Regional Championships

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 12th-14th May 2025.

81 teams and 45 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 30th April 2025 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 28 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2025 Regionals. The remaining teams progressed based on their performances throughout the season.

13 teams and 10 individuals were allocated to three of the Regional venues with the remaining sites hosting 14 teams and 5 individuals. As always the draw has been made in such a way that all of the fields are of a similar strength.

Teams of five players play 72 holes of stroke play with their best four scores counting towards their team’s total score. Players, who play in each round, are also eligible for a separate Individual competition.

I will be updating this article with a summary of the results when play is completed.

National Championships

5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California on 23rd-28th May 2025.

The National Championships start with 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams and 9 individuals, not on an advancing team, then progress to a final 18 holes of stroke play. After these 72 holes have been played an Individual champion is determined and the top 8 teams advance to a match play stage to establish the Team champions.

Auburn are the defending champions after they defeated Florida State 3-2 in the 2024 Championship Final in Carlsbad. Georgia Tech sophomore Hiroshi Tai (SGP) won the Individual title with a 72 hole total score of 285 (-3).

Details of the six Regional Championships are shown below with each team and individual listed in seed order and, if they earned automatic qualification, the Conference Championship they recently won to do so.

GB&I players attached to the qualifying colleges are highlighted in bold blue type. Each team is now allowed to take a Reserve to the event so it is possible some may not play or be subbed in and out during the week.

37 GB&I players are featuring at the Regional Championships with 3 of these starting as substitutes.

Regional Championships

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 5th-7th May 2025.

72 teams and 36 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 23rd April 2025 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 28 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2025 Regionals. The remaining teams progressed based on their performances throughout the season.

12 teams and 6 individuals were allocated to each of the six Regional venues with a strength-of-field metric factored in to ensure balance and fairness across all of them.

Teams of five players play 72 holes of stroke play with their best four scores counting towards their team’s total score. Players, who play in each round, are also eligible for a separate Individual competition.

The leading 5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California on 16th-21st May 2025.

Regional Champion Awards have been given to the team champions at each site since 2024.

I will be updating this article with a summary of the results when play is completed.

National Championships

The Division I Competition Oversight Committee announced in January 2023 that the field for the Division I Women’s Golf National Championships would be increased from 147 to 156. The number of teams was also increased from 27 to 30 with the number of individual participants falling from 12 to 6.

The National Championships start off with 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams and 9 individuals, not on an advancing team, then progress to a final 18 holes of stroke play. After these 72 holes have been played an Individual champion is determined and the top 8 teams advance to a match play stage to establish the Team champions.

Stanford beat UCLA in the Final of the 2024 NCAA Div. I Women’s National Championship in Carlsbad with Adela Cernousek (FRA / Texas A&M) winning the Individual title, her first collegiate win.

CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Clemson (-25), 2nd East Tennessee State (-24), 3rd North Carolina (-20), 4th Georgia Tech (-17), 5th Baylor (-15)

INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST: Austin Greaser (North Carolina) -13

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: Nick Matthews (NC State) T2 -12

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – THOMAS HIGGINS (IRL / CLEMSON) T14 -6, MATTHEW DODD-BERRY (ENG / EAST TENNESSEE STATE) T14 -6,  JENSON FORRESTER (ENG / EAST TENNESSEE STATE) T48 +4, BEN CARBERRY (SCO / EAST TENNESSEE STATE) Rd 1-3 NS
Non-Qualified – CHARLIE FORSTER (ENG / LONG BEACH STATE) 4th -11, CAMERON ADAM (SCO / NORTHWESTERN) 29th -1, CONOR GOUGH (ENG / CHARLOTTE) T42 +3 NIALL SHIELS DONEGAN (SCO / NORTHWESTERN) T42 +3

East Tennessee State, coached by England’s Jake Amos, continued their fine form with a strong qualification but were just piped to the Championship by surprise package Clemson. Thomas Higgins and Matt Dodd-Berry impressed for their teams but the GB&I star of the show was undoubtedly Charlie Forster who finished 4th. Sadly he missed out on progressing as an Individual by 1-shot to Nick Matthews. Forster’s Long Beach team finished 7th on -13, 2-shots short of Baylor in 5th.

RANCHO SANTE FE, CALIFORNIA

CLICK HERE FOR THE GOLFSTAT RESULTSTEAM and INDIVIDUAL

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Oklahoma (-3), 2nd California (+3), 3rd Oklahoma State (+5), 4th West Virginia (+5), 5th North Florida (+10)

INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST: Ben Lorenz (Oklahoma) -8

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: Andi Xu (San Diego) T2 -4

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – None
Non-Qualified – PAUL CONROY (IRL / CHATTANOOGA) T42 +11, DAVID LALLY (IRL / SETON HALL) T47 +12, GEORGE FRICKER (ENG / SETON HALL) 67th +20

The Rancho Sante Fe course played tough with scoring high. West Virginia, who finished 3rd, progressed to the Nationals for the first time in 47 years. However, the real upset here was that Pac-12 champions and top seeds Arizona State could only manage a 6th place finish so missed out. There was no joy for the small number of GB&I players at this site.

STANFORD, CALIFORNIA

CLICK HERE FOR THE GOLFSTAT RESULTSTEAM and INDIVIDUAL

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Illinois (-36), 2nd Florida State (-28), 3rd Texas A&M (-19), T4 SMU (-10), T4 Stanford (-10)

Non-Qualified – ENRIQUE DIMAYUGA (ENG / NEVADA) T14 -4, CHARLIE CROCKETT (ENG / MISSOURI) T26 -1, JOE SYKES (ENG / IDAHO) T44 +3

Playing as an Individual Enrique Dimayuga continued his excellent Spring Season form with a T14 finish at Stanford. Charlie Crockett also played better than his score falling down the leaderboard after a disappointing finish to his final round. Stanford narrowly avoided the embarrassment of missing out on their home course thus affording both Michael Thorbjornsen and Barclay Brown a proper send off at the Nationals.

WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA

1st May 2024 (Updated 12th May 2024)

Regional Championships

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 13th-15th May 2024.

81 teams and 45 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 1st May 2024 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 30 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2024 Regionals.

National Championships

5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California on 24th-29th May 2024.

Florida is the defending champion after they defeated Georgia Tech 3-1 in the 2023 Championship Final, played at Greyhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Arizona. Florida’s Fred BIONDI (BRA) won the Individual title with a 273 (-7) total.

Details of the six Regional Championships are shown below with each team listed in seed order and, if they earned automatic qualification, the Conference Championship they recently won to do so.

GB&I players attached to the qualifying colleges are highlighted in bold blue type. Each team is now allowed to take a Reserve to the event so it is possible some may not play or be subbed in and out during the week.

27 GB&I players will start the Regional Championships with a further 4 on the bench waiting to be called upon.

Regional Championships

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 6th-8th May 2024.

72 teams and 36 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 24th April 2024 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 27 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2024 Regionals.

The leading 5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California on 17th-22nd May 2024.

Beginning this year, Regional Champion Awards will be given to the team champions at each site.

I will be updating this article with a summary of the results when play is completed.

National Championships

The Division I Competition Oversight Committee announced in January 2023 that the field for Division I Women’s Golf National Championships would be increased from 147 to 156. The number of teams was also increased from 27 to 30 with the number of individual participants falling from 12 to 6.

The National Championships start with 54 holes off of stroke play. The top 15 teams and 9 individuals, not on an advancing team, then progress to a final 18 holes of stroke play. After these 72 holes have been played an Individual champion is determined and the top 8 teams advance to a match play stage to establish the Team champions.

Wake Forest defeated Southern California to win the 2023 Division I Women’s Golf National title. Rose Zhang of Stanford won the 2023 individual competition, becoming the first back-to-back individual NCAA champion.

Non-Qualified – T20 CAMERON ADAM (SCO / NORTHWESTERN) -10

Whilst there were no standout GB&I Individual performances top 5 team results from Stanford, San Francisco and ETSU, who came through a play-off with Northwestern for the final spot, means Las Vegas proved to be our most fruitfiul Regional event.

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Mississippi State (20) -1, 2nd Brigham Young (44) +4, 3rd Florida State (6) +7, 4th Baylor (31) +9, 5th Pepperdine (11) +11

INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST: Luke Clanton (Florida State) -6

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: T2 Riley Lewis (Loyola Marymount) -4 [he beat Maximilian Steinlacher (Loyola Marymount) in the 3-hole play-off]

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – T37 JACK BIGHAM (ENG / FLORIDA STATE) +7
Non-Qualified – T4 CHARLIE CROCKETT (ENG / MISSOURI) -1, T24 CONOR GOUGH (ENG / CHARLOTTE) +5, T32 SAM MURPHY (IRL / GRAND CANYON) +6, T45 MAX KENNEDY (IRL / LOUISVILLE) +10, DNS CRAIG PASSMORE (ENG / GRAND CANYON)

Sometimes a player doesn’t progress to the National Championships when arguably they deserve to. Charlie Crockett can consider himself unfortunate not to having finished tied 4th on -1 in the Individual standings. Jack Bigham, who came home tied 37th on +7, contributed three scoring rounds for Florida State to help them finish 3rd to earn a starting berth in Arizona. The biggest disappointment from a GB&I perspective was the performance of Max Kennedy, who has enjoyed an excellent Spring season in the States, but came up well short in California.

NORMAN, OKLAHOMA

CLICK HERE FOR THE GOLFSTAT RESULTS – TEAM and INDIVIDUAL

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Alabama (16) -28, 2nd Oklahoma (9) -25, 3rd Colorado (66) -23, 4th Texas Tech (8) -22, 5th Duke (25) -21

INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST: Ludvig Aberg (Texas Tech) -14

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: T4 Will King (Kansas) -9 [he beat Hugo Townsend (Ole Miss) on the 8th play-off hole]

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – T23 CALUM SCOTT (SCO / TEXAS TECH) -3
Non-Qualified – T21 JAMES SWASH (ENG / LOUISIANA TECH) -4, T35 MARK POWER (IRL / WAKE FOREST) -1

Calum Scott battled hard all week and his final round 68 proved all important in getting his Texas Tech team over the qualifying line. Of course it also helps if you have World No. 1 Ludvig Aberg in your line-up.  James Swash, playing as an Individual, did well and Mark Power fought back strongly after a disappointing 77 on Day 1 but both saw their college seasons end in Oklahoma.

SALEM, SOUTH CAROLINA

TEAM LEADERS: 1st Georgia Tech (5) -53, 2nd Arkansas (35) -45, 3rd North Carolina (3) -43, 4th New Mexico (46) -42, 5th Texas A&M (14) -29 [they beat Clemson (50) after a five hole team play-off]

INDIVIDUAL LEADER: Ryan Burnett (North Carolina) -17

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: 2nd Sam Lape (Furman) -15

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – None
Non-Qualified – 63rd THOMAS HIGGINS (IRL / CLEMSON) +4

Thomas Higgins didn’t make much of an impression but his Clemson team probably should have progressed taking him with them. A slightly disappointing final day -13 score and then a play-off loss to Texas A&M, led by their star player Sam Bennett, saw them just miss out on the Nationals.

4th May 2023

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 15th-17th May 2023.

81 teams and 45 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 3rd May 2023 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 30 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2023 Regionals.

National Championships

5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Arizona on 26th-31st May 2023.

Texas is the defending champion after they defeated Arizona State 3-2 in the 2022 Championship Final.

Details of the six Regional Championships are shown below with each team listed in seed order with their Golfweek / Sagarin national ranking in brackets and, if they earned automatic qualification, the Conference Championship they recently won to do so.

GB&I players attached to the qualifying colleges are highlighted in bold blue type. Each team is now allowed to take a Reserve to the event so it is possible some may not play or be subbed in and out during the week.

20 GB&I players will be competing in the Regional Championships on Day 1.

NCAA Division I Women’s Regionals – 2023 Preview & Results

10th May 2023

Here is a summary of the results from the six 54-hole NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regional Championships which were played on 8th-10th May 2023.

The low five teams (30 in total) and the low individual (6 in total) not on those teams from each Regional advanced to the National Championships.

For more information on these Regional Championships please read the Preview article lower down this page.

The 2023 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship will be played on 19th – 24th May at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

[Teams are listed below with their Golfweek / Sagarin national ranking in brackets]

ATHENS, GEORGIA

CLICK HERE FOR THE GOLFSTAT RESULTS – TEAM and INDIVIDUAL

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Georgia (30) -13, 2nd South Carolina (4) -11, 3rd San Jose State (15) +14, 4th Ole Miss (17) +17, 5th Augusta (83) +21

INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST: Jenny Bae (Georgia) -13

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: T5 Leon Takagi (Kent State) -3

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – 3rd HANNAH DARLING (SCO / SOUTH CAROLINA) -6, DNF ELLEN HUME (ENG / OLE MISS)*
Non-Qualified T37 CALEY MCGINTY (ENG / OHIO STATE) +10

University of Georgia and Jenny Bae took full advantage of playing on their home course to win both the Team and Individual titles.

*Ellen was substituted in for Ole Miss teammate Elle Johnson in the final round and having delivered a counting score will hopefully make their starting lineup in Arizona.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Michigan State (39) +8, 2nd Duke (25) +11, T3 Texas (14) +14, T3 Northwestern (10) +14, 5th LSU (3) +15

INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST: Latanna Stone (LSU) & Brooke Biermann (Michigan State) -3

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: 3rd SARA BYRNE (IRL) -4

Qualified – 3rd SARA BYRNE (IRL / MIAMI) -4, T25 AINE DONEGAN (IRL / LSU) +7
Non-Qualified – T6 JESS BAKER (ENG) +1, T43 OLIVIA LEE (ENG) +13

A brilliant effort from Ireland’s Sara Byrne who, despite travelling and playing without her Miami teammates, took the Individual qualifying spot with a 3rd place finish.

PULLMAN, WASHINGTON

CLICK HERE FOR THE GOLFSTAT RESULTSTEAM and INDIVIDUAL

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Stanford (2) -50, 2nd Clemson (31) -33, 3rd USC (12) -26, 4th Baylor (11) -23, 5th Texas Tech (32) -19

INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST: Rose Zhang (Stanford) -19

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: 3rd Tiffany Le (UC-Riverside) -14

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – T13 ROSIE BELSHAM (ENG / BAYLOR) -6
Non-Qualified – T49 HARRIET LYNCH (ENG / FRESNO STATE) +5

Defending champions Stanford (despite missing through injury Rachel Heck and Brooke Seay, two of their normal starters) and their star player Rose Zhang showed ominous form in Washington. Zhang won her 11th event, tieing a men’s and women’s school record with Patrick Cantley, Maverick McNealy and Tiger Woods, in just her 19th Stanford career start – far less than therm.

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Arizona (27) -5, 2nd N.C. State (51) -3, 3rd Wake Forest (1) Ev, 4th TCU (46) +2, 5th Florida State (45) +6

INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST: Dorota Zalewska (Chattanooga) -12

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: 1st Dorota Zalewska (Chattanooga) -12

GB&I PLAYERS:

Non-Qualified – 36th BETH COULTER (IRL / ARIZONA STATE) +7, T40 ANNABELL FULLER (ENG / FLORIDA) +9

Surprise package Arizona produced a strong final round to win this Regional despite giving up home course advantage to their nearest rivals North Carolina State. Albeit they needed a scoring anomaly by N.C. State, which lead to them needing to include Caitlin Whitehead’s 78 card in their total, to do so.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

CLICK HERE FOR THE GOLFSTAT RESULTSTEAM and INDIVIDUAL

TEAM QUALIFIERS: T1 Pepperdine (24) +9, T1 SMU (18) +9, T3 Oklahoma State (22) +16, T3 Texas A&M (5) +16, 5th New Mexico (44) +25

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – None
Non-Qualified – T37 ANNA FOSTER (IRL / AUBURN) +11, T48 ALEX GILES (ENG / INCARNATE WORD) +19, DNF ANNABEL WILSON (IRL / UCLA)*

Alongside Palm Beach San Antonio proved to be the toughest venue for the players and teams this week. Auburn were the highest ranked team (7th) not to progress from the six Regional events.

*Annabel Wilson was dropped for UCLA’s final round and replaced by Emilie Paltrinieri.

WESTFIELD, INDIANA

CLICK HERE FOR THE GOLFSTAT RESULTSTEAM and INDIVIDUAL

TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1st Mississippi State (7) -19, 2nd Oregon State (53) -17, 3rd Vanderbilt (19) -16, 4th Virginia (21) -15, 5th Tulsa (34) -9

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIER: 6th Isabella McCauley (Minnesota) -7

GB&I PLAYERS:
Qualified – None
Non-Qualified – 62nd CARMEN GRIFFITHS (SCO) +14

Oregon, ranked 8th by the NCAA, finished 10th out of the 12 teams at Westfield and arguably the most disappointing post-season performance this week.

3rd May 2023

The six 54 hole NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 8th-10th May 2023.

72 teams and 36 individuals, from non-qualifying teams, were selected on 26th April 2023 to compete at these competitions.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in April with 27 Conference team champions granted automatic qualification into the 2023 Regionals. The remaining teams progressed based on their performances throughout the season.

12 teams and 6 individuals were allocated to each of the six Regional venues with a strength-of-field metric factored in to ensure maximum balance and fairness across all of them.

Teams of five players play 72 holes of stroke play with their best four scores counting towards their team’s total score. Players, who play in each round, are also eligible for a separate Individual competition.

5 teams and the top individual (not on one of those teams) from each Regional event will progress to the National Championship which will be played at Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Arizona on 19th-24th May 2023.

I will be updating this article with the results when play gets underway.

National Championships

The Division I Competition Oversight Committee announced in January 2023 that the field for this year’s Division I Women’s Golf National Championships would be increased from 147 to 156. The number of teams is being increased from 27 to 30 with the number of individual participants falling from 12 to 6.

______________________________________________

The six Regional Championships are shown below with each team listed in seed order with their Golfweek / Sagarin national ranking in brackets and, if they earned automatic qualification, the Conference Championship they recently won to do so.

GB&I players attached to the qualifying colleges are highlighted in bold blue type, with their selection number (#1-6). Each team is now allowed to take a Reserve to the event so it is possible some may not play or be subbed in and out during the week. I am expecting 20 or 21 GB&I players to participate at this year’s Regional Championships.

5th May 2022

The six 54-hole NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships will be played on 16th-18th May.

The NCAA Committee select the participating teams and leading individuals, from non-qualifying teams, largely based on the GolfStat U.S. College 2021/22 Men’s Division I Rankings which can be viewed here – TEAM and INDIVIDUAL.

Local Conference Championships were played across the country in late April with thirty Conference champions granted automatic qualification into the 2022 Regionals.

The teams and individuals are seeded and spread across the Regional sites to ensure each field is broadly of equal standing.

Three of the sites will have 13 teams and 10 individuals competing, while three will have 14 teams and five individuals. There will therefore be 81 5-man teams and 45 individuals playing in total.

The low five teams (30 in total) and the low individual (6 in total) not on those teams from each Regional will advance to the National Championships.

The 2022 National Team and Individual titles will be decided on 27th May – 1st June at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Arizona State University and The Thunderbirds are hosting this year’s Championship on behalf of the NCAA.

______________________________________________

Each qualifying team is listed below in seed order so it is clear who the favourites are to progress from each Regional.

After the College or University name you will also find the Team’s Golfweek / Sagarin national ranking and if they earned automatic qualification the Conference Championship they won to do so.

46 GB&I players are attached to the qualifying colleges and are highlighted in bold blue type below.

However, only 27 of these individuals have been selected for their college’s initial five-man team. If they have not been picked a bold red N/S (‘Not Selected’) has been added after their name.

Each team is now allowed to take a Reserve to the event so it is possible some may be subbed in for later rounds.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee announced the teams and individuals they had selected to participate in the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships on 1st May.

Only teams with an overall winning record (greater than 50%) against other Division I colleges in the season were considered for selection. Leading Individuals from non-qualifying teams were also added to the overall field.

All of the teams were seeded and spread across the six Regional events to ensure each field is of equal standing.

Each Team is listed above in seed order. Therefore the earlier teams at each site could be considered to be the main favourites to win the Regional and ultimately to contest the National Championship in a few week’s time. After the College or University name you will also find the Team’s Golfweek / Sagarin national ranking and if they earned automatic qualification the Conference Championship they won to do so.

The NCAA selections were largely based on the GolfStat U.S. College 2018/19 Men’s Division I Rankings which can be viewed here – Team and Individual

Looking at the Individual GolfStat Rankings on 1st May 2019 there were 11 Great British and Irish players in the Top 200. These are Sandy SCOTT (13), Oliver FARRELL (32), Harry HALL (81), Alex FITZPATRICK (91), John MURPHY (104), Jamie STEWART (108), Daniel O’LOUGHLIN (126), Brad BAWDEN (162), Angus FLANAGAN (176), Jamie LI (185) and John GOUGH (200).

Defending champions Oklahoma State remain the outstanding team in U.S. college golf and will again enter the post season as the team to beat.

The 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships were held at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The hosting team OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY won the team title, defeating Alabama, 5-0-0 in the match play final.

Broc EVERETT of Augusta University won the individual title. He beat Brandon Mancheno of Auburn on the first play-off hole after both players had recorded a 281 (-7) total score during the 72 hole stroke play qualifying.

NCAA Division I Men’s Regionals – 2018 GB&I Results

30th May 2018

As there was only limited GB&I interest in the National Championships I couldn’t justify a separate article. However, I thought I would add some comments on this event to my Regional Championships article. The original Regionals article follows immediately beneath these.

No. 1 seed Oklahoma State won the NCAA Championship for the 11th time beating Alabama 5-0 in the match-play final which fortunately for them was being staged on their home course, Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

In the stroke-play stage of the event Broc Everett from Augusta University defeated Auburn’s Brandon Mancheno in a playoff to win the individual national championship. Playing as an individual after his team missed the 54-hole cut, the 23-year-old claimed his first college victory at just the right time.

It proved to be a disappointing event for the handful of GB&I representatives who made it this far.

Sandy Scott (SCO) was our only player to play all four rounds in the stroke play stage. He shot rounds of 77, 73, 76 and 85 (+23) to finish T79 in the individual standings. Just one of his four rounds counted to his team’s total as Texas Tech qualified in 3rd place. Texas Tech then lost 3-2 in Round 1 of the match play to eventual runners-up Alabama. Sandy lost his match 2&1 to Davis Shore.

Daniel Sutton (ENG) shot rounds of 71, 73 and 75 (+3) but his Kansas team missed the 54 hole stroke play cut.

Ryan Lumsden (SCO) started well with a 67 but fell away with subsequent rounds of 76 and 80 (+7). As I feared in my NCAA Regional Results article Ryan’s teammate Eric McIntosh (SCO) was dropped for the Finals. However, he was subbed in for the 3rd round where he shot a creditable even par 72. Nevertheless Northwestern fell just short of the first cut mark.

Harry Ellis (ENG) recorded scores of 75, 73 and 80 as UNLV crashed out on Day 3 too.

16th May 2018

Over the last three days 81 teams and 45 individuals not on those teams have competed in six 54 hole NCAA Division I Regional Championship events.

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each Regional have now advanced to the National Finals, which will be played on 25th – 30th May at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

For more background information on these events please read my previous article – NCAA Division I Men’s Regionals – 2018 Preview.

This follow up article summarises the results of the 21 Great British and Irish (GB&I) players who competed in the 2018 Regional Championships.

The links for both the Team and Individual Player Results are provided in RED under each Regional heading for those seeking more detail.

Well done to Ryan Lumsden and Eric McIntosh (both Northwestern), Harry Hall (UNLV), Sandy Scott (Texas Tech) and Daniel Sutton (Kansas) who have all played this week and have seen their Teams qualify for the National Championships.

Hosted by Texas A&M University, College Station

GOLFSTAT SCORES – TEAM and PLAYER

From the 13 teams competing here Texas A&M Univesity (1), Clemson (3), Baylor (2), UCLA (5) and Kentucky (4) qualified. This was the only Regional where all of the top 5 seeds progressed.

2017 U.S. Walker Cup player Braden Thornberry (Ole Miss) finished 4th to claim the Individual qualifying spot.

San Francsico finished last on +40. I am not sure why Toby Briggs (ENG / FR) was not selected this week as he seems to have played for them throughout the College season.

Our only other representative in Texas was Lewis George (ENG / JR), the Central Arkansas man playing as an Individual. After a solid 73 in round 1 Lewis fell away with rounds of 77 and 75. He finished tied 50th out of a field of 75.

OSU Golf Club, Scarlet Course – Columbus, Ohio
Hosted by The Ohio State University

GOLFSTAT SCORES – TEAM and PLAYER

From the 13 teams competing here Oklahoma State (1), Illinois (2), UNLV (4), Northwestern (6) and Texas Tech (3) qualified.

Kyle Mueller from Michigan, playing as an Individual, justified his selection by winning the event and qualifying as the low individual.

Ryan Lumsden (SCO / JR) recorded rounds of 75, 70 and 66 to finish tied 4th. Eric McIntosh (SCO / FR) finished tied 46th after rounds of 72, 78 and 77. Ryan and Eric were both in the Northwestern team who qualified for the Nationals. Eric, who was 5th in the line up, had one counting round and therefore may find his place under scrutiny next week.

Harry Hall (ENG / JR) shot rounds of 70, 70 and 75 to finish tied 13th. His team UNLV finished 3rd so he can look forward to playing in the National Championship.

Sandy Scott (SCO / SO) finished well with a 70 after earlier scores of 81 and 75. With two counting rounds and Texas Tech claiming the final qualifying team spot Sandy can also look forward to contesting the season finale.

Paul McBride (IRE / SR) finished tied 20th alongside two of his Wake Forest teammates. Paul shot three counting rounds of 76, 70 and 73 but will see his time in the U.S. come to an end without playing in the National finals, Wake Forest finishing a disappointing 8th.

Louisville finished 9th where they were seeded for the event and therefore failed to qualify. Devin Morley (IRE / SO) 75, 77 and 76 finished 51st whilst John Murphy (IRE / SO) 79, 78 and 73 was tied 57th in the individual rankings. Hugh O’Hare (IRE / FR) failed to make Louisville’s starting 5 for the Regionals.

Rhys Nevin-Wharton (ENG / SO) delivered a 76, 73 and 75 for Tennessee to finish tied 37th. Whilst all three of his rounds counted his team were well off the pace this week.

Elliott Fullalove (ENG / SR) was not selected by Jacksonville who went on to finish tied 10th. Their No. 5 player Aaeri Krishnan shot rounds of 82, 86 and 80 (+35) and finished last of those players completing all 54 holes.

Yale finished 12th out of the 13 competing teams with Eoin Leonard (IRE / JR) not finding the Ohio State University course to his liking (79,79, 80 / 67th).

Reunion Resort, Watson Course – Kissimmee, Florida
Hosted by University of Central Florida

GOLFSTAT SCORES – TEAM and PLAYER

From the 14 teams competing here Florida (2), UCF (10), Vanderbilt (1), North Carolina (3) and Kent State (5) qualified.

George Cunningham from Arizona qualified as the low individual.

Pavan Sagoo (ENG / SR) recorded rounds of 73, 72 and 71 (216) to finish tied 39th. His St. Mary’s CA (9) team finished 11th.

Jack Ainscough (ENG / FR) shot rounds of 76, 68 and 72 (216) to also finish tied 39th. His team, Colorado State (8), finished 7th.

Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club – Norman, Oklahoma
Hosted by University of Oklahoma

GOLFSTAT SCORES – TEAM and PLAYER

From the 14 teams competing here Oklahoma (1), Brigham Young (7), North Florida (5), Auborn (2) and Arkansas (3) qualified.

Joshua McCarthy from Pepperdine qualified as the low individual.

Florida State came into this Regional as the 4th seeds and finished 6th just one shot behind Arkansas. Jamie Li (ENG / SO) recovered from a first round 75 with rounds of 72 and 70 to end up tied 26th. Similarly Harry Ellis (ENG / RS SR) started poorly with a 79 before posting a 71 and 73. Nevertheless I am sure both he and the team would have been hoping for more than a tied 47th finish from their No. 1 player.

Jack Hermeston (ENG / SR) struggled at the Jimmie Austin OU G.C. this week. His rounds of 86, 76 and 76 and a tied 72nd finish didn’t really help his University of Missouri-Kansas City team, although two of them were counting.

Lonnie Poole Golf Course – Raleigh, North Carolina
Hosted by North Carolina State University

GOLFSTAT SCORES – TEAM and PLAYER

From the 14 teams competing here Texas (3), Duke (5), North Carolina State (6), Augusta (12) and Arizona State (4) qualified.

Campbell’s Pontus Nyholm won a three way -9 play-off to qualify as the low individual.

Harrison Taee (ENG / SO) was not selected by Duke who finished 2nd as a Team on -22.

Missouri pair Rory Franssen (SCO / SO) and Jamie Stewart (SCO / FR) both played consistently well finishing on -1 to tie 32nd. Rory shot rounds of 71, 72 and 69 whilst Jamie contributed a 68,72 and 72. Missouri finished tied 8th, missing out on 5th place by just 6 shots.

Oisin Devereux (IRE / SO) recorded rounds of 75, 77 and 76 to finish 70th as his Iona team found themselves out of their depth at this level.

Charlotte’s Conor Purcell (IRE / SO), playing as an Individual, couldn’t build on his 67 in round 2. His other rounds of 79 and 74 saw him finish on +7 and tied 61st, 16 shots away from the play-off and required qualifying mark.

In passing I should note this event was won by SPWAR World No. 1 Doug Ghim. Doug shot 64, 66 and 66 for a stunning 196 (-17) total and a 3-shot victory.

The Reserve at Spanos Park – Stockton, California
Hosted by University of the Pacific

GOLFSTAT SCORES – TEAM and PLAYER

From the 13 teams competing here Kansas (8), Stanford (3), Iowa State (10), Alabama (2) and Oregon (5) qualified.

Charles Corner from Texas El Paso secured the Individual qualifying spot by finishing tied 3rd on -9.

Kansas were the surprise winners of the Stockton / Pacific Regional. Daniel Sutton (ENG / SR) went along way to delivering this shock. His opening round of 67 was followed up with a 73 and 71 which secured him a tied 9th result in the individual standings, the second best in the Kansas line up..

Thomas Mulligan (IRE / FR) was not selected for the successful Oregon team this week but will have his fingers crossed the coach has a change of heart before the Nationals.

Likewise Danny Daniels (ENG / FR) of Iowa State was not selected but his Team progressed.

Colorado just missed out finishing 6th. However, Daniel O’Loughlin (ENG / SO) continues to impress. Rounds of 73, 69 and 71 saw him finish a creditable tied 16th.

This event was won by 2017 USA Walker Cup player Norman Xiong with rounds of 68, 67 and 66 (-15).
