklahoma) -1 fourth. Welch shot the round of the week in Round 3; an outstanding 63 which included seven unblemished birdies.

Stroke Play Round 2

Alex FITZPATRICK made a triumphant return to the Wake Forest line up by shooting a bogey free, joint best of the week 65 (-5). He replaced Clay Stirsman in the Deacs team. However, by missing the first round due to illness he is obviously now excluded from the Individual competition.

Callum BRUCE maintained his momentum with an even par 70 which included three birdies, two of them coming on his opening two holes, the 10th and 11th. He finished the day on 141 +1 in tied 9th place.

The next best placed GB&I player is Sandy SCOTT who followed up his opening 75 with a 71. On 146 +6 he sits in tied 42nd place.

Calum SCOTT replaced Andy Lopez in the Texas Tech line up and contributed a counting 75 on Day 2.

The course remains tough to score on with only 10 players breaking par in Round 2 out of the 156 starters.

After 36 holes Cole SHERWOOD (Vanderbilt) -3 leads Aman GUPTA (Oklahoma State) and Gordon SARGENT (Vanderbilt), both -2, in the Individual standings.

OKLAHOMA (+2) came through the field to take the lead in the Team competition with a Round 2 4-from-5 score of 275 -5, the lowest of the week. VANDERBILT (+4) are second, OKLAHOMA STATE (+6) third, NORTH CAROLINA (+9) fourth and defending champions PEPPERDINE (+16) fifth.

Stroke Play Round 1

Alex FITZPATRICK and Calum SCOTT, having originally been selected for Round 1 by their Wake Forest and Texas Tech coaches respectively didn’t make it to the first tee. Fitzpatrick had a stomach bug whilst Coach Greg Sands appears to have had a late change of heart and gone with Sandy SCOTT rather than his younger brother in the Texas Tech line up.

Likewise Callum BRUCE was called upon for the first round to play for Kansas University having initially travelled as the No. 6 Reserve.

With temperatures rising to 100 degrees the course played firm and fast and proved a challenge for all of the competitors. Just seven players out of the 156 starters broke par.

Harry HILLIER (Kansas) and Brendan VALDES (Auburn) lead the Individual standings after shooting 68’s (-2).

VANDERBILT (+2) lead OREGON and AUBURN (+5) and KANSAS and ARIZONA (+6) in the team competition.

The 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship starts on Friday 27th May at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona with Arizona State University hosting the competition.

Greyhawk staged the National Championships last year and has just finished hosting the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s event. The course is 7,289 yards long and plays to a par of 70. With a tough set up always assured few players are understandably able to break par over the 72 holes.

30 5-man teams and 6 individuals not on those teams qualified to play through six Regional events played on 16th – 18th May. To learn more about the Regionals please read my earlier article – NCAA Division I Men’s Regionals – 2022 Preview & Results

At the National Championship 54 holes of stroke play will be played on 27th – 29th May. A cut will then take place which will see the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on those teams play a final 18 holes on 30 May. After 72 holes an Individual champion is crowned with the leading 8 teams progressing to a match play stage. Seeded match play will then take place on 31 May – 1 June and will be used determine the Team national champions.

Team scores in the stroke play stage are based on a best four from five players cumulative total.

There are seven GB&I players competing this year – Dan BRADBURY (Florida State), Barclay BROWN (Stanford), Ben CARBERRY (East Tennessee State), Archie DAVIES (East Tennessee State), Alex FITZPATRICK (Wake Forest), Mark POWER (Wake Forest) and Calum SCOTT (Texas Tech).

Callum BRUCE (San Diego State) and Sandy SCOTT (Texas Tech) will start the week as No. 6 substitute players for their respective teams but will probably see some action in due course. At the start of each stroke play and match play round reserves can be introduced by team coaches to cover for illness, injuries and / or loss of form.

PGA TOUR University Velocity Global Ranking

The stroke play stage of the NCAA Championship is the final tournament for the 2022 PGA Tour University ranking.

Players finishing 1st-5th earn membership on the Korn Ferry Tour and players finishing 6th-15th secure membership on one of the PGA TOUR’s international tours.

Coody, McAllister and Bridgeman are already very likely to finish in the top 5 but any of the eight players ranked 4th-13th, shown above, who qualified for the Championships could still join them.

Using a target average points score of 1061 (which would be No. 5 in the current Ranking) the above table shows where each of the challenging players needs to finish to get one of the big prizes. From a GB&I perspective Alex FITZPATRICK (ENG) will need a minimum top 9 finish to secure a spot on the Korn Ferry Tour.

2021 Results

Pepperdine University beat Oklahoma University 3-2 at the Greyhawk Golf Club in Arizona to win the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s National title.

It was the second time in their history that the Malibu, California based team had lifted the National Championship trophy. They previously won in 1997.

The team consisted of Clay FEAGLER, a fifth year senior, junior Joe HIGHSMITH, sophomore Dylan MENANTE, sophomore William MOUW and senior Joey VRZICH.

Pepperdine finished 3rd in the stroke play stage of the competition whilst Oklahoma came in 4th.

Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Oklahoma, Illinois, Florida State, Vanderbilt and North Carolina were the eight teams to advance to the match play stage.

With rounds of 68, 67, 68 and 70 (-7) Turk PETTIT of Clemson University won the NCAA Division I Men’s Individual Championship. He finished 1 shot ahead of Bo JIN who was representing Oklahoma State with Ryggs JOHNSTON from Arizona State a further shot back.

Alex FITZPATRICK (Wake Forest) was GB&I’s highest finisher. A final round 76 saw him have to settle for a +9 total and a tied 39th finish. After a poor opening round of 78 John MURPHY (Louisville) settled well. His final +11 total was good enough for a tied 52nd.

The six 54-hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 16th-18th May.

The NCAA Committee select the participating teams and leading individuals, from non-qualifying teams, largely based on the GolfStat U.S. College 2021/22 Men’s Division I Rankings which can be viewed here – TEAM and INDIVIDUAL.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in late April with thirty Conference champions granted automatic qualification into the 2022 Regionals.

The teams and individuals are seeded and spread across the Regional sites to ensure each field is broadly of equal standing.

Three of the sites will have 13 teams and 10 individuals competing, while three will have 14 teams and five individuals. There will therefore be 81 5-man teams and 45 individuals playing in total.

The low five teams (30 in total) and the low individual (6 in total) not on those teams from each Regional will advance to the National Championships.

The 2022 National Team and Individual titles will be decided on 27th May – 1st June at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Arizona State University and The Thunderbirds are hosting this year’s Championship on behalf of the NCAA.

Each qualifying team is listed below in seed order so it is clear who the favourites are to progress from each Regional.

After the College or University name you will also find the Team’s Golfweek / Sagarin national ranking and if they earned automatic qualification the Conference Championship they won to do so.

46 GB&I players are attached to the qualifying colleges and are highlighted in bold blue type below.

However, only 27 of these individuals have been selected for their college’s initial five-man team. If they have not been picked a bold red N/S (‘Not Selected’) has been added after their name.

Each team is now allowed to take a Reserve to the event so it is possible some may be subbed in for later rounds.

The 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships, also played at the Greyhawk Golf Club in Arizona, were won by Pepperdine University.

The Malibu, California based team beat Oklahoma University 3-2 to win their second national title, following up their 1997 victory.

Every player on the Pepperdine team delivered at least one win and one half during the match play stage. The team consisted of Clay FEAGLER, a fifth year senior, junior Joe HIGHSMITH – who both won all three of their games – sophomore Dylan MENANTE, sophomore William MOUW and senior Joey VRZICH.

Pepperdine had earlier finished 3rd in the stroke play stage of the competition with Oklahoma coming in 4th.

NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship – 2021 Preview & Results

Pepperdine University beat Oklahoma University 3-2 at the Greyhawk Golf Club in Arizona to win the 2021 NCAA Division I National title.

It was the second time in their history that the Malibu, California based team had lifted the National Championship trophy. They previously won in 1997.

Every player on the Pepperdine team delivered at least one win and one half during the match play stage. However, the stars for the Waves were Clay FEAGLER, a fifth year senior, and junior Joe HIGHSMITH who both won all three of their games.

The team line up also included sophomore Dylan MENANTE, sophomore William MOUW and senior Joey VRZICH.

With rounds of 68, 67, 68 and 70 (-7) Turk PETTIT of Clemson University won the NCAA Division I Individual Championship.

He finished 1 shot ahead of Bo JIN who was representing Oklahoma State with Ryggs JOHNSTON from Arizona State a further shot back.

Alex FITZPATRICK was GB&I’s highest finisher. A final round 76 saw him have to settle for a +9 total and a tied 39th finish.

After a poor opening round of 78 John MURPHY settled well. His final +11 total was good enough for a tied 52nd.

In the Team competition Georgia Tech (+1) beat TCU (+4) in the 54-hole team play-off to start the day off.

From a GB&I perspective it was a disappointing day as both Louisville and Wake Forest missed out on the match play stage, thus ending our interest in the Championship.

Wake Forest had a disastrous final day recording a +23 score which saw them tumble down the rankings.

Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Oklahoma, Illinois, Florida State, Vanderbilt and North Carolina were the eight teams to advance to the match play stage.

30th May 2021

The 54 hole first cut saw the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on those teams progress to the final 18 holes of stroke-play.

Alex FITZPATRICK (ENG) and Mark POWER (IRL) helped their Wake Forest team through to the next stage in tied 6th place on +13. In the individual standings Alex +3 is tied 22nd and Mark +8 tied 56th.

Louisville proved to be one of the surprise packages finishing the first stage of the Championship in 12th place on +24. John MURPHY (IRL) +9 is tied 67th. After an opening round 78 Max KENNEDY (IRL) was dropped with Dev MORLEY (IRL) coming in to replace him. Dev posted a counting 74 in round 2 and a 76 in round 3.

Georgia Tech and TCU will play-off [5-from-5 scores to count playing holes 14-18 concurrently] to determine the final team progressing to round 4.

The final round of stroke play will be played on Monday 31st to establish the eight teams that will progress to match play as well as the Individual champion.

To date play has proven much easier in the morning with the course firming up as the temperatures reach the high 90’s in the afternoon.

Day 3 was as far as it went for the following GB&I players and their teams.

Rhys NEVIN-WHARTON +11 finished T90 as his Tennessee team missed out on a play-off for the final stroke-play day by just 1-shot.

Joe PAGDIN +15 finished tied 115th with his Florida team coming in 22nd.

Toby BRIGGS +15 also finished tied 115th as his San Francisco team finished in 29th place.

Archie DAVIES +18 finished tied 130th with East Tennessee State ending their Championship in 28th place. Despite his team under performing Head Coach Jake Amos chose not to play Ben CARBERRY in any of the rounds.

Callum BRUCE +21 finished tied 139th as San Diego State failed to progress in tied 25th place.

University of Texas were the highest ranked team to crash out after the first stage. They were not helped when one of their star men Pierceson Coody became ill after his first round and was unable to play on the subsequent two days.

The 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship starts on Friday 28th May at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona with Arizona State University hosting this year’s competition.

Greyhawk has just finished hosting the Women’s NCAA Division I Championship. The set up proved to be demanding with few players finishing under par.

30 5-man teams and 6 individuals not on those teams qualified to play through six Regional events played on 17th – 19th May. To learn more about these please read my earlier article – NCAA Division I Men’s Regionals – 2021 Preview & Results

Stanford, the last champions in 2019, failed to progress through their Regional event at Albuquerque. They were not helped when two of their leading players, Barclay Brown (ENG) and Henry Shrimp (USA), failed COVID-19 tests on the eve of the competition and were forced to withdrawal from the Cardinals line-up.

At the National Championship 54 holes of stroke play will be played on 28-30 May. A cut will then take place which will see the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on those teams play a final 18 holes on 31 May. After 72 holes an Individual champion is crowned with the leading 8 teams progressing to a match play stage. Seeded match play will then take place on 1-2 June and will be used determine the Team national champions.

Team scores in the stroke play stage are based on a best four from five players cumulative total.

There are nine GB&I players competing this year – Toby BRIGGS (San Francisco), Callum BRUCE (San Diego State), Archie DAVIES (East Tennessee State), Alex FITZPATRICK (Wake Forest), Max KENNEDY (Louisville), John MURPHY (Louisville), Rhys NEVIN-WHARTON (Tennessee), Joe PAGDIN (Florida) and Mark POWER (Wake Forest).

Ben CARBERRY (East Tennessee State) and Dev MORLEY (Louisville) have also been selected as No. 6 substitute players for their respective teams so may see some action. Substitutes can be used by coaches in both the stroke play and match play stages of the Championship to cover injuries and loss of form.

2020 Results

The 2020 NCAA Division 1 National Championship was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2019 Results

Stanford beat Texas 3-2-0 in the 2019 NCAA Division I National Championship match at Blessings G.C. in Arkansas to secure their 9th national title.

Matthew WOLFF (USA) of Oklahoma State won the Individual 2019 NCAA Division I National title. His 278 (-10) total was 5 shots better than second placed Steven FISK (USA).

Just 5 players from the field of 156 recorded an under par score over the 72 holes.

Alex FITZPATRICK (ENG) finished tied 15th in the Individual stroke play standings. Consistent rounds of 75, 73, 72 and 72 saw him post a +4 total. His Wake Forest team lost 3-2-0 to Stanford in the quarter finals of the match play stage, albeit freshman Fitzpatrick won his single beating Junior Henry Shimp by 1 hole.

Harry HALL (ENG), John MURPHY (IRL) and Dev MORLEY (IRL) were the three other GB&I players competing in Arkansas.

Cornishman Hall posted a 54-hole total of 222 (+6) to finish tied 34th. His UNLV team finished on 906 (+42) in tied 20th place and he failed to pick up one of the leading Individual spots.

The two Irishmen were further down the field. John MURPHY (IRL) +17 finished tied 110th and Dev MORLEY (IRE) +18 tied 119th. Their Louisville team were 29th on 932 (+68).

East Tennessee State, led by medalist Shiso Go and T4 placed Welshman Archie Davies, made the headlines at Cle Elum picking up all of the trophies despite supposedly being only the 8th strongest team on site. Having traversed the hole of America to get to the Washington Regional Florida thankfully scraped home on the final day reeling in a 6-shot deficit in Round 3 over the closing holes as Denver buckled under the pressure. Alex Fitzpatrick finished T2 confirming his current status as GB&I’s beat amateur golfer.

The 2020 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Championship was played at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas with The University of Arkansas hosting the competition.

STANFORD UNIVERSITY beat University of Texas 3-2-0 in the 2019 NCAA Division I Championship match to secure their 9th national title.

Matthew WOLFF (USA) of Oklahoma State won the Individual NCAA Division I National title. His 278 (-10) total was 5 shots better than second placed Steven FISK (USA) during the 72 hole stroke play qualifying.

South Beach International Amateur – 2020 Preview & Results

22nd December 2020 – Round 4

Cole HAMMER (USA) won the 2020 South Beach International Amateur with a 267 (-16) total. He completed the tournament with a final round 69 at Miami Beach G.C. to extend his victory margin to 5 shots.

Four under par rounds in the 60’s, on his way to breaking Pierceson Coody’s 2018 winning score record by 5-shots, must have impressed a watching USA Walker Cup captain Nathanial Crosby.

Pierre VIALLANEIX (FRA) -11 finished second with Kelly CHINN (USA) and Zach TAYLOR (USA) -9 tieing for third place.

Archie DAVIES (WAL) -4 was the highest placed GB&I player in tied 15th. In the 5th strongest field of 2020 according to the SPWAR this was arguably a career best performance for the Welshman.

Dan BRADBURY (ENG) finished strongly with a 68 to secure a tied 41st finish on Even par.

Enrique DIMAYUGA (ENG) and Joe PAGDIN (ENG) were our only other players to make the cut with neither able to push on during the final 36 holes.

21st December 2020 – Round 3

Cole HAMMER (USA) took control of the SBIA after a best of the day 62 (-9) in Round 3 at Miami Beach G.C.

Hammer was afforded the final tee time at Normandy Shores G.C. on Saturday after attending the USA Walker Cup team session in Orlando which finished on Friday. His decision to then travel south, the only member of the squad to do so, now looks like being a very good one. After a relatively lacklustre summer a win tomorrow will almost certainly secure his place in the USA team.

Cole now leads Kelly CHINN (USA), the AJGA Rolex Player of the Year, Zack TAYLOR (USA) and Pierre VIALLANEIX (FRA) by 4-shots heading into the final round. Given his experience Hammer should go on to win but nothing can be taken for certain around the demanding Miami Beach course.

Archie DAVIES (WAL) fell back to tied 11th after a 72 on Monday. As on Day 1 he again struggled on Miami Beach’s opening holes, particularly the 4th and 5th which have collectively now cost him 6-shots over two rounds. Nevertheless he showed his battling skills by getting back to even par before a bogey on the 18th took the edge off his back nine comeback.

Enrique DIMAYUGA (ENG), Dan BRADBURY (ENG) and Joe PAGDIN (ENG) stayed in the pack after all struggling to over par rounds in Round 3.

20th December 2020 – Round 2

Frankie CAPAN (USA) and Ben SMITH (USA) share the 36 hole lead at the SBIA on 133 (-8) after recording second rounds of 65 and 63 at Normandy Shores G.C.

Archie DAVIES (WAL) extended his run of bogey free holes to 31 with his own 65 at Normandy Shores and heads into Round 3 alone in 3rd place.

Conditions were near perfect on Sunday and many of the players scored well. Michael ROME’s (USA) 61 at Normandy Shores, which included nine birdies with 6 coming in his final 7 holes, was the highlight.

The 72 players plus ties cut fell at Even par (tied 65th place) with 74 players progressing.

Miami Beach (par 71) played to an average score of 73.77 on Day 2, up by 1.5 shots on Round 1, and Normandy Shores (par 70) to an average score of 70.55, down by 0.61 shots on the opening round. To the extent these things can be assessed a Miami Beach then Normandy Shores draw therefore appears to have been favourable.

Enrique DIMAYUGA (ENG), Dan BRADBURY (ENG) and Joe PAGDIN (ENG) all joined Davies in the latter stages of the tournament. With 36 holes still to play and the field tightly bunched they still have every opportunity to achieve a high finish.

Bradbury’s 69 included a homeward nine of 34 (-2) to comfortably make the cut on -2 overall.

Jake HIBBERT (ENG), Tom MCKIBBIN (IRL) and Max O’HAGAN (ENG) all missed the cut by one shot. Hibbert was perhaps the most unfortunate shot a battling 70 (-1) at Miami Beach on Day 2.

19th December 2020 – Round 1

Calvin MCCOY (USA) from Colorado leads the SBIA at the end of Round 1. Playing at Miami Beach G.C. he shot a 65 (-6) which included eight birdies but also a double bogey on the 13th.

Keller HARPER (USA), Jake MAPLES (USA) and Julien SALE (FRA) are all 1-shot further back. Maples’ 65 (-5) was the lowest round recorded at Normandy Shores G.C. on Day 1.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s top 72 cut 92 players finished Round 1 on Even par (tied 63rd) or better. On Sunday all of the players will play their second round on the other host course.

Miami Beach (par 71) played to an average score of 72.27 (+1.27) in Round 1 and Normandy Shores (par 70) to an average score of 71.16 (+1.16).

Enrique DIMAYUGA (ENG), now a sophomore at nearby Florida Atlantic University, leads the way in tied 5th for the GB&I contingent after a 66 (-4) at Normandy Shores. Enrique’s round included 6 birdies including four in a strong finish over his last eight holes.

Archie DAVIES (WAL) showed excellent fighting spirit on Day 1. 4 over par after 5 holes he produced six unblemished birdies in the remainder of his round at Miami Beach to more than recover his position.

Joe PAGDIN (ENG), playing at Normandy Shores, is tied 43rd on -1. 5 birdies were offset by 4 bogeys on an up and down day for the Walker Cup squad man.

Pleasingly Dan BRADBURY (ENG), Eric MCINTOSH (SCO), Tom MCKIBBIN (IRL), Max O’HAGAN (ENG), all on Even par, and John HOPKINS (ENG) on +1 are all still well within sight of the likely cut line.

The 10th South Beach International Amateur (SBIA) will be played between 19th – 22nd December 2020 in Miami Beach, Florida (GMT -5 hours).

First played in 2011 the SBIA has quickly become one of the world’s leading amateur golf competitions.

Unfortunately this year the organisers have been hampered by the USGA holding a USA Walker Cup practice session on 16th – 18th December, the Arnold Palmer Cup being rescheduled for 21st – 23rd December and the COVID-19 pandemic. As such the field appears a little weaker than we have seen in recent years.

Format

The SBIA is a 72 hole stroke play competition played over four days.

18 holes are played at both Miami Beach G.C. and the nearby Normandy Shores G.C. over the first two days.

After a top 72 and ties cut the final 36 holes are played exclusively at Miami Beach over the remaining two days.

Players

A field of 210 players have paid the $395 entry fee and will contest the 2020 SBIA.

10 golfers from Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) are in this year’s starting field, most of whom are studying at U.S. Colleges. The highest number to date was 19 in 2018 and there were 18 last year.

Cole Hammer is the only member of the 16-man 2021 USA Walker Cup Squad that is competing. The SBIA is played just down the coast from Seminole G.C. where the match will be contested next May.

Courses

Both courses were designed by Arthur Hills and play to around 6,800 yards.

They are typical Florida layouts with numerous lakes coming into play throughout the 18 holes. As a result scores can be high if the wind blows – which it frequently does.

Normandy Shores plays to a par of 70 and Miami Beach a par of 71 during the tournament.

2019 South Beach International Amateur

Ben SHIPP (USA) won the 2019 South Beach International Amateur (SBIA) after a play-off with Garett REBAND (USA). Both players finished on 281 (-2). This was the highest winning score in the history of the event reflecting the unusually wet and windy conditions.

From a GB&I perspective Jake BOLTON (ENG) finished 4th on 283 (Ev), Ben JONES (ENG) 5th on 284 (+1) and Tom MCKIBBIN (IRL) 8th on 287 (+4).

South Beach International Amateur – 2019 Preview & Results

Ben SHIPP (USA) won the 2019 South Beach International Amateur (SBIA) after a play-off with Garett REBAND (USA).

Reband three putted his 72nd hole to finish on 281 (-2) and fall back into a tie with Shipp whose 70 (-1) was the lowest round of the final group. Shipp then went on to win the tournament on the second play-off hole.

With late afternoon storms forecast the organisers took the decision to implement a two tee start with players asked to play off the 1st and 10th tees in fourballs from 7.30am. Conditions remained dry for most of the day and the wind receded to more manageable levels when compared with the speeds seen on the first three days.

Reband shot a final round 73 whilst co-leader at the start of the day Karl VILIPS (AUS) could only manage a disappointing 75. Vilips ultimately had to settle for 3rd place on 282 (-1).

Jake BOLTON (ENG), the reigning Scottish Open Amateur champion, finished 4th on 283 (Ev) after a 71. He was the leading GB&I player this week and continues to rise up the amateur rankings (he’s now 37th in the SPWAR).

Ben JONES (ENG) was 5th on 284 (+1). Ben enjoyed a strong weekend, recording a joint best round of the day and the week today with a 67 which included 5 birdies. His 5th place lifted him to 13th spot in the SPWAR meaning he will finish the year as the highest ranked GB&I player.

Tom MCKIBBIN (IRL) also finished well today. His 69 saw him finish on 287 (+4) and he can be pleased with his tied 8th finish.

Barclay BROWN (ENG) finished tied 18th on +6 after a final round 72.

Joe PAGDIN (ENG) never quite got going at Miami Beach this week after a solid opening round at Normandy Shores and had to fight hard for his +9 total score and tied 25th finish.

Olly HUGGINS (ENG) climbed a few places with a final round 71. His 295 (+12) saw him finish in tied 37th.

Angus FLANAGAN (ENG) +16 and Andy GIBSON (SCO) +20 finished tied 58th and tied 72nd respectively.

The 80 players who made the cut enjoyed a dry but windy day. Just 8 of the starting 18 GB&I players made it through for the two weekend rounds at Miami Beach.

Karl VILIPS (AUS) shot a 67 to move into a tie with overnight leader Garett REBAND (USA) on -5. Late birdies on 15 and 16 enabled Reband to post a 69 to draw back level with the Australian who finished a few groups ahead of him.

Four shots further back is Ben SHIPP (USA) who equalled Vilips’ 67, the two lowest scores at Miami Beach this week.

Jake BOLTON (ENG) remained well in the mix with a one-under 70 in Round 3. He heads into tomorrow’s final round on Even par and in sole 4th place.

Ben JONES (ENG) 71 and Barclay BROWN (ENG) 73 are on +5 tied 13th.

Tom MCKIBBIN (IRL) 76 and Joe PAGDIN (ENG) 73 are one shot further back in tied 17th on +6.

Andy GIBSON (SCO) and Angus FLANAGAN (ENG) could only manage a 75 and 78 respectively so fell back to tied 49th on +11. Olly HUGGINS‘ (ENG) 77 sees him in tied 56th on +12.

20th December 2019

Friday saw all of the competitors play their second course, be it Miami Beach or Normandy Shores depending on where they were sent for Round 1. The rain largely stayed away but the strong winds remained.

Garett REBAND (USA), a Senior at Oklahoma, retained the lead on -3 with a 1-under par round of 70 at Miami Beach.

Lucas ABRIAL (FRA), who was 2nd overnight, collapsed to an 81 at Miami Beach and ended up missing the cut.

Jannik De BRUYN (GER) and Garrett MARTIN (USA) moved up to tied 2nd on -2 after they both recorded 69’s (-2) at Miami Beach. The always impressive Karl VILIPS (AUS) finished the day 4th on -1 after a 68 at Normandy Shores.

Tom MCKIBBIN (IRL) starred for GB&I on Day 2; he’s now tied 5th after a 70 (-1) at Miami Beach. The score didn’t tell the full story though with his card including two double bogeys, two bogeys and seven birdies, including five in a row on his front nine.

Jake BOLTON‘s (ENG) level par round at Normandy Shores, which included four birdies, sees him go into the weekend playing alongside McKibbin in tied 5th on +1.

Barclay BROWN (ENG) +3 for the tournament is tied 13th. A double bogey on his final hole at Normandy Shores left him signing for a 71 (+1) and rueing what could have been.

Joe PAGDIN (ENG) and Angus FLANAGAN (ENG) both found the going tougher on Day 2 at Miami Beach. Pagdin stumbled to a 75 (+4) whilst Flanagan posted a 73 (+2). Nevertheless the Englishmen will go into the weekend still well placed in tied 20th on +4.

Ben JONES‘s (ENG) 71 (+1) at Normandy Shores included 15 pars. A couple more scores around par over the weekend, where he starts in tied 28th on +5, should lift him further up the leaderboard.

80 players, tied 61st or better, made the top 72 cut which fell at +8. The second highest cut mark in the 9 years the tournament has been played. It was +11 in 2011, the SBIA’s inaugural year.

Olly HUGGINS (ENG) +6 tied 37th and Andy GIBSON (SCO) +7 tied 47th were the two other GB&I players to progress.

Ben SCHMIDT (ENG) +9, Charlie THORNTON (ENG) +9, Enrique DIMAYUGA (ENG) +12, Archie DAVIES (WAL) +14, Philip ROWE (ENG) +15, Sam ROOK (ENG) +16, Max MARTIN (ENG) +17, Jack BROOKS (ENG) +20, Curtis KNIPES (ENG) +20 and Jake HIBBERT (ENG) +23 all missed the cut.

The main news on Day 1 was the weather. It rained most of the day with scoring conditions not helped by a 20mph north easterly wind which blew strongly across the two host courses.

Garett REBAND (USA) shot a 68 (-2) at Normandy Shores to take the outright lead on Day 1. Lucas ABRIAL (FRA) managed a 69 (-1) at the same course to secure 2nd place.

Joe PAGDIN (ENG) was the leading GB&I player in tied 4th after a scrambling 70 (Ev) at Normandy Shores.

Jake BOLTON‘s (ENG) 71 (+1) at the tougher Miami Beach was arguably an even better round given the conditions. Likewise Barclay BROWN (ENG) will be pleased to have left there with a 73 (+2).

Back at Normandy Shores Tom MCKIBBIN (IRL) and Angus FLANAGAN (ENG) both recorded 72’s (+2) to also do themselves no harm in the early stages.

Unfortunately many competitors, including a number from GB&I, played themselves out of the tournament on Day 1 unable to cope with the challenging conditions on two tough courses.

The 9th South Beach International Amateur (SBIA) will be played between 19th – 22nd December 2019 in Miami Beach, Florida (GMT -5 hours).

First played in 2011 the SBIA has quickly become one of the world’s leading amateur golf competitions.

It has always attracted an international field and many of the world’s leading amateurs will again be competing this year.

I will continue to update this article once play commences.

Format

The SBIA is a 72 hole stroke play competition played over four days.

18 holes are played at both Miami Beach G.C. and the nearby Normandy Shores G.C. over the first two days.

After a top 72 and ties cut the final 36 holes are played exclusively at Miami Beach over the remaining two days.

Players

A field of 210 players have paid the $385 entry fee and will contest the 2019 SBIA.

The SBIA is expected to have one of the strongest fields in amateur golf in 2019. Only the U.S. Amateur (1st), The Amateur (2nd), Western Amateur (3rd) and NCAA Division I National (4th) will have been better.

Historically around 50% of the players are drawn from overseas with around 30 countries normally represented.

The United States has 85 players in the SPWAR Top 200 so it is interesting that just 12 of them have entered this year’s SBIA. The Junior President’s Cup match taking place the week before in Australia will certainly have impacted the field. The non-entrants include the defending champion Pierceson COODY #15.

Courses

Both courses were designed by Arthur Hills and play to around 6,800 yards.

They are typical Florida layouts with numerous lakes coming into play throughout the 18 holes. As a result scores can be high if the wind blows – which it frequently does.

Normandy Shores plays to a par of 70 and Miami Beach a par of 71.

2018 South Beach International Amateur

The 2018 South Beach International Amateur was played in windy conditions with play on Day 3 ultimately having to be suspended.

Pierceson COODY (USA), a Freshman at the University of Texas and the grandson of 1971 Masters Champion Charles Coody, won the competition with a 272 (-11) total.

A fast finishing Manuel TORRES (VEN), who studies at the nearby Lynn University, shot an impressive 33 on his final back nine for a 66 (-5) to finish one shot back.

Jake BURNAGE (ENG) finished 3rd on 275 (-8). Jake shot a 64 (-6) at Normandy Shores on Day 1 to share the lead before playing very consistently throughout the remainder of the tournament; rounds of 70, 70 and 71 at Miami Beach enabling him to place.

Four other Englishmen made the cut. Jake BOLTON (+1) finished tied 21st, Joe PAGDIN (+3) tied 26th, Ben JONES and Max MARTIN (both +10) tied 62nd.

19 players from Great Britain and Ireland competed last year.
