Brabazon Trophy – 2024 Preview & Results

26th May 2024

Gregor GRAHAM (SCO) continued his excellent form in 2024 by collecting the prestigious Brabazon Trophy at Hollinwell G.C.

The Blairgowrie man joins Ronnie Shade (1961, ’63, ’67), Sandy Lyle (1975, ’77), Gordon Brand Jr (1978) and Lloyd Saltman (2005) as Scottish winners of the Brabazon.

Talking to England Golf afterwards Graham said “It feels absolutely amazing. It’s great to win such a big event like this. When I knew it was going to be 12 holes on the final day, it felt a bit different and strange but it was a bit of a shootout so I just tried to make as many birdies as possible.”

Round 3

With a high probability of thunder and lightening during the day England Golf took the early decision to cancel Round 4 and to play Round 3 over 12 holes. The reduction to 12 holes being made due to the Rules of Golf not permitting the number of holes in a round to be reduced once it has commenced.

Holes 1-8, 15, 16, 17 and 18 at Hollinwell (with a par of 50) were used to ensure that a speedy course evacuation could take place if required.

Gregor GRAHAM (SCO), who started the day 4-shots back and in tied 4th, came through the field to lift the famous gold trophy with a 3-under 47.

Daniel HAYES (ENG) finished 2nd on -8. Like the winner, who had finished in the group ahead of him, he bogeyed the 460 yard closing hole to miss out on a possible play-off.

Wilhelm RYDING (SWE) was 3rd on -8. His 49 (-1) included an eagle on the 17th but the birdie he then needed on 18 alluded him.

The biggest move of the day came from Wilmer EDERO (SWE) who posted a 45 (-5), which included four closing birdies, to finish 4th on -7.

Eliot BAKER (ENG) finished strongly with a 47 to claim 5th place also on -7.

Overnight leader Harry TAKIS (AUS) had a day to forget shooting a 59 (+9) and tumbling down to a 28th place finish. Playing partner Harley SMITH (ENG) didn’t fair much better; his 53 (+3) on the final day seeing him fall to 9th place.

There was some consolation for runner-up Daniel HAYES (ENG) in that he won The George Henriques Salver, awarded to the leading GB&I player in the Championship under the age of 20.

Round 2

Harry TAKIS (AUS) backed up yesterday’s 65 with a 69 today to maintain his position at the head of affairs. After going out in a 1-over 37 he birdied four of his last six holes including the two closing ones.

Harley SMITH (ENG) shot a 68, which included eagles on the 3rd and 17th holes, to move into solo 2nd place on -9.

Wilhelm RYDING (SWE) followed his opening 68 with a 69 to move up into 3rd on -7.

Daniel HAYES (ENG) and Gregor GRAHAM (SCO) will head into the final day tied 4th on -4.

Matt ROBERTS (WAL), now tied 8th, bounced back superbly from an opening round 75 with a joint best of the week 65 which included an eagle and six birdies.

Also noteworthy was Gregor TAIT‘s (SCO) bogey free 66 to make the cut. No mean achievement after he started the day on +5 and just the kind of round selectors like to see.

Round 1

It may have been 24 hours later than originally scheduled but Round 1 didn’t disappoint with a number of players going low at Hollinwell.

18 year old Harry TAKIS (AUS), ranked 606th in the WAGR, took the early lead with a bogey free 65 (-7).

Gregor GRAHAM (SCO) also shot seven birdies on Day 1 but a bogey on the short par 4 11th meant he had to settle for 2nd place on -6.

Olly ALLISON (ENG), a Midland qualifier, Daniel BENNETT (RSA), Harley SMITH (ENG) and Monty HOLCOMBE (ENG) are all tied 3rd after signing for 67’s.

At the end of the day 38 players were under par and a further 10 finished on even par.

16th May 2024 (Updated 23rd May 2024)

The 78th English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the Brabazon Trophy will be played at Hollinwell, the home of Notts Golf Club, between Friday 24th and Sunday 26th May 2024.

I will be updating this article with daily reports once play commences.

Format

The competition traditionally consists of 72 holes of stroke play golf with 18 holes being played over four days. A 36 hole cut reduces the field to the leading 60 competitors and ties for the final two rounds.

However, due to heavy rain on Wednesday 22nd May, which forced the official practice day to be abandoned, the format this year has been changed. The practice round will now be played on Thursday 23rd, Round 1 on Friday 24th and Round 2 on Saturday 25th. A revised cut, taking in only the leading 36 players and ties, will then be made before the final two rounds are played on Sunday 26th.

In the event of a tie for the Championship there will be a sudden death play off.

All other places will be determined by a card count-back, starting with the final round and working backwards from there.

Tee Times

Play on the opening two days will commence at 7.00am with the final three-ball heading out at 3.30pm.

Click here to view the – 2024 Brabazon Trophy Tee Times

Field

144 competitors from 16 different countries will contest the 2024 Brabazon Trophy Championship.

The majority of this number were exempt with starting places offered to a number of national golf federations and to those players who have performed well in other recent Championships.

Amongst the 87 exempt players and most highly ranked players are James ASHFIELD (WAL / WAGR #48), Daniel BENNETT (RSA / #262), Tomi BOWEN (WAL / #205), James CLARIDGE (ENG / #199), Nicola GERHARDSEN (SUI / #236), Gregor GRAHAM (SCO / #228), Conor GOUGH (ENG / #319), Matthew MCCLEAN (IRL / #76), defending champion Liam NOLAN (IRL / #109), Benjamin REUTER (NED / #169) and Altin VAN DER MERWE (RSA / #148).

Will HOPKINS (ENG / #101) was a late withdrawal with a minor shoulder injury.

The Championship clashes with the NCAA Division I National Championship in California which means a number of leading GB&I and European players are otherwise engaged with their U.S. colleges.

Just eight of England’s top 20 WAGR-ranked players are competing in their country’s leading amateur event.

Prize vouchers will be awarded to those players finishing in the top five.

Two other prizes are connected to the Brabazon Trophy competition: –

The George Henriques Salver is awarded to the leading GB&I player in the Championship under the age of 20.

The Philip Scrutton Jug is awarded to the player returning the best aggregate scores in The Brabazon Trophy and The Berkshire Trophy. The latter was played on 18-19 May and won by Freddie Turnell (ENG), who failed to qualify from the Southern Qualifier at Marlborough (he finished tied 29th).

Hollinwell

Hollinwell, the home of the Notts Golf Club, was formed in 1887 and moved to it’s current site in Kirkby in Ashfield in 1901 inviting twice Open champion Willie Park Jnr to lay out an original 18 hole course.

Tom Williamson and JH Taylor developed the course further in the early 20th Century.

The course is in an outstanding location, mixing heathland, moorland and woodland features. The 11th-13th holes played on the higher ground are particularly memorable. The holy well, which gives the course its name, is located near the 8th tee.

The blue championship course plays to 7,250 yards and a par of 72. It has a Course Rating of 76.2 and Slope of 145.

Hollinwell has hosted numerous amateur and professional Championships over the years and between 2018-2022 was a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship.

This will be a record sixth time that it has hosted the Brabazon Trophy. Past winners here include Doug Sewell (1959), Sandy Lyle (1975), Charlie Banks (1983), Ignacio Garrido (1992) and Cormac Sharvin (2015).

Weather Forecast – on Wednesday 22nd May 2024

History, Past Winners and Records

The English Amateur International Trophy competition was first played in 1947.

In 1957 the official title was changed to the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

The current trophy was donated by Lord Brabazon of Tara in 1948 and the event has come to be widely known as the Brabazon Trophy.

The first player to successfully defend the title was Ronnie WHITE who won at Birkdale in 1950 and nearby Formby in 1951.

Shortly afterwards Philip SCRUTTON won the Brabazon three times in four years (1952, ‘54 & ‘55).

Sir Michael BONALLACK has four wins to his name. The first came at Royal Cinque Ports in 1964 and the last at Hillside in 1971. At Moortown in 1969, with play-offs having been discarded at this time, he shared the title with Rodney FOSTER.

Other well known British winners of the Brabazon include Gordon BRAND Jnr, Sandy LYLE (2), Peter MCEVOY, Ronan RAFFERTY and Ronnie SHADE (3).

Other notable winners include well known pros Ignacio GARRIDO (1992), Peter HANSON (1998) and Charl SCHWARTZEL (2002).

AFTERWORD – THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

17th July 2022

Italy’s Filippo CELLI won the low amateur Silver Medal at St. Andrews. His scores of 74, 67, 71 and 71 for a 283 total (-5) was good enough for a tied 47th finish.

Celli who is from Rome and a rising junior at Texas Christian University said “I’m feeling very happy and proud. I can’t ask for a better thing than to win the Silver Medal at the 150th Open in St. Andrews.”

Six amateurs, namely Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG), Barclay BROWN (ENG), Filippo CELLI (ITA), Aaron JARVIS (CAY), Keita NAKAJIMA (JAP) and Aldrich POTGIETER (RSA), qualified for The 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews.

Barclay BROWN (ENG) -6 Tied 12th, Filippo CELLI (ITA) -3 Tied 36th, Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) Ev Tied 66th and Aaron JARVIS (CAY) Ev Tied 66th all made the Top 70 and Ties cut which fell at Even par. In total 83 players in the field progressed.

This continues the ‘over-achievement’ trend seen at Opens played on the Old Course. Five amateurs made the cut in the 2015 Open staged at St. Andrews. However, just four made the cut in the five Opens played subsequent to this year’s return to Fife.

They will now play the final 36 holes over the weekend with the lowest scorer amongst them earning the Silver Medal prize.

The other two amateurs, Keita NAKAJIMA (JAP) +3 Tied 107th and Aldrich POTGIETER (RSA) +6 Tied 134th, both missed the cut.

28th June 2022

This article focusses on Regional and Final Qualifying and in particular the performances of the AMATEUR golfers seeking to earn a spot in The 150th Open Championship.

Introduction

156 players will contest this year’s Open Championship which will be played on the Old Course at St. Andrews between 14-17 July 2022.

The majority of the field is made up of exempt players; former major champions, winners of prestigious professional events, leading players in the OWGR and a handful of amateurs.

The following four amateurs have earned exemptions into The Open through their prior Championship victories: –
The Amateur Champion 2022 – Aldrich POTGIETER (RSA)
The European Amateur Champion 2022 – Filippo CELLI (ITA)
The Mark H. McCormack Medal (WAGR) winner 2021 – Keita NAKAJIMA (JAP)
The Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion 2021 – Keita NAKAJIMA (JAP)
The Latin America Amateur Champion 2022 – Aaron JARVIS (CAY)

The U.S. Amateur Champion 2021 James PIOT (USA) turned Pro ahead of joining the LIV Golf Series thus foregoing his exemption.

The other players in the field have had to qualify. 34 places were allotted to The Open Qualifying Series. The leading 2-4 players, not already exempt, in the top 8-12 at 16 professional tour events played in 2022 secured these. A further 16 spaces, increased from the normal 12, have been given over to Regional and Final Qualifying. Regional Qualifying was played on Monday 20th June and Final Qualifying on Tuesday 28th June.

FINAL QUALIFYING

Final Qualifying took place over 36 holes at four venues across Great Britain on 28th June 2022.

There were 288 players competing including 72 amateurs.

16 places in The Open, 4 from each event, were guaranteed by The R&A. Any ties for the last qualifying place in each event was decided by a sudden-death play-off.

Two amateurs Barclay BROWN (ENG) and Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) were successful at Final Qualifying and will now play in The Open Championship at St. Andrews.

Here are the amateur results from the four venues: –

THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

156 players will contest The 149th Open Championship at Royal St. George’s G.C. on 15-18 July 2021.

The following eight amateurs will be competing at this year’s Open: –

Exemptions
The Amateur Champions for 2020 and 2021 – Joe LONG (ENG) and Laird SHEPHERD (ENG)
The European Amateur Champions for 2020 and 2021 – Matthias SCHMID (GER) and Christoffer BRING (DEN)
The Mark McCormack Medal (WAGR) winners for 2019 and 2020 – Cole HAMMER (USA)
The Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion 2019 – Yuxin LIN (CHN)
The Latin America Amateur Champion 2020 – Abel GALLEGOS (ARG)

The U.S. Amateur Champions for 2019 and 2020, Andy OGLETREE (USA) and Tyler STRAFACI (USA), have both turned Pro thus foregoing their exemptions. 2020 McCormack Medal winner Takumi KANAYI (JAP) also turned Pro in September 2020 thus missing out on a visit to Kent.

Final Qualifying
Sam BAIRSTOW (ENG) was the only amateur to come through the Qualifying process.

Sam was exempted into Final Qualifying as one of the leading 10 WAGR ranked players as at Week 2021/21, not otherwise exempt. He then finished tied 2nd at St. Anne’s Old Links after rounds of 63 and 69 (-13) to secure one of the three places on offer at each venue.

QUALIFYING

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic The R&A introduced a revised Qualifying format.

Most amateur golfers entered the competition at Regional Qualifying, although some were exempted in to Final Qualifying and a lucky handful the Championship itself.

This article follows all of the AMATEUR GOLFERS through The Open Championship 2021 Qualifying events. Information on the Final Qualifying events is at the top of the page with reports on the earlier Regional Qualifying competitions below that.

FINAL QUALIFYING

The same four venues used for Regional Qualifying were used for Final Qualifying which took place on Tuesday 29th June with 36 holes of stroke play golf played by each competitor.

282 players, made up of Regional qualifiers and other exempt players, contested the four competitions. There were 79 amateurs competing; 62 came through Regional Qualifying with the other 17 being exempted into this stage.

All of the Regional qualifiers had the advantage of staying at the same course they played last weekend.

12 players, 3 from each event, were guaranteed places in The Open Championship through Final Qualifying.

1st July 2019

Final Qualifying for the 2019 Open Championship will take place on Tuesday 2nd July at four courses across Great Britain.

The qualifying venues are Fairmont St. Andrews, Notts G.C. (Hollinwell), Prince’s G.C. and St. Annes Old Links.

There are 12 places available, 3 at each Qualifier.

There are currently three amateurs in the 2019 Open Championship field. These are: –
The Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion 2018 – Takumi KANAYA (JAP);
The Amateur Champion for 2019 – James SUGRUE (IRE); and
The European Amateur Championship 2019 – Matthias SCHMID (GER).

Viktor HOVLAND (NOR), the 2018 U.S. Amateur Champion, and Braden THORNBERRY (USA), winner of the 2018 Mark H. McCormack Medal (Men’s World Amateur Golf Ranking No. 1 in August 2018) have both turned pro and therefore foregone their exemptions.

Regional Qualifying

150 players initially progressed from the 13 Regional Qualifying events staged on Monday 24th June with 50 amateurs amongst them.

Withdrawals from Final Qualifying have subsequently seen more players brought forward from the Regional Qualifying Reserves List. As at 5.00pm on Monday 1st July 11 amateur reserves have been called up. Rob BRAZILL (IRE), who was Reserve 31, being the latest one.

For more information on this year’s first stage please read my earlier report – ‘The Open Championship – 2019 Regional Qualifying’.

Final Qualifying

36 holes of stroke play golf will be played by each competitor in Final Qualifying.

288 players, including 78 amateurs, have been allocated across the four venues.

Looking at these amateurs 50 qualified from the Regional Stage, 11 were Reserves from these events and 17 have benefited from exemptions directly into Final Qualifying.

The three leading players at each of theses events will advance to the 148th Open Championship to be played at Royal Portrush Golf Club on 18th – 21st July.

Any ties for the last qualifying place in each competition will be resolved by a hole by hole play-off at the end of play.

As always 156 players will contest The Open itself, with the majority of these already being exempted into the field.

All tee times at Hollinwell will be off the 1st whilst the other three venues will be utilising their 1st and 10th tees.

Amateur Players / Tee Times

Here is a list of the amateur entries at each of the Final Qualifying events with links to The R&A’s Golfbox tee times and scoring links: –

2018 Final Qualifying

Scotland’s Sam LOCKE was the only amateur to progress from Final Qualifying in 2018. He recorded rounds of 69 and 66 to claim medalist honours on 135 (-7) at The Renaissance event. Sam had been exempted into the Final Qualifying stage as the 2017 Scottish Closed Amateur champion.

He went on to win the low amateur silver medal at the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links and immediately turned professional thereafter.

The Open Championship – 2018 Final Qualifying

3rd July 2018

Scotland’s Sam LOCKE saved the day for GB&I amateur golf at Final Qualifying today. Rounds of 69 and 66 helped the Stonehaven man to medalist honours on 135 (-7) at The Renaissance and a place in The 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links.

With only 3 qualifying places available from each site it was always going to be a big ask for any amateur to come through. It’s therefore a great achievement for Sam who had been exempted into Final Qualifying as the reigning Scottish Closed Amateur champion. He was also rewarded by a 105 place jump in the SPWAR to 140th.

Other notable amateur performances came from David HAGUE ENG (T6), Alex FITZPATRICK ENG (T6) and Jake BURNAGE ENG (T9) at Hollinwell, Ryan LUMSDEN SCO (T4) at Prince’s, Joshua MCMAHON ENG (T8) and Ben HUTCHINSON ENG (T8) at St. Annes Old Links and Eugenio LOPEZ-CHACARRA ESP (T5) at The Renaissance. All ‘came close but no cigar’.

There were 72 amateurs amongst the 288 players contesting today’s four 36 hole Final Qualifying events. 59 of them came through Regional Qualifying whilst 13 were granted exemptions.

Links to the final results are provided below, along with a list of all of the qualifiers from each site and every amateur performance.

30th June 2018 (Updated 1st July 2018)

Final Qualifying for the 2018 Open Championship will take place on Tuesday 3rd July at four courses across Great Britain.

The qualifying venues are Notts G.C. (Hollinwell), Prince’s G.C., St. Annes Old Links and The Renaissance Club.

There are currently three amateurs in The Open Championship field. These are: –
The Amateur Champion for 2018 – Jovan REBULA (RSA);
The Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion 2017 – Lin YUXIN (CHI); and
The European Amateur Championship 2018 – Nicolai HOJGAARD (DEN).

Doc REDMAN (USA), the 2017 U.S. Amateur Champion, and Joaquin NIEMANN (CHL), winner of the 2017 Mark H. McCormack Medal (Men’s World Amateur Golf Ranking No. 1 in August 2017) have both turned pro and therefore foregone their exemptions.

Final Qualifying represents the last roll of the dice for the Great British and Irish amateur fraternity. There are 72 amateurs competing out of a total field of 288 players, with 65 of them coming from GB&I. 13 amateurs were exempt straight into Final Qualifying. With 12 places available hopefully one of them can come through for me.

Regional Qualifying

143 players initially progressed from the 13 Regional Qualifying events on Monday 25th June with 40 amateurs amongst them.

Following withdrawals from Final Qualifying around 55 Reserves have now also been brought forward from the Regionals. Within this number are another 19 amateurs.

For more information on this first stage please read my earlier report – ‘The Open Championship – 2018 Regional Qualifying’.

Final Qualifying

36 holes of stroke play golf will be played by each competitor in Final Qualifying.

287 players, including 66 amateurs, have been allocated evenly to the four venues.

The three leading players at each of theses events will advance to the Open Championship to be played at Carnoustie Golf Links on 15th – 22nd July.

Any ties for the last qualifying places in each competition will be resolved by a hole by hole play-off at the end of play.

As always 156 players will contest The Open itself, with the majority of these already being exempted into the field.
